This. I was able to start on it last month, early, and eventually gave up because blizzard's downloader kept closing on its own and the computer claimed it was messing up.

Really? I was underwhelmed by beta (I was in closed beta for months). I loved D1 and D2. Maybe playing with more people and getting past level 12/13 will change my mind. *shrug*

I think I need to read the thread that Numbuk linked to change my mind enough to go buy it and give it another chance.

Diablo 3 dramatically picks up after the point that the beta ends...it makes the beta very much feel like little more than a tutorial.

Oh, and what the beta covered is probably no more than 1/4 to 1/3 of Act 1.

The game is quite amazing and continues to get better as you unlock more options/skills/etc.

So, so much butt-hurt on the diablo forums. Game launch was far from smooth but, honestly, who didn't see that coming? Palpatine would be pleased with all the hate and rage coming from some of these fanboys.

I'm enjoying it. And yes it does seem to get exponentially better after the Skeleton King (beta's end). I'm getting into the part where I can craft rares and gems are beginning to drop (I've made 3 rare helms so far, all had a socket).

The thing I really like is how monster tactics continue to change-up on you, forcing you to never get into a rut with your attack patterns and abilities. Sometimes you'll find you'll go from fine to near-death (or death) and it's all due to how a new monster acts differently than what you've grown accustomed to up to that point. It certainly keeps you on your toes, and I like that.

The only time I ever had to worry about "tactics" in Diablo II was when I was playing a melee class an an Oblivion Knight cast Iron Maiden on me (all damage I do is reflected back at me). In hell difficulty, and with a paladin with zeal, it meant instantaneous death if I attacked when that curse was put on me. So the "tactic" was "run away and scream like a little girl until the curse wore off." I can even still hear the exact sound of that curse in my head, and it still makes me shudder in fear.

So anyone beat it yet? Yesterday there were reports of someone soloing it with a barbarian around 12 hours, and some korean/japanese teams beating it in 7 hours.

Playing through the beginning of the first act, I was "Awww, yay, quillfiends! I missed you!" #nostalgiaoverload

Had a headache last night and didn't get to play much (plus the bloody power kept going on and off)...are the rakanishus back? I loved those little guys.

Beating it? You mean, "Completing Normal difficulty" which is basically a tutorial walk-through? It wouldn't surprise me if rushers did that. I've got about 4 - 5 hours logged and I am 1/3 through Act II on normal (game has 4 Acts). If people never explored and did everything they could to blast through content, sure I could see that. Me, I explore every inch of every map. I go into all caves not related to the main quest.

But completing Normal is about the same as saying you "beat WoW" the second you dinged max level. The real game starts at nightmare difficulty (which is right after Normal).

I dunno. The game is still beat. Upping the difficulty doesn't automatically give you new content and shouldn't be an extension or "the real game". By beating it, I mean, "played through the entire game's storyline" like I think most people qualify it.

Game length is not always about how long you could spend on it.

WoW "not starting" until you hit max level is just a negative side effect of MMO design. The result of dangling carrots and subscriptions. When the game launched, mostly everything happened before you hit max level, and then you kind of didn't have much else to do. At least until they patched in new content.

I see no value to rushing through a game, but I also see no inherent virtue in playing through a game on multiple difficulty levels. Once I'm done, I'm done. *shrug*

Depends on the game. Some games I haven't found to be worth replaying on the harder levels. Some have been.

I've beaten Normal. I'm not one to call that "Beating the game" though, because the game really doesn't stop with clearing normal. You haven't even unlocked all your character abilities yet at that point.

I'm towards the end of Act 2 and I have about 14-15 hours played on my Demon Hunter. But I explore every single part of the map and I pick up every single item, so I make trips back to town very often. I'm really digging the storyline so far and I love the fact that your companions have story arcs of their own. The scoundrel isn't all that interesting, but the templar and enchantress are very interesting.

I have to say that is one of the things that surprised me the most. When I saw there was a female mage companion, I told myself "Eh, my manly barb will have some hot groupie following him around. I'll just endure having this templar guy around until then."

But the random conversations the templar had with my barb were very interesting and added a ton of depth to a normally mute sidekick. So much so that when I finally got the female enchantress follower, I found I missed having the templar around. It made more of a role-playing sense that my barbarian would prefer the templar, since their conversations showed they had a lot in common. Whereas my barbarian doesn't quite know how to talk to the finger waggler.

Totally wasn't expecting that level of role-play depth from Diablo, however small. Depth that other "pure" RPGs as of late lacked.

Well, the templar is probably the best companion for a barbarian mechanically because he has the heal. I prefer the control the enchantress gives my demon hunter with the knock back spell she has. Pretty useful especially when I get 20% more damage as long as there are no enemies within 20 yards of me.

True. I did miss the healing too, I admit. But the conversations themselves were also more engaging with the templar. Especially the random ones you get from just running around. The templar would state something, the wisened barbarian warrior would respond, and the templar would consider it... hard to explain.

Though I did like this random one with the barb and the enchantress,

"What are you mumbling?"
"Oh! I was practicing my spells. I didn't think you could hear that."
"I see."
"Just trying to stay sharp for a moment's notice, so I mumble them to myself. Is that so odd?"
"Yes."

The barbarian, while funny, was just less talkative/responsive to her. And it made perfect sense as to why. So yeah, that was the real reason for me to go back to the templar.

It seems the conversations are different between the classes then. The demon hunter and enchantress conversations are very playful and sometimes flirty. Though there are some serious ones as well, what with her current situation and all.

Finished the game on normal.

Spoiler:
Loved this game. Left a lot of loose ends for expansions, what with Aedria still out there, and I imagine the Archangel of Wisdom Malthael has still got to play some kind of role. The final battle with Diablo was pretty epic, too.

The only thing that was a little disappointing to me was the big twist wasn't very surprising at all. As soon as I found out Leah's mother was Adria and that she had "consoled" the Dark Wanderer before he left Tristram, I knew there was no hope for Leah and that she would be the way for Diablo to come back. Oh well. Also, it was kinda strange how after I killed Diablo, the angels were like "NO MORE EVIL EVER!!!" except I didn't even defeat Diablo in any special way and it's been stated that demons killed will just reform in hell later. I don't know what made this time anything special, but whatever.

Got started on a Nightmare run, but I'm a little tired at the moment, so I'm going to give it a break until tomorrow.

Loving the female Demon Hunter. She's such a *****. I'm quite fond of the Templar as a companion too.

I'm a little confused on exactly what the benefit of using 2 hand crossbows is as opposed to just one with a quiver, or a heavier bow/crossbow with a quiver. Other than the incredible cool factor of firing them like neverending revolvers. I like the hint of old-west gunfighter she has.

When you dual wield hand crossbows, you get a 15% bonus to attack speed and each shot you do alternates between your hands(each doing full damage). Also, the Archery passive skill will give you different bonuses depending on your weapon. Normal bows give you 15% more damage, hand crossbows increase your critical strike chance by 10% and I think two handed crossbows increase your critical damage by some%, but I'm not 100% sure on the two handed crossbow bonus.

Basically, it comes down to preference. While it's true that one handed crossbows can have better stats in general, it all comes down to luck. Whatever has the best combination of stats and damage is the one you should go with. Just remember that to equal the DPS of a two handed bow, you need to have two one handed crossbows with the same dps as each other(because of the alternating shots).
