nice ;-p Are Panasonic no longer respected? They used to be top notch, especially with the Pioneer Plasma knowhow they bought in during the first credit crunch.

I just bought a 47" LED LG set... Damn you for making me look at the TV market again, 'skee.

8M contrast, 2D->3D, local dimming, internet apps, yadda yadda yadda for $999.

I am also an LG convert. I initially bought a smaller (40") one for a secondary room, and ended up watching it more than our primary (old school rear-projection). We ended up buying a 55" LG LCD a year later to replace the rear projection. Very pretty TV's.

How do you like it?

We bought a Sony 55" XBR, xbr55hx929 specifically, and I love this thing. Need another set for the living room and that size and price sounds good.

There's a little issue with some uneven lighting (not the aforementioned vignetting, mind, but some 'hotter' spots on the screen when it's in a very, very, very dark scene, but it's hardly worth a mention. I don't know if it's a minor problem with the panel or if it's just a by-product of the fact that it's a freaking 70" screen.

I came here to leave impressions on the new TV, but... I'm gonna need to wait for the blood to make its way back to my brain.

The only downside that I have seen on this TV so far is that it's got some mouse input lag when connected to my laptop. That's fine, though, because I don't even really have a reason to connect my computer anymore, since this detects network comps and can stream. I think I've read that the input lag has something to do with the local dimming settings, so I may have to play around with it some more to see if I can eliminate or minimize it.

My last 3D TV was active shutter DLP, because I didn't really care for passive 3D tech when I got it. I've had a change of heart, though, this LG passive 3D is pretty great. There's definitely something to be said for the comfort of the glasses, not having to worry about batteries, zero eye strain, etc. Also, the brightness when using 3D is fantastic. When you're sitting up close (I'm talking like, within two feet) you can see scan lines while wearing the glasses, but at a normal distance they're impossible to see.

Love the magic remote that LG bundles with their sets. It's like having a Wii remote work with your TV. The remote itself only has like 6 buttons, but you can still accomplish everything the normal remote does because on-screen options show up only when using the magic remote. It's like having a transparent hotkey bar in an MMO, fades in/out as you hover over the area (top for channel info, bottom for options like 3D, aspect, sound, etc).

I appreciate the fact that the TV was actually bundled with a usb wifi dongle instead of having to pay for it, but I went ahead and plugged in the ethernet anyway.

Tonight I'm probably gonna browse AVSF for some calibration settings and then maybe I'll put on some blu-rays for more in depth looks at the black levels, etc. So far all I've really done is play with apps (youtube 3D is sweet), some TV and video games.

I have to say, on every modern TV I've gotten, I've immediately turned off all of the 'automatic' tech that comes with it (auto-dimming, auto-contrast, smoothing, etc.), and the image is all the better for it.

Oh, local dimming shouldn't be confused with backlight dimming. It's something you definitely want turned on for the best PQ, but unfortunately involves a little input lag. I do also turn off dynamic contrast and smoothing, though.
