Yeah, so we have the other EQ FTP discussion, but EQMac is completely free to play, no restrictions, starting now.

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts ... _id=180593

This post explains how to download the new, intel-based client. Apparently, the download flags your account for it automatically.

Hobart has also been made a much more active Dev, and there are rumors Smed is giving him some minions as well.

I've already remade Lenas in his original form and will probably be dicking around on Al`Kabor some. Look me up if you play!

I've got to see how it will play on my Air, but I'll probably be giving it a try.

No Mac desktop to play on, although this is definitely pushing me towards doing something about getting one.

Free, permanently old-school EQ!

It runs *fantastic* on my Macbook Pro. The fan doesn't even turn on, lol.

The only thing I wish EQM had from EQPC right now is the recent interface customization options. Those would be fantastic. No way it'll happen, though.

I'm assuming it will run pretty well, since I know what computer I was using to play EQ back when PoP was current... And my MBA should blow that out of the water.

I've got the 2010 iteration as well, which had the better video card of the two.

Damn. Patcher needs Flash, which I'm steadfastly not installing on this laptop. No real need and it eats battery life.

Will have to wait until I've got an actual Mac desktop somewhere.

Neph, installing Flash isn't going to just arbitrarily eat your CPU or anything. It's only going to be running while the launcher is active, and Flash is only "processor intense" on things like mobile phones. There is ZERO downside to installing it on your Air, honestly. It's not some power-hungry beast that's always going to be active.

*most* of what I do on this is web browsing and desktop publishing. It's amazing how much flash content is on websites, and similarly it's amazing how much battery life said processes eat. I'm managing about 8 hours out of the battery now with really light using, and 6-ish with average use, which is great.

My wife's, with similar use and Flash installed, gets about 2-3 hours less on average. It's quite a significant change. If you read around, you'll see that's pretty much in line with what other people report as well.

It's not about the use with EQ, I know it would only be in use for a few minutes- it's for how having flash would impact the rest of my usage. It's not as bad as on mobile phones, but flash does have pretty significant effects on the ultra-low voltage systems as well.

Couldn't you disable the flash plugin in your browser of choice thus allowing you to browse in peace.

Install Flash in a specific browser and then only use said browser to launch EQ? Or, flash blocking extension for your browser of choice?

Hmm, I like the idea about installing it in a specific browser.

Just for citation, here's ArsTechnica's report on the Air and Flash:

Quote:
We did find (quite by accident) that Apple may have more reasons behind not installing Flash by default other than the stated reason of ensuring that users always have the most up-to-date version. Having Flash installed can cut battery runtime considerably—as much as 33 percent in our testing. With a handful of websites loaded in Safari, Flash-based ads kept the CPU running far more than seemed necessary, and the best time I recorded with Flash installed was just 4 hours. After deleting Flash, however, the MacBook Air ran for 6:02—with the exact same set of websites reloaded in Safari, and with static ads replacing the CPU-sucking Flash versions.

I'll read around and see what I can come up with. I use Safari for most of my browsing, I could try to install flash in Firefox, and then use Firefox for launching EQ.

Hmm, some quick googling suggests that there's no straightforward way to do this in OSX, as Chrome, Firefox and Safari all use system wide Flash installs rather than plugins.

Adblock helps, but there are quite a few things that seem to get around it. Clicktoflash is also an option, but somehow doesn't seem to give the same benefits to battery life, seems to partially load and then block the flash bit.

If anyone knows of an easy way to very selectively use Flash on OSX, I'm open. Otherwise, I'll just wait until I get a mac desktop for home, and then I won't have to worry about it.

Adobe offers a standalone Flash player but there's a problem because you need to actually load the website to get the variables for the launcher to know you want EQ.

Looking into it...

Like I said, I'll be replacing my desktop soonish, and can always just run it then. Been off of EQ for almost 6 mos anyhow, a few more wont kill me.

Apple has their 21.5 iMacs down to 929 returned, and they're quite nice machines. Was looking at Picking one up post taxes this year.

Utdaan started me off with almost a full set of gear, a Swiftblade of Zek and a Sceptre of Destruction :) Lenas is already level 11 and I'll be dual wielding those bad boys soon!

Sweet. That reminds me a lot of what my ranger twink was wearing back in the day.

Can you do it the other way? Enable in Chrome, disable in safari? That's what I had read wasn't possible, and I use safari as my main browser.

I'll try downloading Chrome and see sometime this week.

So tagging back in here, on a slightly different question: what Mac are you using to play? I may be able to sink around on my Air, but a gaming laptop it is not.

I'm sure any of the 2011 iMacs would run it fine. But what about one of the low end Mac minis with a ram upgrade? The processor is more than enough, it's the HD3000 graphics card that worries me.

I'm playing on a MBP with 8gb of ram and a Radeon 6750m.

And I'm assuming it plays quite smoothly?

Oh yes, very. Runs at 60 fps all the time, which I think it's capped at.

Edit - I also think that I should mention that running Youtube videos will make my video card fan kick in, but EQ has yet to do so.

Hobart just restarted the server and fixed the new account flag issue.

Lenas just hit 22, and I think I'm gonna start a shaman box.

'ClickToFlash' will do it for Safari. Thats what I used before I switched to Chrome as main browser.
