So if you cant handcuff them what do you do with a 6 year old that is tearing up a room? My vote is submission hold like the Boston Crab, shown here:

Now that's if you're dealing with a lone 6 year old. For multiples you'll need to go with a body slam or possibly pile driver. On to safety mats of course, they are minors after all.

The news coming out of Georgia today revolves around a 6-year-old kindergartner who threw such a violent tantrum that school officials called police, who handcuffed her for her own safety.

But the real story is this: Many people are siding with police.

"I agree with the school, let the police cuff her. If anyone at the school would have touched her the parents would have sued and said how wrong they were," said one commenter at WMAZ-TV in Georgia, where coverage of the story is leading to a lively discussion on parenting skills.

Some commenters said they're outraged at the notion of a kindergartner in handcuffs, but many others are lining up behind the commenter who said the girl was plenty old enough to know right from wrong: "This child needs to know there are consequences to your actions."

Here's what happened, according to WMAZ:

Officials at Creekside Elementary School in Milledgeville, located in central Georgia, called police on Friday to report that pupil Salecia Johnson was out of control. They said they had first tried to call her mother, but couldn't reach her.

School officials told WMAZ that they feared the child was a danger to herself and others. She was crying, tearing items off the wall, biting a door knob, trying to break a glass frame and jumping on top of a paper shredder. At one point, she reportedly knocked over a shelf, injuring the school principal, according to the Associated Press.

When police arrived, they tried to calm the girl, but she began acting out again -- and was handcuffed. Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord defended that decision.

"Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule," Swicord told WMAZ.

The child was handcuffed and taken to the police station until her parents could retrieve her, outraging her relatives.

"A 6-year-old in kindergarten. They don't have no business calling the police and handcuffing my child," Earnest Johnson, the girl's father, told WMAZ. The child's mother said the girl suffers "mood swings" but that was still no reason for authorities to treat her so harshly.

"She might have misbehaved, but I don't think she misbehaved to the point where she should have been handcuffed and taken downtown to the police department," the girl's aunt, Candace Ruff, told the TV station.

Related note, my mom's students posted to YouTube how they spent their spring break. Before anyone asks, yes these are literally my mother's students:

Schools will go the way of maximum security prisons where everything will be recorded and done by procedure. And by the looks of those students, it will be good practice for their future homes.

I took one look at the thread title, and was not expecting the bolded statement at all.

I have to say that there is quite a bit of truth in the next statement. Had the school attempted to restrain the child, there would have been quite a backlash. Seems to be a no win situation anyway. The parents would have been outraged either way, I'd imagine.

How long does it take for:

1) The teacher to try to calm her down, get fed up and call the principal,
2) The principal to check it out and call the parents,
3) The school to be unable to contact parents and contact police,
4) The police to show up
5) The police to try to calm her down, give up, and handcuff her.

That is a LONG, LONG tantrum.

As harmless as that seems, I think no teacher (who wants to keep their job) would ever lay a hand on a student. So much potential for litigious parents. The teacher would likely not get the benefit of the doubt.

From this article:

My bolding added for emphasis

Quote:
My mom just told me a child at a local school wrote on his face with a permanent marker. The teacher tried to get it off with a wash cloth, and it left a red mark on the side of his face. The parent called the media, and the teacher lost her job.

My mom, my very own mother, said, "Can you believe that woman did that?" I felt hit in the gut. I honestly would have probably tried to get the mark off as well. To think that we might lose our jobs over something so minor is scary. Why would anyone want to enter our profession? If our teachers continue to feel threatened and scared, you will rob our schools of our best and handcuff our efforts to recruit tomorrow's outstanding educators.

Teacher have to be VERRRRY careful about laying so much as a finger on a student. It's a touchy (I see what I did there) subject.

Maybe they should have hog-tied her, that'd get her attention. And she's probably flexible enough to not have trouble breathing.

If she needed to be restrained then handcuffs would be the preferred method. I can't say if she needed to be restrained I wasn't there.

I wouldn't want the cops or the faculty taking the kind of liberties I would with my own child to retrain her so they need to do that in the approved manner assuming the situation warranted it.

When I tried to view this at work, YouTube was crapping out on me as it frequently does when it chokes on the bandwidth available at work. I got just far enough to see the initial shove.

I was looking forward to seeing the rest of the video here at home, but it appears that whomever posted it wised up that perhaps it's not good to have trouble-making on public display and record...

With as much violence as are in schools (Philadelphia schools had 30k+ incidents over Las maybe 5 years) I would not be surprised to see a taser or spray approved for use on children be deployed. Kids today know they've got a hell of a lot of leeway to mess with adults. You can have a 6'1" 200lb person menacing you but if he's 17 all of the sudden he's a "child" and you've got to reason with him. Same thing with the perception of male vs female.

If you want a REALLY long tantrum, by all means, hit them with the stuff. Holy **** that sucks. It feels like your face is melting off for about 45 minutes. Good luck getting a 6 year old to control themselves under those conditions.

At least it would be a good reason for the tantrum.

That would seriously be the best ad slogan ever for mace.

I guess I don't really have anything to say about this except: the moment I saw "police handcuff 6 year old" my immediate reaction was "in their defense, that six year old was being kind of a dick".
