There is DLC coming that Bethesda has been hinting at for a few months:

So all of a sudden today, Skyrim doesn't work. After 5 minutes or so of play, the game freezes - and I mean freezes the entire compuer so that I have to manually power off and restart. It does this regardless of what saved game I load, even if I turn of anti-aliasing, in both windowed and regular mode (and it completely locks the computer up even windowed) and I've reinstalled twice to no avail.

Awesome. My only hops is that the problem disappears as abruptly as it appeared.

Is it only Skyrim? Random failure of game installs is very... odd

I was thinking it was only Skyrim because it didn't happen in EVE, but now it occurred in Starcraft II. I'm starting to get worried.

This used to happen on my old computer. It turns out I had a bad stick of ram. Might want to check your hardware.

EDIT:

I know you just got this computer recently, but so did I when I had the problem.

This computer has been a tad.. touchy since I got it. I don't know how to go about testing for bad RAM though, or anything else for that matter. I can't find any self-test utilities in my Catalyst Control Center, for example.

Well, I got 3Dmark11 and that made it hard lock too, so I'll be calling vendor tech support in the morning.

It's been a while, but back in the day, memtest86 was the go to memory test utility.

Put one stick in at a time, boot from a bootable memtest disc and run the test.

It might not necessarily be bad hardware. It could be timings, voltages, etc..

This is one of the advantages of buying pre-built. You can make the vendor deal with it.

Does the vendor have any forums? Did you try consulting The Oracle to see of anyone else is having similar problems with that system?

I'm going to play with it some more tonight. I did get memtest, although it's just the free version, not with a disk. I'll check out Oracle too; never heard of that before. Thanks for the tip. If that doesn't work.. calling the vendor support line tomorrow.

Edit: This is really weird. The problem doesn't seem to crop up with certain games; EVE, Deus Ex, but it is occuring with SC2 and Skyrim. I'm thinking this is some kind of software issue. Deus Ex has pretty sophisticated graphics. Going to try with a few other programs. The video card (Radeon 6970) updated its drivers not long ago, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? I did try rolling back the drivers but no luck there.

"The Oracle" would be Bethesda's Official Skyrim Forums. "Consulting the Oracle" is a play on a quote by T. S. Eliot ...

Well, in the case, the "Oracle" I'm referring to is simply www.google.com.

unfortunately I don't know how to refine a search well enough to get something accurate.

It seems to be oriented on the software I'm running. the memory tester indicated no errors. I suspect a driver, GPU, or possibly motherboard issue. Of the 3 games that I have tried that don't seem to have major problems, 2 have AMD/Radeon advertised in their openings, and I'm running a Radeon 6970.

could still be heat related

Find a utility that monitors and logs temperatures every minute or so...

Check it it after your next crash.

Picked this up a while ago when it was on sale, figured I'd wait 'till Steamworks got added to play.

That said, now that it is, point me to good mods, people.

Honestly, the Nexus is a creepy place with horrible moderation but it still has the best collection of mods, at least for the time being.

In any case, I'm currently using these mods:

Mods that I would shoot myself in the head without:
SkyUI
Categorized Favorites Menu
Better Sorting
A Quality World Map (roads on, and those $*%@ing clouds off!)

I also manually removed the Bethesda logo on startup.

Nice, but not completely essential mods:
Colored Map Markers
Time on Loading Screen
Lockpick Graduation
Unread Books Glow

Worthwhile but totally cosmetic mods:
Sounds of Skyrim - The Wilds
Sounds of Skyrim - The Dungeons
Silent Killer (gets rid of the critical hit "bonk!" sound effect when you stab people)

I don't think they've finished "Sounds of Skyrim - The Cities" yet, but it's been awhile since I've checked.

But of course there are really only two mods that you absolutely need.

I like the Dangerous Dragons one.. makes the dragon fights a lot more challenging.

I haven't played Skyrim for a few weeks(waiting for llamaRCA to finish her companion mod before jumping back in) but when I did play, these are the mods I used that I couldn't live without:

SkyUI
Better dynamic snow
Killmove+
RCRN Legacy- Hybrid Shaders
Sounds of Skyrim(wilds and dungeons)
Unique Leveled Items
Enhanced Dynamic Weather System
MOAR DRAGONS
Deadly Dragons(I wouldn't recommend either of these for a first time player)

Upon further reflection, posh mudcrabs is actually the most essential mod.

Speaking of mudcrabs, has anyone else noticed that they seem to get bigger in each successive game?

They are building up to the finale... Crabpeople overtake the world!

I've heard talk of a Zoidberg mudcrab mod. Sounds like a must-have to me.

Apparently there are at least two of them.

Yeah, I don't even know.

But nevermind all that. Behold: Macho Dragons

I never realized how empty my life was up until the moment I heard a dragon yell "Snap into a Slim Jim!"
