Another thing awesome about Steam: I never go back and decide to play an old game, and then find that the CD/floppy is scratched/corrupt and it can't be installed again. I just click install, and play. :)

I'm not seeing the logic in that article.

So a used multiplayer game causes server costs that the developer does not see any recompense for...

Except a used game requires that it first be sold new. The developer gets recompense for the game at that time. Then, when the original purchaser returns the game, that person is no longer consuming server resources. The developer's costs to run the multiplayer servers for a used copy ends up being the same as if the original purchaser had kept the game and continued to play.

If I plan to support a million copies of a game, and I sell a million copies, it's my own fault if I can not support them. If Farsky then sells his copy of the game to Raltar, I am still supporting the million I planned for. I am minus one Farsky and plus one Raltar. 1,000,000 - 1 + 1 = 1,000,000. This is basic arithmetic.

If the argument is that the original purchaser makes a pirated copy of the game and then trades the original back to a used game store, then the problem is piracy and not the used game.

If the argument is that the used game store itself constitutes "copyright infringement" by reselling games, take that up with them in court.

The real idea here is nothing more than wanting a slice of the used game pie, and since they're not getting it, they want to stamp it out. The thing is, when Farsky sells his game to Raltar (either directly or through some other dealer), Farsky is getting back some of the money he originally spent on the game.

Do you have the same issues with used car dealers, purchasing a house that isn't new construction, thrift shops, flea markets, antique shops ect?

Resale value is part of the initial sale price.

See, that's what I've never understood.

You can't have used without new. Used creates demand for new. People are more willing to go out and buy new if there's a used market they can return the product to once they no longer want it.

So why the beef with the used market? The only answer is that the publishers want a piece of the pie. That's their fault for not thinking of it first.

I actually do not care either way. I own two used games that go into my rotation of games played... DA: Origins and Mass Effect 1.

If I like a game enough to play it, I will buy it new for the selfish reason of getting to peel off the stickers myself.

Also, I have no qualms with the used industry, I get it for homes, cars and even games... my boy plays a game for 3 to 4 days and then is done with it. I am not forking out 60 bucks a game for that ****.

You know what? You're absolutely correct.

And yet it doesn't matter. If they can realize more profit this way (taking into account people who get pissed off and don't buy their games any more, and taking into account any costs involved in operating the "pay for used content" system) so what? They're a business. It's their job to make money.

Funny thing...just a thought...Steam lets you transfer a used game to somebody else. Which means you could sell it. And yet Gamestop's business model is not liked. (Nevermind that the store sucks.) There's a double standard...

That's true, too. However, they're not guaranteed to make money, and I hope (and this is not confined to the video game sector) that their bottom line suffers every time they attempt to add restrictions on the consumer. Ultimately, that comes down to relying on the enlightened self-interest of people as a whole, which you'd think would be a fair bet, except that "enlightened" part rears its ugly head. Still, I hope.

What a stretch. You could sell your friend a game for $2, but Gamestop will buy a game from you for $15 and turn around to sell it for $50. They make most of their profit from used game sales and it shows by their dwindling shelf space for new games.

Wow...now that I think about it. The only thing I have trouble finding in GS is controlers and things like that. Last three games I got from there, they took off the shelf, had not been opened and they didn't try to push used **** on me.

I'm starting to like my Game Stop.

You jest, but this is actually what happens.

My local Game Stop bought up the local game shop and kept its employees about 6 months. The store out in the Styx was beating the pants off the mall store a county over, because it was doing business as it had when it was still privately and locally owned. So, they closed the profitable store.

Wait, so they closed it because it was doing well? Or do you mean they closed it because one of the two needed to go and the one in the mall seemed like a safer bet in terms of profitability? Either way, ouch. I recommend a Syndicate-style hostile takeover of Game Stop.

Why, when I can buy from best buy or the internet? I can get used games from ebay too. Also I could just get everything from gamefly and never buy ****.

Accessories being in stock has always been my problem, no issues with finding new games.
