Want something even faster than Google Public DNS? Run your own caching DNS resolver on your local network ~20ms down to 1ms
I have a local dns. It works great, except the time I had to power down the server because I had to move it, and nobody could use the internet in the house until I powered it back up. There was also the time the power went out for a minute, and my Linux box decided it needed to recheck its 1.5TB disk. It took half an hour for the box to boot, and again, nobody could resolve IP addresses during the downtime.
I have since moved the DHCP/DNS functions to a separate server that doesn't take a long time to boot.
