Starting next week, I'll be a full-time student. I'll be phasing out my involvement with my current employer fairly quickly. Starting with the 1st of next month, I'll be dropped from my employer's health plan (UHC via the American Civil Engineering Council). So I need to jump onto my own private plan, but I have no idea where to go with this.

One possibility is USAA. I am a USAA member, and currently use them for auto insurance. In that arena, at least, their customer service is very highly regarded. But they aren't the benefits provider for their health insurance. That gets outsourced to Assurant Health, about whom I really don't know anything. Does anyone have any experience with Assurant? Or better yet, Assurant via USAA?

DCCCD also publishes a list of student health insurance vendors, but I'm not sure what their criteria are. They only say that their office of Risk Management has checked their ratings. From what I can tell, these are basically just brokers. The policies are underwritten by various and sundry companies: CIGNA, Aetna, AIP, etc. There are about a dozen vendors on the list, and it doesn't appear that any of them make benefit summaries, quotes, or even just basic plan outlines available online.

Don't worry about it. If Assurant doesn't meet the USAA requirements they'll kick them to the curb so damn fast that their heads will be spinning.

(We work with some of USAA's farmed out policyholders for other insurance and we had to set up a separate unit just to service these spill-overs at USAA's request)

I use USAA for almost all of my banking and insurance. However, I don't use them for Health Insurance as I have that through UHC via my Employer with TriCare as a secondary.

I would suggest that the fact that USAA is re-selling Assurants' services as a pretty ringing endorsement. USAA has pretty high standards for stuff like this.

Will it be group or individual?
