Why does this silly game seem to perform better in Windowed Mode than it does in "Full Screen" ? Not only is Frame Rate the same or higher in Windowed Mode, but the game just seems to feel and play smoother, not to mention the obvious benefit if faster alt-tabbing (although I almost never do this). I also seem to have less problems with memory leaks, or whatever the issue is that caused the game to screech to a near-halt during a long play session.

Note that I'm running a full screen (maximized) window at the same resolution as my desktop (monitor native), so I have no notable loss of real estate doing this.

It just seems backwards to me that the game would perform better this way.

Anyone have similar experience?

I'm trying to squeeze every cycle out of my pc. I'll have to try windowed mode.

Every now and then I get a bit of lag but for the most part I have no performance issues with the game. That being said, I think the longest I have ever played is 4 hours.

Khross explained this to me in GChat:

Khross wrote:
Khross: because Aero acceleration is DX9 and DX10 requires a hard overlay
SWTOR is DX9 so running DX9 in a DX10 full screen slows down the game.

Khross: It's because your desktop and native game acceleration are the same.
DX10 and DX11 games turn off Aero if they want maximum performance
Especially if they're running parallel OGL operations
SWTOR in DX10 has to lock out the Alt Tabbing and Fast Switching Mechanism
but if you run it in DX9 (which is better anyway) you get a full screen and the benefit of seemless transitions

I have no clue what the differences are between DX9,10 and 11, and how those things interact. I just know that the game seems to run better for me in Windowed (Full Screen) mode.

My machine just loads really slow, so slow in fact that I tend to get kicked out of WZs before they load. Otherwise, it runs pretty smooth for a pc under spec.

Hmm..what kind of hard drive, and what OS ?

Here is a thread on the swtor forums that has some optimization information. I'm not sure how relevant any of this stuff is, especially since there have been major updates and patches since it was createad. It might be worth looking at for under spec systems though.

My suggestion would to make one change at a time, and document the change off of the system, so if things go south, you can try to back out.

Win 7, just a stock SATA drive, probably a cheapo. I'll look at the thread.

I play this game in windowed-fullscreen mode. Some games there is a distinct loss of FPS when playing windowed as opposed to fullscreen. I haven't seen that with this game.

However, I alt-tab out of the game a lot and in regular fullscreen mode, this means the area has to reload everytime you do. So playing windowed means pain-free alt-tabbing in and out of the game.

With no noticeable loss of FPS, and the ability to alt-tab out of the game painlessly, it was a no-brainer.

Maximized full screen doesn't appear to support wide resolutions or am I doing something wrong?

Odd. I am looking at mine right now and it has "Fullscreen (Windowed)" selected and my resolution is 1920x1080.

Maybe the game doesn't think your GPU can support it? Have you tried downloading the latest drivers? If your card is Nvidia, during installation there is an option to perform a clean installation (or something similar), where it will wipe out all files and registry entries from previous installs. I recommend this.

Both Nvidia and ATI have a bad habit of leaving old crap that is no longer needed. Before, it was necessary to uninstall the drivers, download Driver Sweeper and run it while booted safe mode. Nvidia finally realized that a lot of their hardcore users were doing this and so included the option to wipe the old stuff clean for you (seems to work ok).

If you do have ATI, you can likely find "Driver Sweeper" if you look around. guru3d.com used to house it, but I don't think they do anymore.

May not be the solution to your problem, but couldn't hurt.

Wide screen resolutions are definitely supported. I normally run in Windowed mode (not 'Full Screen') but I run the window at the same resolution as my desktop (1920x1080) and maximized.

The only downside I've seen in this so far is, rarely, my mouse my venture off the window to the task bar or window header and click something. It's only happened once or twice, and both times were during space missions trying to blast something that was moving towards the edge of the screen.
