Note on Spoilers. This thread is open to all TV spoilers. Any book spoilers should be put in spoiler text.
Thought it made sense to make a new thread for season 2 since the other one is a 15 page behemoth, and season 2 starts this Sunday.

To start it off, here is a 22 minute refresher on season 1, as well as a preview of season 2.

I can't be the only one who watched, can I?

Just watched it. It was pretty awesome, with a couple exceptions I didn't like. They are softening up Cercei's character, I'm not sure that is a good idea. I also didn't like the Littlefinger-Cercei scene. I get why they did it, but I just don't think Littlefinger is stupid enough to provoke Cercei like that.

I love the shot of King's Landing from the balcony of the Hand of the Tower. Grey Wind was looking pretty awesome, too.

I think I'm going to like Davos' casting.

I like the balance they struck with the scene between Robb and Catelyn.

They also used hunting down Robert's bastards as a good way to really paint Slynt as an awful guy.

Man, the episode was so great. I want a show with nothing but Tyrion! Dinklage is such a great actor.

Me either. Can't even get HBO here.

So how'd you like the episode?

That's an unfortunate name for a man of his...stature.

There's one thing he can't play: a tall man.

Really good season opener. Of all the plot lines I didnt find myself thinking any were particularly weak, I enjoyed them all.

This isnt much of a spoiler but just in case:

Spoiler:
They are very good at pushing the "You will really really really hate the new king Joffrey Baratheon". However I think they've already pushed it to a point where going much further might tip it into over the top. He's already killed Sean Bean and all of his air time seems crafted towards making you hate him. I assume he was the one who ordered the soldiers actions at the very end? Or was it the mother?

I've been a bit disappointed by the first two episodes this season, actually. The pacing seems too rushed; it's like they're distilling everything down to bullet points. I suspect that's because so much happens in the second book/season, and the various characters' storylines are more separate than they were in the first book/season, so they simply don't have the time to do as many establishing shots or to ease the viewer into conversations/encounters. They have to just jump right to the heart of everything in order to squeeze it all into a single season. Personally, I'd prefer they just split the book into two seasons.

Also (spoiler for episode 2 and book 2):

Spoiler:
Did I just miss the fact that Melisandre and Stannis were having sex in the books, or was that something the show added? It's been a while since I read the books, but my recollection is that she was obviously draining his energy/essence to produce the shadows and perform her magic, and there was a sexual/succubus overtone to it all, but I don't recall having the impression that she and Stannis were literally having sex.

They don't get actual scenes depicting it, RD, but, yeah.. it's very heavily implied that a significant part of her mojo derives from it.

Spoiler:
The shadow-forms that kill Renly and assassinate whatshisface in Storm's End, in particular, are almost certainly sexually fueled sorceries, considering she's depicted "birthing" the one that goes into Storm's End.

In short, I don't think blood is the only bodily fluid from a King that has power, if you get my drift...

DFK! and I were commenting after watching last night (he comes over to view since I'm the one with HBO) that several things appear to be moving pretty fast. He was confused as to why Tyrion's establishing power seems to be drawn out much more than in the books, but I think I captured the reason in my suggestion.

It's not that things are happening fast, or slow -- it's that the series is taking a much more strictly chronological approach than the books, which Martin would allow to set aside some characters or regions for entire books at a time.

For instance, IIRC, Pike doesn't show up until A Storm of Swords. Theon gets sent off from the Riverlands early to mid-A Clash of Kings, and then just disappears for the rest of the book, while A Storm of Swords does catching up on the Pike angle. Instead, we see Theon arrive on Pike in the second episode.

Likewise, the reason it appears that Tyrion's rocking the Small Council boat is taking a longer amount of time is that in the second book, when Tyrion arrives at King's Landing, I think they kind of push non-King's Landing PoV's aside for a few hundred pages, so it "gets ahead of" the rest of the world, and it seems like Tyrion's this whirlwind of activity because he gets a lot done before time passes elsewhere in the world, as it were. Whereas here in the series, we're breaking that up with scenes for Dany, Theon, Jon, etc., and Tyrion's moves in King's Landing are stretching out for 3-4 episodes, it looks like.

But I'll echo DFK!'s curiosity here to see how the writers decide to pace, interleave, and edit Seasons 3 and 4 if it continues to get renewed.

Huh. Thanks, Kaffis. I guess I saw a bunch of dots and just thought, "Hm, that kind of looks like a puppy," instead of connecting the dots and realizing, "Oh! It actually is a puppy."

Umm... What? I think you need to review what happens when, as Theon most certainly doesn't disappear halfway through A Clash of Kings. Pretty much every single thing you say in this paragraph is completely and entirely wrong. I do agree with the rest of your post though.

Hmm. Okay. Like I (think I) said, that entire post was working off of memory. And my memory is notoriously dodgy. ;)

I think I skipped/skimmed Theon's chapters so I could get back to Tyrion's. So, I imagine season 2 would seem a lot like reading the book to me.

I get lots of tweets (via Twitter duh!) re: GoT... many have links to reviews/articles... I believe in one article a producer mentioned they are splitting up book 3 into 2 seasons (3 & 4). In that same article, he mentioned something happening in book 3, that if pulled off correctly, could be one of the greatest scenes in TV history (please no spoilers but I am curious from those of you that read Storm of Swords if this statement has any merit).

I am only on page 250 of Clash of Kings right now... I have noticed more differences with editorial choices/liberties this go 'round versus book 1/season 1. I am already seeing things in first two episodes that I haven't even read yet (and some things I have read that haven't appeared yet on TV).

Odom Leah,

Yes, that statement absolutely has merit. If they do it right, I fully expect it to bring Twitter to its knees.

Aegnor, can you spoiler-tag or PM me what scene you think is being referred to?

Spoiler for book 3:
Spoiler:
Well, I think it's pretty safe to say that the Red Wedding will bring Twitter to its knees if the fans of the show Tweet.

Would it be okay if we kept the TV series threads spoiler-free, and maybe had an all-inclusive Song of Ice and Fire thread for those that are caught up?

I only ask because my willpower is non-existant.

And then you'll click on those other threads. ;)

that's okay, I haven't read any of the books. Nevertheless, the Song of Ice and Fire Wiki has seen its share of my IP addresses.

I don't object to the notion, but it might be a little awkward with cross-thread references and such. I'll be happy to be extra-diligent about labelling my spoilers, though.

So it was just announced that HBO would be picking up GoT for a 3rd season. With the record DVD/Bluray sales, and the series high ratings for the S2 premier, it was kind of a foregone conclusion.

Now the question is whether that particular scene will make it in to season 3 or season 4. I've heard that it might be the season 3 finale.

That wouldn't surprise me. If you continue doing things chronologically, I suspect it ends up midway through Storm of Swords.
