I am not making this up.. and we're all gonna die!

I should note however, that both this study and practically every movie ignore the possibility of zombie cannibalism which would change the results drastically.

They also tend to ignore how quickly dead bodies would be destroyed due to weather and things like falls and such. Zombie's wouldn't survive long anywhere it freezes at night or anywhere it is hot enough during the day.

A zombie apocalypse basically requires you to ignore these things though to make them scary.

That, and the humans usually use appallingly bad tactics. That part isn't so unrealistic in the initial stages, but doesn't make a lot of sense once the nature of the threat becomes apparent.

The nature of the zombies themselves makes a difference; different fictional sources have markedly different zombies, but there's no real reason to argue for or against any particular zombie model since, well, there are no real ones... so far!

I was never terribly bothered by the lack of zombie cannibalism. I'm willing to believe they all want fresh meat and their fellow undead simply aren't appetizing.
The infected in 28 Days Later, on the other hand ...

I suppose that's as logical an explanation as any other. It probably would bother me less if it weren't so universal. Then again, like human ineptitude, it's probably necessary to make the story last long enough for a decent movie.

Cold wouldn't be much of an issue. It would just slow them down. They are annimated corpses. The real cold might just put them to sleep if you think about it. Once they start to thaw...the hunger goes on. Granted, you have to accept that they don't need to eat, they just feel compelled to do it. Heat and rot on the other hand. It wouldn't take too much time for the maggots to do their work. Dead smelly flesh will bring the bugs and nature will do it's thing.

Then you only have to worry about bugs being able to transmit the virus to humans. If that happens...yea. Doesn't matter.

It's possible that, if the zombie is no longer endothermic, that cold could freeze them solid. They'd also be more susceptible to tissue damage from cold if that were the case; frostbite would set in a lot more easily.

Frostbite kills tissue, by definition zombie flesh is already dead. If I put a steak in the fridge and thaw it out in 6 months it is still more or less edible, not so much if I left in the sun for a week. The question I have is do zombies eventually become animated skeletons? This has never been addressed adequately in the literature or films.

Actually we don't know that zombie flesh is, by definition "dead". It's still capable of certain signs of life, mainly mobility.

By definition, the only thing we know it is, is "undead" and that is whatever we want it to be in any given book, movie, or game.

Hence the term: "living dead"?

Exactly. Since that, in real life is a contradiction in terms as far as we know, we can't necessarily assume that the properties are one way or the other; only that there is some unknown mix. In the case of certain types of zombies, like the ones in the "28.." series or "I am legend" they don't seem to be living dead at all but rather simply victims of a virus, but then, we can't assume that those depictions would be accurate.

Of course, we could talk about one specific depiction, but even there information is generally incomplete.

28 days and I am Legend were not zombie films. Both established that they were dealing with living people mutated from exposure to a virus. Zombie movies however are the dead returned to life imho.

zombie noun
1. (in voodoo)
a. the body of a dead person given the semblance of life, but mute and will-less, by a supernatural force, usually for some evil purpose.
b. the supernatural force itself.
2. Informal .
a. a person whose behavior or responses are wooden, listless, or seemingly rote; automaton.
b. an eccentric or peculiar person.
3. a snake god worshiped in West Indian and Brazilian religious practices of African origin.
4. a tall drink made typically with several kinds of rum, citrus juice, and often apricot liqueur.
5. Canadian Slang . an army conscript assigned to home defense during World War II.

That depends on who you talk to. Many people do consider them zombie films; there's really not a lot of difference between them and a "living dead" zombie. The same applies to "Resident Evil"; they're technically created by a virus.

Resident Evil monsters were created by the T-virus that reanimates the dead and mutates the living. The Rage virus from 28 days and the .... something virus from I am Legend do not kill their hosts, only mutate the living. Same with Quarantine which has some sort of hyper-rabies virus that drives the living insane.

Get the Zombie Survival Guide by Mel Brooks' son, Max Brooks. Great read.

When it comes to firearms, it actually gives high marks to .22 caliber guns. Ammo is small and light (and cheap, if you are preparing in advance), so more can be stockpiled and/or taken on the run. And a .22 bullet can easily penetrate a skull and brain, which is really all you need.
