Nice. Now that has potential. Good sci-fi flicks are few and far between.

So wait...is this a part of the Alien franchise? That ship looked too much like the derilect ship they found on LV-426. Regardless, that looks pretty awesome.

It is. It's a standalone prequel to Alien.

Ridley Scott is really good at this sort of movie. I really need to be terrified out of my mind for another hour and forty-five minutes.

(Note, this is Ridley Scott. Pacing will be more important than storyline -- atmosphere is everything to him. The movie will likely be short.)

Wow, I had no idea they were related. Well that makes all the familiar alien imagery much more awesome then, I just thought Ridley had run out of ideas. :)

Hooray for Alien getting back to it's horror roots!

Aliens? Check.

Ridley Scott? Check.

Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, & Idris Elba (Heimdall from Thor)? Check.

Holy ****, I am SO going to see this movie. I read a teaser article about it months ago, and they were very quiet and coy about the connection to Alien. They would not say if was related or not. All the article said was "Maybe, but maybe not." After seeing the trailer, I can definitely see the familiar alien imagery. According to wikipedia, its not exactly a direct prequel, though.

wikipedia wrote:
On 31 July 2009, news surfaced of a two part prequel to Alien, developed by 20th Century Fox.[25] with Scott attached to direct.[26]. The project, ultimately reduced to a single film called Prometheus, which Scott describes as sharing "strands of Alien's DNA" while not being a direct prequel, is scheduled for release in June 2012.

Either way, it looks totally awesome, and I will be waiting very anxiously to see this one in theaters.

You know what? **** work. It can live without me for a couple of hours in the morning.

Midnight showing of Prometheus, here we come!

On the sad side, however, Guillermo del Toro has said that it's likely Prometheus put the final nail in the coffin of his At the Mountains of Madness adaptation, though. :(

Guillermo del Toro wrote:
PROMETHEUS started filming a while ago- right at the time we were in preproduction on PACIFIC RIM. The title itself gave me pause- knowing that ALIEN was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella.

This time, decades later with the budget and place Ridley Scott occupied, I assumed the Greek metaphor alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -if not the demise- of ATMOM.

The sad part is- I have been pursuing ATMOM for over a decade now- and, well, after HELLBOY II two projects I dearly loved were not brought to fruition for me.

The good part is: One project did… And I am loving it and grateful for the blessings I have received.

Guillermo del Toro wrote:
“Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical. Both movies seem to share identical set pieces and the exact same BIG REVELATION (twist) at the end. I won’t spoil it[...]”

Had I my druthers, I'd prefer that both were made. If I had to choose though, I'd rather have seen del Toro's film come to life.

Well I'm guessing FarSky will eventually give his very detailed and articulate review of the movie, but I just got back from it and I'll give my always very brief review.

It's certainly possible that there was some profound subtle plot there that I just 'didn't get', but I doubt it. I hope I'm proven wrong.

I was just deeply disappointed with this movie. As much as I was looking forward to it, which was a lot, that's just how much I was disappointed with it. The effects were great, the visuals were great, but the story was muddled and unfocused, as were some of the performances and dialogue as well, and by the end it really just devolved into a cheap monster movie. There were a few times when characters tossed out the quote "that's what I choose to believe", in I guess some weak attempt to seem spiritual or egalitarian, but it all fell flat to me. The film asserts a few disparate and interesting ideas, barely so, but eventually just leads them all into either cliched action/horror movie dead ends or some vapid philosophical surface skimming. Oh and by the way, despite the denial by some, this movie is absolutely a prequel to the Alien films.

Completely disagree Slythe but to each their own.

I thought it was great. Very well done in my opinion.

I want to write up a proper review, but we're painting tomorrow. In short, I loved it unreservedly.

I thought this was a good write up and summed up my muddled thoughts well.

Yeah, Kenneth Turan of the LA Times said much the same thing. Sorry, can't find a print version of his review, just a video.

Saw it again tonight in LIeMAX (thought it was going to be real IMAX, grrr). Still love the **** out of it. Been busting *** on Far Sky Studios' first event vid project, so I haven't had the time to sit down and properly write a review, sadly. But I love it unreservedly and unabashedly.

By the way, I don't agree 100% with his interpretations, but here's a fascinating take on the meaning and themes of the film. Long but well worth the read (also, it should go without saying, but MAJOR SPOILERS AS IN THE WHOLE MOVIE IS SPOILED BECAUSE IT'S A DISCUSSION NOT A REVIEW):

http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/584135.html

For what it's worth, it's not the first place I saw it, but Prometheus writer Damon Lindelof himself tweeted a link to that blog post, saying "@Cavalorn, I love the way you think." Read into that what you will.

By the by, here's an excellent interpretation of the Alien films' Ripley-as-Demeter. I love these films so bloody much (yes, even Resurrection, and to a lesser extent, Alien3). They've got so damn much meat on their bones. Fascinating to break down.
