At some level it's a sad commentary on current society that in economically hard hit areas like Michigan (with Detroit probably driving that number a lot) that many people look to "invest" in the lottery instead of putting that money to actual good use.

I remember about 10 years ago, there was a big jackpot (Mega, Super, don't quite remember). My boss said he had a rule that he never played lotteries unless it was for a billion dollars. I pointed out that it was up to a quarter billion ... He bit.

Needless to say, we didn't win.

There was no one at the machine when I was at the grocery store last night. I had a ten in my pocket, so I bit.

A day or so to dream about it, then back to reality.

I have a friend of mine that buys a ticket maybe once a week or so. $52/year to be entertained by the dream when you make a living wage is one thing.

I think I've bought a total of 1 or maybe 2 tickets in my life. Usually once the jackpot gets obscenely large.

Well, if someone from Detroit wins, maybe we will have one less on Food stamps...

Then again, they prolly won't tell the state that they won

;)

No lottery in my state, but I'd buy a ticket every once in awhile for fun if we had one.

I've wasted much more money on much less before. A few bucks here and there wouldn't impact me at all, and like Michael it's fun to dream about occasionally.

I I used to know a guy back in California that would buy a whole roll of those scratch lottery tickets once a month. He made about $50k a year doing it after the expense of buying the roll of tickets every month. It kind of blew my mind, really.

I find the habit of buying a ticket when the jackpot gets super-large to be kind of amusing. It's almost like people are saying "oh, only 30 million this week? the hell with that, that's chump change." I know it's probably more like they just don't want to spend money on lottery tickets and only really think about it when it gets attention for big numbers and do it just for the hell of it, but it's still sort of funny.

Yeah, I happily play the regular jackpots, $1 mil would be just fine, even after taxes ...
