The Glade 4.0

I'm not very learned on these things. I have a 5.1 setup right now. I have 3 HDMI sources right now but they all go directly to the TV with the sound going into the receiver I currently have. I'd like to be able to change everything from the receiver rather than switching it at the TV and the receiver. I think my speakers are rated for 100W, but I'm not exactly sure. I'd prefer not to pay about $250 if possible.

I've been quite pleased with my Onkyo. It was beyond your price range, but it was a package deal with speakers, so I don't know off the top of my head how their standalones stack up for cost. It's a solid brand, though.

I too use an Onkyo, although it's a slightly older model and doesn't have HDMI switching built into it.

Mine is an 800 series and I love it (I ugpraded from a 600 a couple of years ago).

It looks like the TX-SR507 has some HDMI ports on it, and might be in your price range..

Plastic grocery bags that have been packed with seven day sun-dried cottage cheese typically don't do much receiving so much as they exist around an area where a penis might be.

Screeling: Don't buy a reciever. Surround sound sucks, go try to dig up and old Hercules/Turtle Beach Montego A3D card, slap it in a computer and use some warez pirated software as the processor.

Haha ... but seriously Onkyo is pretty solid stuff. I think they have the best sounding processors and their features are top notch. Solid units.

Very happy with my Onkyo 600 series. Just got to get off my rear and set up the zones for the patio and master bedroom.

I too have an Onkyo. Love it long time. I would absolutely 100% avoid Sony receivers at all cost. Their tvs are great. Receivers suck.

At $250 most any of the main name brands will produce an adequate result.

It's going to be mostly about reliability and features at that point. Sound quality will be largely indestinquishable provided you keep with decent quality brands. Above and beyond that, the real weak link in sound reproduction is usually the speakers.

the receiver is the "heart" of your system....picture any athlete with a bad ticker.....they're not going to be performing at optimum levels....

while it is true you need descent speakers in any system...the receiver is the single most important part of your system.

In the price range you're looking in, go with the Onkyo, you'll be very happy.

I have to disagree with you here. While it's obviously preferable to have high quality components all around, you will typically get better (more accurate) sound reproduction by spending 250$ on a receiver and $750 dollars on speakers than you would by spending $750 on your receiver and $250 on your speakers (of course, this is dependent on what you're getting. If you're buying crap, you're going to get crap sound regardless). While your analogy is apt, also think of it in that same athlete spent 500 dollars on his jersey, but only 10 dollars on his shoes, he also wouldn't be performing at his optimum level.

One last note, it is typically much more cost effective in the long run to spend the bulk of your money on good speakers. While I have probably gone through 4-5 receivers in the last 10 years due to changing technology, speaker tech has changed very little, and the good quality speakers I bought 10 years ago still sound great.

Well hey, I found this and it gets really good reviews on Amazon and this price seems hella cheap. Can anybody look this over to make sure there isn't something obvious I'm missing on why its so cheap (like its broken or whatever):

So I ended up buying this. So far I have zero complaints. Setup was easy, although I wish they gave you some banana plugs for the speaker wires. My previous receiver said it was 5.0, but I rarely got sound out of the rear channels. We played the first Lord of the Rings movie and I can't believe how much ambient noise was coming out of the rear channels. I know the novelty will wear off after a while, but for now its pretty cool.
