I tried some space combat this morning. I did three different missions, though I had to do the first one twice because I failed it the first time. The first mission I did, I had to attack a space station. I failed the first time because I didn't pay attention to the objectives and wasted a bunch of missiles attacking the star destroyers, or whatever they're called. The second time I beat the mission but got banged up really badly.

I flew to the Republic fleet and went over to the starship upgrades vendor. Oh, shields and more missiles and stuff. That'd be useful. I bought all the upgrades, spending about 1000 credits, I think. Went back to my ship and picked a differenet mission.

This time I had to escort a shuttle. WTF is wrong with the shuttle pilot? Why are you flying right next to the star destroyers? Even Kira, who wouldn't shut up, made that particular comment. Overall, the mission was pretty easy; the shuttle got to about half life by the time it finally decided to land. I did waste a few missiles trying to attack what turned out to be the shuttle's destination. I don't think that can be destroyed, so whatever.

The last mission I did required me to fly around randomly until certain ships appeared. I had to destroy a named ship and 5 escort ships, which (I guess) appeared at predetermined times. The escort ships died to one missile each, and the named took, probably, 10 missiles or so. This mission was annoying. I had destroyed the named ship and 4/5 escort ships. I was just flying around with less than a minute remaining, wondering if I'd missed the last ship somewhere. The window for the ships appearing seemed unpredictable, though it's possible it's the same each time.

Flying on rails is annoying. Being unable to look around me is annoying. A lot of times I'd fly into the laser shots because I didn't know they were about to appear on the screen. Overall, it seemed rather clunky. I guess ultimately I don't have to do it if I don't like it. Are these fleet commendations used for anything other than starship stuff? If so, it's a closed loop and purely optional.

There's a full suit of orange-quality armor that can be purchased with fleet commendations, and a couple of lockboxes. Other than that, just ship upgrades.

I tried a mission that included using missiles. So they breed to lock on? How does one obtain a lock?

Put target in crosshairs, right-click. If it's an objective, you'll get a green circle around the target to indicate there's a missile heading towards it.

Also, if you hold down right-mouse button and sweep across the screen, you can lock onto multiple targets at once.

Yeah, I am not super impressed with space combat. It feels more like one of those video games in the arcade with the gun attached... like House of the Dead or something or maybe even Centipede. And hitting things truly is as simple as point and click.

Oh well. It's better than nothing.

For those enjoying the space game, I have Level 2 beam weapon upgrade thingies now. Level 19 to use 'em.

The purpose of space combat is to have something you can do solo while all of your companions are out whoring slicing for credits.

I like the space missions. It's a bit of light gaming and the XP for the first time completion and dailies is very nice.

Let's face it, it's much better than any of the "mini-games" that were included with KotOR1&2. My god, but I hated the space combat minigame that cropped up in KOTOR1 all the time where you manned a turrent and had to kill all the attacking fighters before you could jump to lightspeed.

The space one wasn't bad, once you got the pattern down, you could down all the attackers in about 45 seconds. Granted, I played through the first one about 15 times. The one I hated was the swoop races. That was just...stupid.

The swoop race is Shadows of the Empire was awesome though. As where most of the space combat stages.

I have a question. I have about 30 some odd commendations for Space Combat...where do you spend them?

On the fleet station. If you go to where the speeders are for sale, there is a commendation vendor right there.

I like the space combat. I wish it somehow tied into the stories better. But it is what it is.

I usually log in and run through the dailies while I'm eating breakfast in the morning.

Two to six minutes per mission. Nice way to start the day.

The Impossible Sector (sp) is **** making me nuts. Those damn mines mess me the hell up. I just can't kill them fast enough.

This.

I was able to defeat the mines and Mine Layer using strafing tactics (holding down the left mouse button and rolling across lines of mines).

The one that follows this kicks my ***. It involves shooting down a bunch of fighters (65 I think). I have tried numerous combinations of power conversion, switching back and forth between shields and blasters, and using my 10 second invulnerability at different times. I have never even come close to the objective, or for that matter, even finished the mission. I always die at the same spot, about 30 seconds from the end, during a flurry of attacks that I can see no feasible way to avoid or survive (using the mix of level 3 and level 5 ship gear at 41).

Hummm. What do you have that gives you this?

I really need to spend some time and money on stuff for my ship. Even though most of my stuff is level 5, I get tore the hell up at times.

I have all the level 5 purple items on my ship, plus the four fleet vendor items (proton torpedos, power-transfer thingie, EMP, and the jamming thing that makes you invulnerable). I still can't beat that one mission.

Here is a guide that explains combat at higher levels. IT covers all of the equipment and upgrades.

The second (last) Mission he shows is the one that I've been unable to beat.
