I put this in Hellfire so we can keep my other thread free of debate/unruliness.

People in Zambia seem more open to discussions of faith. People want scripture books and if we had more full bibles to pass out we could have. We gave three pocket English new testaments away at Victoria Falls in about ten minutes. We emptied a large sheaf 30 to 50 of smaller native language booklets in market a couple days later while our host was buying meal and cabbage.

We met with one of the great tribal chiefs in his "palace." Most of you that own a home probably have larger dwellings but it's downright huge and opulent by local standards and is stone and steel instead of grass and clay. Before you get the wrong idea he wore western clothes like everyone else in his country save these were likely not second hand. His main concerns: that we would pray for his protection from assassination and we would "tell people not to have extra-martial sex as it Leads to the transmission of HIV. We were also able to pledge a bore hole (well). As proof that corruption knows no national boarders, the chief's advance man later suggested that I gift him my mini flash light. I felt good tribal relations were worth the few bucks. On a lighter note he also had no qualms asking our poor young female nurse openly about frequent nighttime urination.

We got to talk to students in schools and hand out scripture booklets and even present teachers and administrators with placards of (*gasp*) the ten commandments. We also taught the children how to remember them on their fingers.

No one seemed to think we were imposing on their views no matter what we did. Or if they did they didn't tell us. No one was pressured bullied or inconvenienced by our expression. As far as I know any other faith group could be given a fair shake if they laid the groundwork to do such. I think that's what makes it equal and free but you are equally free to disagree.

Speaking of corruption in Africa, my brother in law is setting up an orphanage in Ethiopia, and was trying to get a meeting with the President of Ethiopia to discuss the major corruption issues they were running into (everyone wanting a cut). The person they talked to said he could get them a meeting with the President... for a price.

They told him no, and ended up getting a meeting without bribing someone.

The flashlight is taken care of. The official saw it, wanted it for himself and I have several more here. Cost of doing business. I may pm you on the bore hole though.

So since this is in Hellfire, I'm curious what the actual root purpose of your trip was.

Azile, We have a missionary our church supports on the field and we went to see and assist him. His primary focus is Gospel preaching and the starting of local churches, mainly in the bush villages. He's raised up locals to assist him either as circuit preachers or pastors of local churches. Everything he does ties back to evangelism and the support of local Christians.

We spent most of our time visiting these churches, teaching their local leaders, members and/or children as well as letting them know Christians in America pray for and care about them. Most of the places representatives from several churches were in attendance with some people to travel as far as 7-10 miles so we did in some cases buy food so the hosting church could provide a meal for their guests and members.

Additionally since we have open doors through these churches and assemblies, we were able to visit local public schools and share the same kind of information we shared in the churches with students there. While English is the official language most of our work is done with an interpreter who speaks both English and Tonga well, usually one of the native pastors or circuit preachers

Leshani, I'm not sure the best method. I'll have to do some looking and get back to you.

I envy you, Rori. Tell more stories, please? I'd love to hear more. I'd like to go one day...I have plans on getting through nursing school first and might do a few mission trips to South America where my spanish would come in handy as well.
Do you have a blog? If you do, I'd like to read it.
Also, if there is anything I can do to help, let me know....how long will you be there?

What kaffis said. We got back on Friday and I started posting stuff. I was looking at a Flickr account for my pictures. I haven't figured that all out yet.

You can read my Pastor's account of the trip at http://www.bluelick.org and clicking on the Pastor's Blog link.

I spoke at church this evening (along with the rest of the team) and that should be available in the site's Audio in a couple of days also.
