Let's follow the OP's request people:

Asked for 9mm specifically. Not .357, not .40, but 9mm.
Asked for <900, so NOT HK.

My Springfield XD9 was bought new for under $500 in Ohio, came with case, two mags, and holster. I've put at least 1000 rounds through it and the only jam was a port jam when a friend of mine limp-wristed it.

^ Who the eff is that guy? :D

Re: Springfield. I have talked to someone who used one extensively and his biggest gripe is that all the replacement parts, mags, accessories, etc are only available through Springfield. Which he says charges an arm and a leg. Is that your experience too?

Well, despite Elmo's pre-emptive and eventual protestations otherwise ...

A Hi-Point C9 isn't a bad option. They're not pretty, and they aren't expensive; they are, however, fairly heavy. They are reliable and simple, which makes them easy to maintain for the extremely casual shooter. And you can find them just about anywhere ...

Maybe it's just me, but every time I see this thread title, I read it as "Advice Pistol", and I picture some bizarre twist on the advice animals meme.

OT: nothing to do with his choice of guns

I've already got a large .357, but my next purchase I really want one of these....

On top: I still say go handle the different types and makes. See how they fit in your hand, and shoot if possible. Most popular brands these days are going to be reliable. Don't discard other brands not mentioned here, like Ruger and Taurus. If you can find a good deal, and the gun feels right, buy it. Don't get caught up too much in namebrand appeal. Some will swear by a certain brand, but it may not be the gun for you.

Seriously I have no wisdom or opinion on the subject, I couldn't resist the urge to use that quote.

I've shot one, and it really doesn't do anything for me. the .410 shotshells it can use aren't really a stopper.

Plus since I'd carry for personal defense, I'd refrain from having anything like "The Judge" or anything else emblazoned on my weapon since that will be the first thing paraded out on the civil case following any shooting, no matter if justified or not.

Kinda sad that I'd be more inclined to shoot an intruder with a side by side coach shotgun rather than my M-4 because it would look better to a jury...

Ahhh, Hopwin's tactic worked! This whole thread was a trap intended to get you to show up. Hopwin set you up the bomb.

Obviously, the proper weapon for Drop-Bear hunting is the Snowball Gun:

It's a pretend animal, like the Jackalope.

Someone at work mentioned a Ruger P95 as a solid, but dirt cheap pistol. Anyone have any experience?

If you want a solid, but dirt cheap pistol, buy a Hi-Point C-9. Again, they aren't pretty, but they're simple.
