You say that like it's a big deal. We glow neon-bright because we aren't afraid laugh off piddly little Elmo and Barney peashooters whilst merrily laying down gauss rifle fire.

Butseriously, was that really an issue? I guess I never really noticed that - it always seemed to me like the empires were sort of equal in that respect, but weapons also had decent degradation over range anyway, so it didn't particularly matter unless people were snip-.... oh. Well, maybe they'll go with a deeper, less bright blue for fairness' sake, but that might be easily confused with Barney purple.

...Have I mentioned that I'm seriously considering buying/building a desktop computer for this game? My current system is somewhat... lacking...

I don't always PC game, but when I do, I use my laptop. Any tips/price ranges on something that would probably allow me to fully enjoy this game? I know they plan to make it run well on computers that are a couple years old, so I was thinking of getting either a new sort-of-gaming laptop or trying my hand at desktop-building.

I might even put a computer underneath said desktop and play games on it.

I've already built a new rig this past summer. I feel confident that it will chew up Forgelight and spit beauty out through my DVI port.

As for not noticing -- perhaps I'm a little more sensitive to it, since I ended up being one of the couple guys whose CR actually climbed high. Yellow vs. Black vs. Green. Which one stands out and says "Shoot me!"? ;)

As such, yeah, the blue is pretty saturated, but it's the saturated and BRIGHT yellow that has me going "great, we'll be loud targets again."

I'd desktop-build, rather than spend the cash on a gaming laptop. I find that the majority of the time I use my laptop, I'm on connections I wouldn't want to game on. Or home. Might as well not pay the premium for portability if you're not going to use the portability for that function.

GeForce 460's are pretty aggressively priced and quite decent cards. GeForce 560's and 570's are a little less aggressively priced, but a modest performance gain over the 460's.

Quad-core processors can be had pretty inexpensively; I'd probably recommend the i5 2500k for a budget performer. The i7 2600k beats it, but not by enough to be a better value.

RAM's dirt cheap these days. Trick yourself out with 8-12GB of DDR3 for <$100. I think my 16GB came in around $125.

Hrm. You know, I could probably arrange for some quality father time for this as well. He's been known to do these things, and I think he might enjoy tag teaming it over weekends. I work way too much for a full time student, so I'm raking in money that could probably see me affording to put together a new rig in a couple months. Thanks for the info. I need to separate my gaming and working computers anyway. :p

Right at about 2:15. Neeeeat.

I'm excited to see if those handle differently compared to normal aircraft. Also, I still oughta pick up a joystick and give a flight sim a try, 'cause by God I want to be good at interception! I can only competently pilot helicopters, not jets, in Battlefield 3 on the xbox, heh.

That sounds like traitorous talk, to me... I've got my eye on you.

My guess is that the Scythe will be the only aircraft capable of strafing (the lateral movement, not shooting lines in the ground) this time around. They've been talking about using a much more traditional and skill-centric flight model than the old "hovering camera" controls, so I suspect the other aircraft will be limited to requiring forward motion and only being able to provide thrust in the forward axis, so you have to point your nose to change direction. Allowing Vanu to break that mold satisfies the "maneuverability" design directive, then.

Also, I forgot to post this since I'm so annoyed at CS -- beta signups are up on the official site. It's telling me my password's wrong, and then telling me I can only do a password recovery once a day... and I haven't successfully done one in the first place. CS ought to be open today, so we'll see.

Funny. It refuses to let me change my email. I'm forced to use my ancient hotmail account that I never, ever use anymore.

And I will definitely miss the hovering cameras, since I'll probably be even more mediocre at flight now. I may even have to pick up a flight sim and a joystick for my new tower after I get some RAM and a new graphics card.

Just for you, Dal:

(edit to fix hotlink?)

No longer common pool. Ditto for the Bolt Driver -- both are NC-specific weapons, though VS and TR will get their own empire specific shotguns (err. maybe not shotguns, per se, but weapons with similar battlefield roles) and sniper rifles.

Also, good post from Higby in response to the announcement that the Bolt Driver is NC-specific:

Matt Higby wrote:
This is going to go a bit more in depth than it needs to to answer the question, but I figure you guys deserve a bit of extra explanation for being awesome and providing me with so many good times reading speculations.

Many of our weapons are built similar to the Chinese QBZ or German G36 where several weapons (carbine, assault rifle, LMG, sniper rifle, etc) are built off the same platform. We have a huge number of variant parts that can mix and match to create different unique weapons. A lot of the parts will be unique to certain weapon types, so a barrel on an assault rifle won't necessarily be the same as on your LMG so that we have distinct silhouettes and looks, each of these weapons also behaves completely differently in game from an ammo count, accuracy, firing rate, damage, etc. standpoint.

The Bolt Driver is an NC specific sniper rifle, each empire will have their own ES sniper rifle, but due to the way our weapon platforms work, they'll have some variation even within the sniper rifles, this is the "sidegrade" concept you've heard us talk about a lot. While an NC sniper might start default with a high-damage, slow firing rate, magazine fed bolt driver, that player would be able to unlock variants of the bolt driver that might be semi automatic, or breach loaded for extra damage, or anything in between that makes sense for us to make. TR, and VS will be similarly versatile. So, if you want to be the high damage sniper guy, you don't necessarily have to play NC! You can be on TR and unlock a higher damage sniper rifle than the default which is semi-auto and has low recoil to allow for successive shots. Similarly if you want to be a super high firing rate VS player, you can unlock a pulsar that has some higher burst potential at the trade-off for, say, damage over distance, or ammo capacity, or whatever we think the best tradeoffs are to make the guns balanced and fun.

Now, that being said, it may very well be that the highest possible damage sniper rifle will be available to NC, and TR can get to have a weapon as powerful as one of the best NC rifles, but not quite as beefy, and likewise the NC might be able to get a very high fire rate gauss rifle, but not quite as high as the highest fire rate weapon available to the TR. This will allow us to retain the unique empire feel without having it be a straight up "these guys are always like this and those guys are always like that" vibe.

Savvy?

edit: by the way, RadarX saying it's common pool is just email fail on our part, I had said it "was common pool" meaning in PlanetSide, not "that gun was supposed to be common pool".

The image isn't showing up, but I'm assuming it's the now-NC-specific Sweeper?

Maybe you can get mods to make your SMG perform more like a shotgun.

I imagine that, for NC, this will equate to "take off the sight" based on the empire-specific "slow and hard" feel.

Well, the SMG is supposed to be a mobile weapon. Maybe they'll extend some sort of common pool shotgun to medics. Or even ES shotguns. I wouldn't be terribly surprised. Or maybe they'll give it to light assault.

I'm sorry, I just got the mental image of watching Dal in light assault rocketing towards something with his jetpack, and a battle cry of "Close the gap!" soaring over voice comms...

What's that big whooshy sucking sound?

Oh, right. It's the sound of all my free time being slurped up. Where did it come from? From GDC, of course!

Video 1 is primarily Higby tooling around in his Reaver nuking Magriders in a combined arms battle with suspiciously little anti-air...

Videos 2 and 3 are a mix of infantry and tank (with Higby's Vanguard action right around the split) culminating in an Amp Station battle that continues into 4.

#3 has some talk about Galaxies as spawn/resupply, cert tree unlocks, and a glimpse of the spawn menu showing the 6 classes (and Higby's equipment loadout for 3 of Light Assault, Medic, and Engineer). The other three classes shown in the menu are Infiltrator, Heavy Assault, and MAX.

So it's gameplay footage of Higby playing live with around 45 people split between *at* GDC and back in the San Diego offices. It looks like there was some general scripting for the sake of the demo; towards the end of the third video Higby comments that one of the on-screen messages was the signal for the opposition to give some ground up so his team could demo the capturing.

It's filmed off the audience-facing flat panel TV, so the quality's not great when he's moving quick, but it's definitely encouraging to see the detail in motion and rendered live. The Amp Station looks like a badass fight to participate in from a design perspective.

I drop half an hour of gameplay vid in y'all's laps, and get no comment.

Mmm. Just got a chance to read through Higby's recent "AMAA" (apparently, it's a common reddit acronym for "Ask Me Almost Anything") on reddit.

Om nom nom nom. Lots of stuff people following the news and interviews about the game already know, but a few delicious nuggets of new info in addition to being a pretty large repository of succinct Q/A.

As an example, the confirmation that engineers can deploy manned turrets and the new info that there's also engineer-deployable cover that can be unlocked... I think that probably sealed the deal for me.

As a player who leans support rather than a twitch marksman, I figured I'd be doing some squad leader unlocks for the squad force multiplier type stuff, and likely either medic or engineer. But there's just something about being able to pick a spot, draw a line in the ground, and drop tools to facilitate a manned defense that just makes me go all tingly in a way that Spitfires (or even Sentry Guns in TF/TF2) never did.

Of course, I'll also have to spend some certs on pimping out the battle bus I plan on providing for my squadmates to ride in style, and I have to admit that light assault and infiltrator (now that it's been revealed to have some interesting reconnaissance roles) also look like they might be worth dabbling some time in. And MAXes, because they're just plain fun with the right weapons systems, of course.

I think I've got plenty to keep my plate full when I can finally get my hands on this game.

I'm more interested in what infiltrators will be capable of. I loved slinking around bases in a manner tangentially comparable to one suffering from influenza. That is to say, one who refused to cease hacking and spreading viruses. I am deeply saddened that it seems hacking was cut down quite a bit. I'm becoming nervous that too much Battlefield 3 will have leaked in, 'cause I'm more interested in the non-shooty bits of PS2 - infiltration, piloting, engineering, etc.

You'll just have to shoot back in preemptive defense!

Oh, in the good news category... I saw it mentioned that they were considering shotguns as sort of an "advanced weapon" cert for infiltrators. I think that makes the shotgun medic much more likely if even infiltrators might be able to get them.

Mmm. The NC engineer looks glorious.

Also, click here for unembeddable video. Sony released an edited 3 minute direct-record highlights reel with a rehearsed Higby narration. It's mostly footage from his GDC demo, so it's not strictly new, but it's nice. It also makes a good marketing video due to its trailer-like length.
