If your country was invaded by another country that, if victorious, would establish a new political/economic model that was significantly more aligned with your preferences than the current one, would you support or oppose that other country in its efforts?

Since my political preferences include not invading countries and eschew the use of deadly force except as a last resort, this is a bit oxymoronic.

Don't you usually support Democratic Party candidates?

That hardly implies I agree with every decision the party makes.

And that's hardly the point of the question ...

I selected oppose, because even as much as I dislike many of the positions of various political parties in the US, the system itself is fairly solid.

Now, if I were living in an authoritarian regime or dictatorship, my answer would be different.

I don't think the current American situation is such to require the armed overthrow of the system, even if the invaders were promising to restore actual Constitutional government.

Even if it was, what assurances do we have that these benevolent forces could be trusted to do what they say.

Is this a serious intellectual debate a or a ploy to hang people on their support of American foreign policy. I really hope it's the first one.

Move to Canada until things die down and see if I like what the new overlords are doing.

In the case of your country, the new overlords would almost certainly be the Chinese, and they'd do it if they could find a way to keep the U.S. out of the fight, and after they've built themselves enough naval air power to support the attack. Australia has an incredible amount of territory and coastline to defend, and only 3 brigades to do it with. That, and your navy hasn't bothered to get itself a decent aircraft carrier nor a single nuclear-powered attack submarine, and you've retired the F-111s so your long-range strike is now in the hands of the Super Hornets, which are much newer, but considerably shorter-legged.

I put oppose, of course. But I don't like the connections that I can see you trying to make with this poll. Just because I would never support an invasion under our current form of government, that doesn't mean I wouldn't support such an invasion under any circumstances. If we had a North Korea style tyrannical dictatorship, then I absolutely would.

Thats cause it'll take them a while to get here, and by the time they get here, they'd have to have passed enough countries for us to notice... plenty of time to train lazer sharks =P

You have thousands of miles of empty land that they would be happy to build on. After they kill off everything that they can't eat.

Raell, there is a very good reason most of that land is empty. No water.

True, but if you pronounce Australia really slowly it sounds like "my solar farm".

Its not likely that Sweden would invade us, but if they were to? I'd be behind it ;)

You say that, but it's just that their longboats keep sinking halfway across the Atlantic.

The OP was a political/economic model more to your liking, not a sexual model with blondes more to your liking.

Yes, it would take them a while. This is purely theoretical, not something likely in the next 10 years. Yes, you'd see them coming too. However, if you A) couldn't rely on the U.S. and B) didn't build up your own defenses, you'd be in serious trouble. Granted, you could almost certainly count on help from Britain, Canada, France, and maybe Japan and South Korea or a few others, but that's a lot less help than the U.S. and Britain and France in particular are awfully far away.

You have lots of open space and China has lots of people. They need Lebensraum far worse than Hitler ever did. Heck, Indonesia needs it. That's why so much of Australian defense policy focuses on them. Indonesia is no China, but it's closer and has a lot of motivation. On the other hand they're a lot less likely than China to develop the ability to project power to the degree that Australia couldn't handle it.

Seriously, buy yourselves a smaller carrier, a few AEGIS escorts and 5 or 6 nuclear attack subs. Australia is an island. It doesn't need a big army. It needs a big (relative to the population) navy.

The only thing worth anything in Australia are things you can dig out of the earth... we have lots of those. But it's not a great place to live, lots of things that can kill you, even if you're a good survivalist.

Majority of the country lives on the coast due to the lack of water and most of the time, we can't even support the current population without desalination plants.

Personally I'm more a healer type... So I'll just group with another country, if we do get invaded =P

If it isn't a panda, the Chinese will kill and eat everything when they invade.

I'm aware of all of that, and I'm sure the Chinese are too. However, mineral resources are very attractive and deslination of drinking water isn't all that hard. When you have 1.2 billion people and counting, the problems of living in Australia start to look attractive to solve.

I think that nationalities are becoming obsolete. However, I would fight against the invading armies since only a psychotic regime would choose to invade a democratic and prosperous nation such as our own, a nation that generates an enormous amount of wealth for the entire world. I reject the premise that the new political model would be better, since the invasion clearly demonstrated otherwise. Invading first world countries shows that your political model has enormous flaws, likely in other areas as well.
