There are documented cases of crows using tools for as long as I can remember ...

The birds are smart; in fact, one of the more amazing and overlooked examples involves crows in areas where Darwin was exploring in the 19th Century. Crows use sticks, rocks, and other objects to gain access to larval nests in trees and other vegetation as a method of survival. Crows can also mimic human vocalization, though not as well as some other birds ...

However, Crows also tend to display more understanding of human speech than most other animals in that regard.

Actually, crows and ravens are thought by some to actually enjoy flying on a windy day. When they get in a group, they'll play with each other by climbing into the wind, dive-bombing each other, jumping off buildings with wings tucked, that kind of thing. Most people don't notice such behavior, or if they do, don't think of it as playing in the mammalian sense. Ya know, we see a puppy or a kitten do that, they're playing. Crows? Nah, they're just flying.

Oh I am sure birds have fun. I wouldn't have believed had I not seen it with my own eyes:

In my early teens my family owned a cat that was declawed. It was an indoor cat, but spent most of its time outdoors.

One summer day our sliding back-door was open with the screen door closed. I was lying on the couch watching tv when I heard a massive amount of chirping coming from the back yard.

I got to the door, and here is what I saw. Our cat was sitting between the fence and a tree (the two things were about 12 feet apart). About four or five birds were chriping, dive bombing and "buzzing the tower" to the cat, and then landing. So they would go from tree to fence, and then fence to tree. With each passing, they would dive bomb and buzz the cat.

The cat didn't move from her spot. She just sat there and swatted away at the birds as they came. It really looked like the birds were just having a good time mocking the cat.

The birds didn't have a nest nearby. The cat was not a threat. And it really looked like the birds knew this and were just having fun tormenting the cat with no claws. And the cat, didn't seem to mind it either.

This went on for at least 15 minutes until the cat got bored.


And on a side note, I swear that there are thrill-seeking birds who dive bomb in front of oncoming cars and avoid a near-collision just for the adrenaline rush.
