So I've been jonzing to re-watch all six of these movies in correct order, and looking around, haven't found a digital source, so I went looking for blu-ray's and found this.
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Complet ... 611&sr=8-1

I was just about to pull the trigger, when I noticed the reviews. Over 2k reviews averaging less than three stars!! Wow!

I'm still tempted to buy them. After skimming the reviews it seems the majority of the complaints are people annoyed with some of the changes made (even though many were considered positive). For example, a lot of people complained about a scene where R2 is hiding from the Jawa, and some CGI rocks in front of him mysteriously disappear when he rolls out of the hiding spot. While it sounds cheesy, and possibly even a little distracting depending on how obvious it is, it's not something that would prevent me from buying or watching the movie. Other people complained about the color of explosions, and light sabers, and other such stuff, that honestly wouldn't bother me much.

I guess if I had a choice to buy them in their original form (with all of their original flaws), I'd probably prefer that, but since I don't, is it worth pulling the trigger to get the blu-ray assemblage for $99?

/ponder

Edit: Please don't suggest bootlegs/torrents. That isn't going to happen. It's either worth paying $99 to watch or it's not.

It really depends on how much of a purist you are. George Lucas changed a lot of stuff in the original trilogy(like adding Darth Vader's NOOOOOOO when he picks up the Emperor and tosses him down the shaft, or Obi-wan's Krayt Dragon call to scare the sand people away). If those kinds of things don't bother you, get the blu-ray set. If not, don't.

I bit the bullet on buying the two trilogy sets individually on sale at a local Target for $40 apiece.

I haven't pulled them out to watch them, yet. Perhaps I shall do so and let you know how the transfer quality strikes me.

Star Wars was a great trilogy, it's just too bad that George never made any others.

Shush. It's that kind of thinking that might convince him to make more trilogies. Maybe he should leave well-enough-alone and avoid doing something strange like...say...making a prequel trilogy with god-awful dialogue, terrible special effects, a piss-poor story, and horrendous acting.

I consider myself a fan, but definitely not a purist. My lack of attention to small details prevents me from noticing things that piss other people off. I honestly really don't care (and wouldn't notice) if something was changed from the original movie. However, I probably would be annoyed by obvious annoyances that distract me from the movie and make me say 'that was dumb!' out loud. :p

Another consideration. I've pretty much stopped buying physical media of any kind in favor of digital forms of distribution. It seems that these movies are not available anywhere in that form though. I'm wondering, if I'm patient enough, if they would eventually show up on something like Amazon Prime or Netflix.

It's going to be a while before true Blu-ray quality is available over [legal] digital distribution. Uncompressed you're looking at 30-60GB.

A rip of the 1959 Ben Hur BR is pushing 50GB.

Yeah, for 95% of my visual media viewing, i've conceded that there are quality compromises. The trade off for streaming is mobility. I can have it available on almost any platform anywhere at any time on a moments notice (as long as I have Internet access).

I've made a few exceptions and purchased blu-rays for a few movies, and several concert videos. I thought this Star Wars set might merit such an exception.

Episode 3 is stunningly gorgeous. That is all.

Thanks Kaffis. I'd see that comment in other places.

I've pretty much decided to order this for $90 from Amazon at this point.

Thanks for the feedback.

I strongly suggest watching them in Machete order.

After reading about Machete Order, I'm going to have to watch the series in this order... if I can find 10 hours to rub together.

Yeah, I finally got around to doing it over the course of a weekend. At first I found the transition between old and new movies a bit jarring, but it was really only for the first 10-15 minutes following each switch. Overall, I really enjoyed the approach.

This is actually a good suggestion for newcomers to the series. (do those exist outside the 10 year old set?)

Unfortunately, Episode I is probably the one that will get 10 year olds hooked. (character they can most relate to)

Then again, I got hooked at 4 on Epi IV so ....

I was going to type this exact thing, but was beaten to it.

My kids will all watch these movies for the first time in that order. Period.

So when you guys are doing Machete order, are you doing with or without Ep I? His argument to drop ep1 is compelling, and not just because it sucks.

Quote:
Virtually no Jar-Jar. Jar-Jar has about 5 lines in Episode II, and zero in Episode III.
No midichlorians. There is only one reference to midichlorians after Episode I, and in the context it appears to mean something as benign as “DNA.”
No Jake Lloyd. Sorry Jake, your acting is terrible and I never really wanted to see Darth Vader as a little boy.
No confusing Padme/Queen switcheroo. The whole subplot with Padme and her decoy makes absolutely no sense. It’s clear that this was just so people could interact with Padme without knowing she was the Queen, but it’s incredibly convoluted and pointless.
Less confusing master/apprentice relationships. Darth Sidious is training Count Dooku, Obi-Wan is training Anakin. No other trainer/trainee relationships exist to confuse the backstory. Fewer characters to learn about, so the story is more focused.
Nothing about trade disputes. The “problem” as of Episode II is that a group of systems want to leave the Republic. This is much easier to understand for a kid than trade disputes.
No pod racing. Seriously, who gives a ****? An action sequence for the sake of an action sequence and it goes on forever. A huge number of plot holes surrounding gambling and the subsequent freeing of Anakin are removed as well.
No virgin birth. We simply don’t know or care who Anakin’s father is, and the subtle implication that it’s Palpatine is gone.

I think I'm going to view it in this order and see how it flows for the eventual kid viewing. My other concern about showing the prequels is that EP3 is **** DARK, man. Sure, it's nothing to us seasoned veterans, but to a 5 year old? Seeing Vader's legs and arm sliced off and left to burn by Obi Wan might be a bit much.

I think the big point behind Machete Order is to have the movies flow in a certain way. And that involves either dropping Ep I or moving it to the end as a supplement. So I'll watch it that way. I'm fine with just skipping The Phantom Menace, personally.

That's a fair point, but Episode IV has a Ponda Baba's severed arm (and incidentally, the most blood shown) lying on the floor, in close up.

In point of fact, there are a huge number of limb removals in these movies...In every film except I, someone loses at least 1 arm or hand.

Episode I: Darth Maul bisected

Episode II: Anakin loses an arm
3PO loses a head

Episode III: Darth Tyranus loses two hands, followed by a head shortly thereafter.
Anakin loses 2 legs and an arm.
General Grevious loses 2 arms.

Episode IV: Ponda Baba loses an arm
C-3PO loses an arm.

Episode V: Wampa loses an Arm.
Luke loses a hand.
3PO loses Arms, legs, calves, head

Episode VI:
Vader loses a hand.

One would think Lucas was trying to signal something.

Drop it completely. If they want to watch it on their own later, that's fine. But their initial viewing will have it omitted entirely.

Like the author says, they lose very little (if anything) by not having a part of the line-up. It's very simple for anyone new to connect the dots as to what is going on with just Episode II to go off of.

I tried to re-watch Episode I again before SWTOR was released. And I couldn't do it. And I did see that movie in the theater multiple times. Even camped out for tickets with a massive amount of people. I don't regret those memories, they were awesome to have at the time. But the movie today for me does not hold up.

- "That is so wizard, Ani."
- "Are you an angel?"
- "There was no father."
- "Midichlorians..."
- Greg Proops' two-headed alien
- Blowing up the main ship in a Steve Urkellian "Did I do thaaat?" manner

You'll notice Jar Jar isn't even on that short list. For me, the above is far, far worse than anything Jar Jar brought to the table of the Star Wars mythos.

There were only two things that Episode 1 needed to portray. 1. Obi-Wan losing his mentor and thus gaining a padawan in Anakin. 2. The rise of Senator Palpatine. And the latter is done so subtly on screen that it is hardly worth mentioning as an argument for watching the movie. The former, well, again new viewers get the gist of it with Episode II.

So, not being five years old, and having already seen the movies and fully grasping 'trade disputes' and such, what is the value of *me* watching it in machete order?

I just haven't seen any of the movies in years, and would like a fresh viewing.. all of it, for better or worse.

For me, Midgen, the benefit was mostly that it felt "fresh" in a way it hadn't in years. Some of that was just the simple fact that I was watching it in a new order, of course, but I do think some of it came from the machete order specifically.

I can see potential merit in the argument that splicing Anakin's fall in immediately before Jedi could highlight nuance or change the implied tone of Luke's struggle against the same temptations in contrast. Next time I have a day to burn on such an endeavor, I'll give it a run to test the theory.
