actually yes it is. Heavier than say, gold I would assume?

Uh, dunno. We didn't want gold rings, so Phe's are silver (engagement ring) and white gold (wedding bands). I never even tried a gold band. I'd assume so...my ring has a fair amount of heft to it, but it's durable as hell, doesn't show scuffs, etc. After wearing it for a while you wouldn't notice the weight, but the other, more desirable traits remain.

I like Tungesten, I think that's what I'm going to go with on my wedding band. Heavier, stronger and (IMO) better looking than gold.

The tungsten rings are awfully nice. I never heard of them until after we got married, unfortunately, but my wife probably would have insisted on traditional gold anyhow.

my Fiance's engagement ring was a custom job, is white gold--- to match it, I think her wedding band will also need to be custom made and white gold.

We kinda wanted matching rings, but we both really liked the tungsten look. (some of the black tungsten I think would look great next to it but... I have the following concerns)

a) I'm half-remembering issues with putting different metals side by side (issues with one essentially electroplating the other)
b) not sure how tungsten & gold would look side by side with white gold. the differing wear rates long term could be an issue as well.
c) her ring will have to be custom made to match--not sure the jeweler can work with tungsten given the massive differences in hardness & melting point.


I think we'll go with tungsten for me, and have to have the jeweler go with white gold again for her wedding band.

Many manufacturers of tungsten carbide wedding band rings use cobalt as a binder, mostly because it is cheaper to produce. The problem with cobalt is that it bonds with oils in the skin and leeches out of the ring resulting in oxidation. The oxidation appears similar to tarnished silver, but cannot be removed by polishing or grinding. The better choice is nickel-binder tungsten carbide which is chemically inert, will not oxidize and because it is hypoallergenic, there is no danger of irritation to the skin. Be careful about dealing with a jeweler that doesn't specify that their tungsten wedding bands are made with the nickel binder alloy. Many jewelry stores do not know which alloy they are selling, and if they don't know, it is most likely cobalt alloy or pure tungsten, which lacks the hardness of tungsten carbide and are easily scratched.

Because of tungsten carbide's extreme hardness, wedding bands made from this metal cannot be sized like gold, silver or platinum rings. When you are ready to purchase, make sure that you take extra care in determining the proper size. In regards to engraving a tungsten carbide ring, it is possible, but the results will be very faint and difficult to read unless laser equipment is used.

The folks that I know have them like them. I personally always wanted traditional gold. Mostly for the idea that gold can only be formed from a supernova, which means that I am wearing a piece of a dead star.

Pretty much any element heavier than iron was formed by a supernova.

Fusion produces a net yield of energy all the way up to Iron & cobalt. After that it's a net loss and thus not a self-sustaining process. Elements up to iron are formed by normal fusion processes in stars.

Predicted conditions in the Big Bang do not support the creation of heavy elements (nucleosynthisis is predicted to have lasted only 3-20 minutes, far too short a time for heavy elements to form). However Supernovae do create heavy elements. The only other ways you can create a heavy element are to have some other element decay into it (the original element still had to be formed by supernova) or the insignificant quantities created by fusion in particle accelerators.
