While I agree with the overall message and have said things along the same lines before... this guy seems a bit angry. :p He is also wavering on the borderline of hypocrisy with all those "they"'s but perhaps I'll give him the benefit of the doubt!

Why should I listen to what a monkey produced?

Wow nice reference to the FSM.

I wouldn't say he is angry per se.

He is cynical, a little angry, and mostly, wrong. Putting his turn on things makes for, as Midgen said, a cute video. It looks like the lead in to a movie, perhaps a sex farce.

But no, he oversimplifies to the point of absurdity.

Someone trying to explain his belief that nothing we do is important or matters in any way, because we are all just a bunch of monkeys on a small planet orbiting around a relatively small sun in the middle of one damn huge universe.

Having realized that he is insignificant, he is trying to make everyone else feel the same way.

Why is it when people say things like this in a perfectly rational, calm tone of voice, the first reaction from those that disagree with them is to call them "angry"?

Of course our common descendant is an ape, not the monkey. I have therefore invalidated his entire video. Move along. Nothing to see here.

In all seriousness, it's an incredibly simplistic (and nihilistic) look at the world. It takes hubris to believe that because we can't see or understand something that it doesn't exist. All we can accept is the possibility it may or may not exist.

Great video, and predictable responses from the posters here. With the possible exception of Farsky, I would have thought he'd get it.

You can be angry with a calm tone of voice. The relentless use of hyperbole, for one. It just comes across as a sort of passive aggressive, very intentional use of words.

This fellow better realize that he, too, is a monkey, and that he's not going to register a blip in the history of monkeys. Nietzsche ranks higher on the rankings of importance, despite being a monkey as well. As T Rex put it so eloquently, Plato may once have said "I'm hungry guys, frig!", but going all argument ad nauseum with the monkey thing doesn't make Plato any less influential.

If it's just based in pure nihilism that nothing those two or anyone else does matters, because we're all doing to die some day regardless, is pretty pointless an argument and not one I think many people here really support. I'm pretty sure you don't. Whether an individual works to brighten a few others' lives, or gives millions of people throughout history something to discuss and think about, that is influence that anyone outside of a nihilist counts for something.

The only thing I like about his message is that humanity can stand to be brought down a notch. We are the supreme species on this planet by an order of magnitude, but separating things into "humans" vs "everything else" is pretty arrogant. Dogs have emotions, social rules, communication... so when you bring an earthworm into the discussion, it's far more apt to group the dogs in with us than it would be to group them with the earthworm. Maybe you can also pull the point that all those Nietzsches and Platos were just normal humans, too... maybe. But the video is a lot more than these points and there's a bit of anger there. And if I don't give him the benefit of the doubt, it also seems the guy thinks he's some sort of enlightened giver of wisdom, instead of just another of the billions of monkeys.

Something about anti-religious pablum comes to mind. Consequently, I think it's time for a little lesson faith.

It takes faith of the most egregious kind to disavow and deny the existence of a god, gods, or any other pantheon. You must assume and take as truth that the possibility of an unknown entity or entities is indeed fact without any evidence or exigent reality to substantiate your claim. In your own personal need to justify existence, you have chosen the least likely of currently debated probabilities as fact and rational without considering that it takes a great leap of faith and poorer logic to say, "I know there are no gods," than it does to say, "I believe in a God for these reasons."

So, while the video is ranting so eloquently about the monkeys on this planet inventing their gods, he kindly forgets that he's inventing his own deus ex machina just as you have. Amusingly enough, your both wrong on one very important matter: atheism has proven far more murderous than religion could have ever aspire to. And the next time you decide it behooves you to buy into a little screed, fact check your history first: atheism and secular regents waged far more wars and claimed far more lives than the religions you like to blame for all the ills in the world.

And if you truly value rationality, then the answer is ...

I don't know.

You assume things in my post that aren't there. There is no anti-religious sentiment in my post. And while there is a little bit of anti-religious sentiment in the video, it's a very minor part of the overall point.

It's actually a very major part of the overall point. Most religions are very clear in the uniqueness of humans; for the Abrahamic religions, Man is "made in His image." In fact, of the major world religions, only Hinduism really doesn't include this, and even there, humans are the top of the ladder to salvation. And this uniqueness is a foundational tenet in all of them.

So a video asserting that we're all just monkeys, and really insignificant is a pretty clear and open jab at religion, Aizle.

Oh, I understand it, and I have no religious qualms with the 'monkey' part, which I feel is probably the driving purpose of the video. I'm Christian, but I believe in evolution.

Rather, my problem stems from this:
Ienan wrote:

I don't like nihilism. I am, if such things exist, a micro-pessimist (i.e. a pessimist on an individual level) and a macro-optimist (an optimist on a global level). I find great joy and elation in the ability of humanity to accomplish the impossible. Part of this stems from my faith; while I don't believe we have His power, part of the whole "made in His image" thing includes our incredible capacity to mirror God's creativity, His ingenuity, His compassion, and all of the other wonderful parts of humanity that sentiments such as expressed in the video don't share. It's not the video's perceived origin (or lack thereof, I suppose) of these things that offends me, it's the willful ignorance of these positives that does so.

It's easy to make the case that humanity is just a waste of space, that nothing we do matters, when you've created an arena wherein you refuse to believe such things exist. To me, it's a dishonest argument, thus adding no value to the discussion, and that's why I feel the video was a waste of my time.

I don't understand why nihilism and optimism must be diametrically opposed. There's nothing wrong with being insignificant or powerless. Nor struggling in vain despite such knowledge. Isn't that when humanity is the most beautifuL?

In short, it's Neo answering the Agent Smith clone currupted from the orcale at the end of the etrilogy when she asks hi, why he persists in vain and for reasosn that are completely without meaning or purpose:

Because we choose to .
