Haven't bought it yet, been sick for the past month or so, and I prefer going to the bookstore to buy my books. I'm going to Costco tomorrow and Barnes and Noble is practically next door so will get it then, unless Santa says to wait another week. ;)

Just saw Hugo this past weekend. Love it! What a wonderful surprise when a movie turns out to be so much more than what I expected it to be. I’ll be getting the book next. In hardcover.

Finally saw this. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

But steampunk it is not.

No, it's not.

It has the illusion of it and the dressing. But there are only two items in the entire movie (one of which gets about 3 seconds of screentime) that would be considered of steampunk tech.

It's set at the turn of century, it has a lot of cogs and gears (inside of clocks, which is normal), but that's about where it ends. The majority of the movie is not meant to be fantastical or science fiction (other than taking some liberties with historical events).

One lone clockwork gadget doesn't make it steampunk.

If it's different in the books, great. I would have liked to see them explore that more. But the movie itself: not steampunk.

It's Steampunk. I'm sorry your definition is based on a conflation of the Victorian Aesthetic (as idealized by colonial perceptions) and Walt Disney's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Beyond that, I'm supremely sorry you think a cosplay definition of a technical term is actually going to convince me that your understanding of Steampunk is superior to mine, when you're not evening considering the narratological implications of *punk, Punk, and liminal spaces as they relate to the psychological and social liminality created by industrialization of our marketplaces and the commodification of persons. No, it obviously didn't occur to you that the literature professor's understanding of genre, mode, and method isn't concerned with frivolous and poorly executed popular fads, did it?

I think Khross has invented the No True Steampunk fallacy. ;)

Aizle:

Too bad Numbuk is the one calling it not Steampunk, right?

I purchased the hard bound book and read it in its entirety on my flight to Nashville last Thursday! It was a very good story, but you really need the illustrations in the hard bound book to convey the total story. It is well worth it. :)

Thank you Khross for this recommendation!

Now to finish The Hunger Games...got through 3/4s of the book on my return flight from Nashville yesterday! :)
