Dumb question:

Wizard wands have a damage rating. Ever since Diablo 2, I (perhaps mistakenly) assumed that the rating was if the wand were to be used as a melee weapon (Yes, I know dumb).

Ok, here is the question...Is that damage rating for calculating the base damage done by cast spells with the wand equipped? I have picked up a new wand and with the damage rating higher than the one I had from the outset, it seems her damage has gone up. I just don't know if that is where the increase has come from.

Thanks.

ALL spells for every class have damage calculated from weapon damage, I believe.

This is correct. A high damaging wand, sword, axe, etc. will mean that your magic missiles (and all other spells/abilities) will hit harder. Your spell casting speed is also based on the weapon you are holding. Wands typically have wizard-only stats that other weapons don't have, like "more arcane power on crit" or "maximum arcane power limit raised" and things like that. On top of this wands are typically faster weapons. Thus, wands are more preferable over other weapons for a wizard. But a wizard can absolutely ditch a wand for a giant morning star and have their spells still hit like a truck.

Also, stacking your main stat along with a high-damaging weapon is a very efficient way to raise your dps. My demon hunter friend who is roughly the same level as my wizard (22 - 23) was given a legendary bow, but his overall DPS is around 97. My wizard's DPS, who has no legendary weapon, is closer to 900. The difference? I have a ton of intelligence (my class's main stat) and he has very little dexterity (his main stat).

1 point of a class's main stat = 1% damage increase.

It doesnt take much farming for the components to make the wand, I made one for me and my fiance in under 2 hours.

It reminds me of care bear on steroids...

Nightmare Belial was kind of a pain in the ***... Probably the hardest boss for me. I must have died 10+ times. I really should stack a little vit, 5-6k hp isn't cutting it anymore.

As a demon hunter, I noticed that basically no matter what, I would get 1 shot(or damn near close to it) if he actually hit me. So I had to make sure I never got hit. Which was a little difficult because sometimes he would smash the ground with one arm and it would be easily avoidable, but then he would do a second one handed smash really quickly and it was impossible to avoid unless I used vault to get out of the way(I think each class has an ability similar to vault, wizards have teleport, barbarians have leap...not sure about witch doctors or monks, though). Meteors are really easy to avoid, just hold down the mouse button instead of clicking to the spot you want to move to to minimize the chance of clicking on Belial and attacking him.

Dying so much, I learned his phase 3 patterns pretty quickly.

His attack possibilities:
Single (left) arm smash
1-2 (always left then right) arm smash followed by double arm smash. He will cancel the right arm hit if you move too far away from the first.
Breath attack, which can be avoided by standing on the far right side (optimum spot for the whole fight, really)
Eruption - just gotta keep moving on this one, don't get nervous and move too far, safe spots can be real small. Keep discipline handy to use shadow and/or vault depending on placement.

Phases 1 and 2 can be overwhelmed with high dps. In phase 1 the snakes always spawn in the same place and 2 DH's can drop marks and spam them down easy. In phase 2 the snake spawns are based on time, so you want to burn Belial down as fast as possible to avoid being overwhelmed.

When I was learning I would keep dying on the first eruption, but on the fight I won, I ended up going through like 5 eruption phases while my partner was dead and I even found the time to rez him at one point, lol.

Anyone having issues with the patching or after the patching? It's trying to update my game and I get an error msg...

d3-0-9858-Win-final.mpq appears to be corrupt. You may need to download this file again.

Download from where? Reinstall maybe?

Does it every time I start up the game and the download kicks into gear.

Tried doing Diablo like 10 times with 3 people, 51/51/41, didn't go well. Low guy dropped and now I'm on Hell mode. First dungeon dropped a rare lvl 44 1h xbow with 135 dps, high dex, attack speed. Put it on the AH for 200k, we'll see. It was easily the best one hander in that level range.

I'll be very surprised if that sells for 200k. I had a bow with over 200 DPS in my 30s and I got it for 20k.

Yeah, well, there are a lot of people willing to overpay for dual crossbows it seems. It sold at 230k :)

Spoiler:

You SEVERELY underpriced your sale if you had a 200+ dps bow at 30. Right now at 51 I'm using a 220 dps level 47 bow with -7 level req., so I'm not finding that very easy to believe.

You are using a really underpowered weapon. I've got a 283 dps crossbow with an empty socket if you want it. I've been trying to sell it the past few days, but it won't even sell for 20k.

I don't know, man. I'm blowing through Hell and I just started it. Having an easier time than I did when I started Nightmare, that's for sure. Seems like my damage is fine atm. The 220 was the absolute best I could get on the AH at 47, but honestly I haven't looked for anything better since I got it. I haven't needed to.

Edit: Actually, it's:
233 Dps
+24-26 poison
77 Str
111 Dex
111 int
+17 exp
Req level -7

The *best* available to me is 324 right now.

So anyone else playing a Monk?

I know we had the discussion for DHs, but anyone have thoughts on DW vs a 2H for monks?

I've been going 2H mostly because I have a very good Daibo (and I only have to worry about one weapon), but I haven't really been obsessing about looking for upgrades and such.

Coincidentally, mine is also level 20.

Having not gotten that far yet and having difficulty finding an answers for them, I have questions...

Socketing...Can gems be unsocketed once placed? Can sockets be added to items? If so, does the Blacksmith, the Jeweler, or some other entity handle this?

Gems can be removed for a fee depending on the quality of the gem and the amount you need to remove. The jeweler can remove them for you. If you haven't unlocked him yet, you will soon.

You cannot add sockets to items. Hopefully this will be added by a patch or something at some point, since I believe you could do so in D2.

Sockets can't be added as far as I know, at least so far as I've progressed (hell). But gems can absolutely be unsocketed from items from the jeweler (once you find him in Act II). Any gem can be removed from any item (regardless of the jeweler's level or the item's level), for a decently small fee. Hell level gems only cost about 1500 gold to unsocket (which is nothing, even to Act I Normal folks).

The jeweler is also responsible for combining gems to make more powerful gems. This also comes at a price, but a much steeper price than the unsocketing. But, it also makes more sense. Since gems aren't bind on equip, nor are they permanently stuck in an item anymore. I've given some super nice gems to my low level twinks (gems have no level requirement).

Yeah I think the best ruby gives like +35% exp when put in a helm slot so it's amazing for leveling new characters.

I have a 50 monk.

I have used DW and 2H both, and I prefer DW.

Obviously, there are more chances for stacking stats and sockets with two weapons vs. one. Also, dual wielding typically means you are using faster weapons. This is nice if you have any on-hit effects like health per hit, etc.

This is not to say 2H are rubbish...if your 2H is a lot better than any combo of 1H's available to you, then go for it. I just prefer the DW set-up.
