There's a very specific nautical term I knew well when I was growing up on Cape Cod (ie: around a nearly endless supply of sailboats and sailboat owners) for using a low-power motor to maneuver one's boat in the harbor or marina. It's roughly equivalent to taxiing an aircraft. I tried to use this word in conversation the other day and drew a blank. Anyone know the word? I've been Googling for hours and apparently am having a bad day because the closest I've come is "trolling", which term I knew before I started looking and isn't quite the one I want.

Not really a nautical term (I don't think) but "Putter/Puttering" is to meander about aimlessly...

Sorry, that's all I got :p

The only ones that come to mind are cruising/maneuvering. I don't think either quite fits.

Seconded. This is what I always thought is the term for what you are describing.

In what context were you attempting to use this term?

Trawling is a fishing term, it means dragging a fishing net behind you. I doubt that is the word he is looking for. But I have no clue as to the correct term.

Ok Shel you're driving me nuts. I know a few nautical terms, but I can't think of anything. I did find a page on maneuvering under power, which gives details on the process but no specific terms were associated. Arrrr!

Edit: another linky http://www.sailnet.com/forums/learning-sail-articles/18874-maneuvering-under-power.html

Tacking is a method sail-powered vessels use to move against the wind.

Yeah, but it was the only other term mentioned when maneuvering your boat around another vessel...
I tend to get stuff like this stuck in my head and I won't be able to sleep until I know what it is.

Hell if I know. The context was almost immediately swallowed up by the fact that none of us present could come up with the word. We sat around going "OH! Damnit! I know the word, but I can't think of it" for a while, then talked about something else.

That was my guess as well... (see 2nd post in the thread). He didn't say anything, so I'm guessing that's not it.

Yeah, sorry about that. Wasn't sure how serious a suggestion that was so I sort of treated it as rhetorical/joking.
I haven't yet managed to come up with whatever word was rattling around in the back of my head, and have pretty much given it up at this point.
