I occasionally like to tease my oldest about having to give enemas once she's a nurse, but in reality, how common is it for them to be administered for medical reasons?

Very common, at least in ER. Not as common on the floor. Old people come in constantly with abdominal pain...usually they are taking narc's for whatever reason and narc's are very prone to causing constipation. So, we do a CT scan, find out they are constipated and give the enema and poof! Abdominal pain is resolved.

You actually get used to doing them, they sound worse than they are.

Never take pain meds without adding lots of extra fluids and fiber to your diet.
