Spoiler:
Ok I am disappointed, for two reasons.

1. The Prothean sounds like an African. I'm fine with aliens and certain accents, but this one I just can't get around. His accent just snaps my brain back into reality.

2. He doesn't look anything like this. Image

That guy is not going anywhere near any of my away missions.

Spoiler:
I've read that the statues on Ilos were of the race that were there during the cycle prior to the protheans. They were mentioned on one of the planet's descriptions in ME2, but I don't recall which planet. Then again, this is from the leaked script that is said to be an early draft of the script that many things have been changed from.

As for the accent, doesn't bother me at all.

Spoiler:
Meh, I am glad some people won't mind the accent. Some accents just don't work for aliens. For me, it'd be like using a cockney, Irish, New Jersey, or Mexican accent. It doesn't help that I had an African room mate in college and he was an annoying son of a *****.

Vigil didn't sound like an African when it learned English.

As for the statues, I never read anything like that. But, this could be Bioware pulling a Metzen and rewriting game history to fit with some new idea they have.

On top of that, I liked the idea that the Protheans were completely eradicated (or fully genetically altered into Collectors) and never to return. The Reapers don't seem like they'd be that incompetent to allow that species to somehow return. It makes the story of the Protheans less awesome and tragic, and it makes the Reapers look far less bad-ass. But who knows? Maybe one of the Reapers is the Urkel Reaper.

He might not even be a real Prothean. He might be a collector shell that Mordin somehow transfered archived memories into. Who knows, guys. I wouldn't be too disappointed in Bioware's writers yet. They've given us a series of gold so far.

Nm, wiki put a stop to that line of thinking... But even so, re-reading the entire page left me feeling like it wasn't something that hard to believe.

Spoiler:
It's kind of really **** hard to find 1 stasis pod keeping that 1 prothean alive. Especially since the Reapers never found Ilos at all. It's not so unbelievable to me. Basically, the protheans made everything possible. They reversed engineered the conduit, they sabotaged the Citadel so the Keepers wouldn't respond to Sovereign's signal to gain control when it was time to act. They are awesome and it's a damn shame that there is only one left. So no, it's not hard for me to believe at all. It doesn't diminish the Reapers or make the Protheans any less than they were before.

Also, there's supposed to be another live action trailer that is supposed to be shown during the Walking Dead tonight. Also, launch trailer has been confirmed for sometime this week. Let's hope it is as good as the ME2 launch trailer.

EDIT:

Oh wait, it's out early.

EDIT2:

Replaced link with higher quality video.

anyone else vaguely irked by the fact that they're pushing you the pre-order DLC before the game is even released?

A) If its finished content it should have gone in the game
B) I'm not buying DLC until i Know i like the game

Take a seat before you read the next line.

$870/£550/€650. Whaaaat.

It must, however, be pointed out that much of that horror-price stems from having to buy bonus code-sporting hardware such as special gamepads, keyboards and headsets, or Mass Effect 3 merch such as multiple action figures and iPhone cases.

And most of what it gets you in-game is just weapon variations, skins and multiplayer unlocks, rather than ‘real’ content. Not stuff you’ll actually need, in other words, depending on how much you care about being King Big Balls in multiplayer. Apparently, each additional code you get for the Collector’s Assault Rifle (available with assorted Razer hardware) further boosts its power in multiplayer, which makes for a fairly vague concept of completism and presumably suffers from diminishing returns.

Even so – this is a sign of just how darkly convoluted and fragmented modern gaming purchases have become. The full breakdown of all the DLC and the necessary purchases is over yonder.

Yeah. I'm not sorry to not be supporting these moves.

You mean like every other large title? Not really. Day one DLC is becoming pretty common and this is why it's okay:

But if it's available on Day 1, it's immaterial when they started production on that content. It's finished in time to be part of the final game.

I mean, they're welcome to do it, I suppose -- but it's just going to make it all the more likely I'll just say "You know what? I'll wait a year for the Game of the Year or the Platinum version to come out with the Day 1 DLC *and* the first 3 post-release DLCs bundled together for the same price as the game launched at." This doesn't help the publisher look good to its shareholders with big release sales.

It's finished in time for the final game to be released, but the whole point of that chart is to show that the "final game" is done months before we see it at retail. You want the development team to be sitting idly by during that time? Not working on anything?

I'll take extra content, thanks.

I will, too. But 5 years ago, that extra content would have gotten rolled into the "final game" as the rest of the game was being tested. You'll notice that it's had its time to be testing, in there, too, and that the testing is before the game is released.

The only difference between the model 5 years ago and the model now is that publishers realized they could charge extra for that last bit of features/content they added, and claim it's DLC instead of a launch day patch or the final build before gold.

Developers aren't just allowed to cram extra content into the package a couple weeks before release, man, the publishers and MS/Sony don't allow that. What we're getting on our retail copies of ME3 (very likely) got approved and locked down months ago. The only things that make it to production past that point are bug fixes, generally.

Lenas is right. Besides, I got the Collector's Edition, so it's included in the price anyway.

Also, I wanted to point out this:

This is for multiplayer packs. You can get those in game for credits. The DLC stuff you get(aside from 1 multiplayer weapon which isn't even that good and it CAN'T be upgraded where every other weapon can be upgraded to level 10 with further unlocks) is just item packs that you buy from the store with in game credits. You'll get a head start and that's about it.

Multiplayer in ME3 is incredibly fun because I get to be a Krogan. And with ME3's lack of a permanent Krogan squad member, I need to get my rage out somehow.

Mass Effect as a series is responsible for everything wrong with video games today ...

Actually, there's no hyperbole here; more importantly, none of these comments should detract from whatever experience you derive from their games. That said, after playing The Old Republic, the original Mass Effect, and Dragon Age, I think Bioware's partnership with Electronic Arts has produced a similar sort of evil to the Activision-Blizzard monstrosity. More importantly, this evil is being fueled by a market model that works for a specific type of encapsulated experience game which is not an MMO or an RPG or any combination of the two. The Riot Model, which works quite well as a micro-transaction based fund source for League of Legends, has produced/emerged from a disturbing trend in Bioware's production model. In fact, it's rather evident in the language you're now repeating, Lenas.

Bioware has monetized development time in a new way. They don't actually ship new games. For instance, the assets for Burn the Sky are on the physical disk for my 360 pre-order copy of Mass Effect. All I actually downloaded from Bioware 90 days after release was an executable modified to access that content. Dragon Age was $30 over asking price if you wanted all the content physically on the disk, too. This is especially frustrating considering Shale is almost 60% of the entire Dwarf involvement, and the Warden's Keep is the primary source of Warden lore in the first game. Awakenings is slightly more problematic, because tons of its assets are already present in the Gold edition of the basic game; I'm not talking just art.

Now, mind you, I'm a big fan of paying for a good narrative: books and literature are my devoted avocation; however, I find the modularity of Bioware's emerging approach (which I blame almost entirely on EA)[and Activision-Blizzard's shift in a similar direction] to be a net negative for the kind of game experience that ultimately binds us together. Regardless of what most of think about a given game or a given engine or a given implementation of x, we're ultimately all here because we like interactive digital storytelling. The above change in economic model plus the mainstreaming of Bioware's creative core (they're writing books and movie scripts and not video games anymore) ...

Well, that's just everything wrong with video games today.
