So, the city I'm in has little lines on the road designating spaces for parallel parking. The way I understand it, these lines are meant to provide a guide for where to park so that there aren't a bunch of large gaps between cars that are too small to fit another car. They should help fit more cars in a given row.

However, the genius traffic engineers in my city decided to make them long enough to fit a full sized pickup truck. Thus, instead of maximizing efficiency, they simply guarantee inefficiencies as there is at least a half car length between every car, reducing the number of parking spaces considerably. Why?

What if someone's driving a full size truck? Are they supposed to take two spots if they're too small?

Yes. Make "normal" car size spaces with the caveat that any truck would be allowed to take up two of them. Closer parking when necessary while still remaining accessible to trucks.

Until the "normal" cars start parking in every other space, making it impossible for drivers of larger vehicles to park on the streets that they also pay taxes for.

There is no need for creating spaces at all.

I think the parking would be interesting that way and might make a real cool looking picture from satelites

Not really. You'd just see more cars circling the block looking for spaces.

Horse ****.

People are perfectly capable of parking themselves without setting up lines like we're living in a damn coloring book. Find a place where your **** car fits, park it there, and STFU.

Just curious.

Unfortunately not everyone has your wisdom or consideration for the needs of others. I worked in parking for four years. Trust me on this one. Leave people to their own devices they'll pull up over the curb and practically in your door.

This has nothing to do with lines on the street, or anything else I am talking about.

It has to do with allowing or encouraging the government to take a bigger chunk out of our lives by encouraging us to color/park/live within the unnecessarily mandated lines rather than think for ourselves. Rynar, change, go to bed and trail at stupidity tomorrow.

Interesting, because a whole lot of traffic studies say your wrong. So yes, you'd end up with less effective spaces (actually, this depends somewhat on the type of road and type of people parking).

No, you don't wind up with less efficient parking than when you create extra-long spaces to accomodate large truckss.

Yeah, that would work out great. People are perfectly capable of parking themselves; they aren't generally capable of taking into account anyone else. There's an unsightly profusion of inconsiderate assholes out there, and in bigger areas, even people who do think of others won't necessarily consider things like "a fire truck can't get around this corner if I park here."

Again, I'm not talking about parking on curbs or in fire zones. I'm talking about individual, pre-sized parking spaces within the already designated parking areas.

The principle applies to issues of spacing as well. My experience shows this as well.

Forgive me for discounting your vaguely accounted "parking experience".

That's not what you asked for.

However I did work at a Hospital entrance 40 hours a week for four years, watching people with their comings and goings and parking their cars. Many times the lines on the lots were snowed over.

One such time I observed an entire row of cars parked in ( three rows of cars without spacing so the middle one had no way of escape). We also had limited short term parallel parking on the drives with no space markers. I've seen people try to part sideways and everything in between there as well. So pardon me if I'm a little skeptical that everyone can fend for themselves in this area.

I hate to even think what this would end up looking like, or why you even think this is a problem, other than some vague allusion to "coloring books". Rori's experiences match some of the things I've seen as well. There's a reason why at large events that use grass parking areas, they have attendents to direct people in - because even in predesignated parking areas, some people (and by "some people" I mean a good quarter of them, minimum) simply cannot think beyond their own immediate satisfaction. There's also the fact that in "predesignated parking areas" ambulances and fire trucks still need to get in and out.
