The downside is that you have to deal with Jedi's who say "n00b" and "rofl." But the upsides outweigh the downsides, in my opinion.

If by tons of different classes you mean Jedi or Sith, then I agree with you. Mostly.

I think this game, like most MMO's will be fantastic if you have a group of people you know and like to play with you regularly.

I'm imagining a PUG where you're counting on the guy you dont know to make choices that impact your gameplay. Not sure how that will work. Also the cut scenes and voice over is very cool in principle, but then I think "geez I cant even play WoW if I dont have that 'fast quest text' option enabled" because I click quests and accept without reading them all the time. Maybe this game will change that though.

As far as classes, the Sith/Jedi is far and away the most engaging class to me. Overall I'm glad to see they are trying new approaches and I hope they succeed in making a great game.

Bioware is onto something with the game design, but it won't work in a Massively Multiplayer Environment. You need much smaller player groups to work through the huge environment. If the game is truly roleplay driven from a mechanical aspect, then you can't afford to deal with the choices of uncontrolled entities.

5 to 50? Heh.

Massively single player online

Barely multiplayer online
Diminutively multiplayer online
Slightly multiplayer online
Somewhat multiplayer online
Meagerly multiplayer online (I like this one, but sadly no hits :()

In the end it is going to depend on how they work it. Am I going to get bad karma or 'darkside points' for being in a party with someone who is going that way? I play most mmo's as single player games anyway.

Well, I'm fairly certain light side and dark side won't be allowed to group together. And the choices we have to make...probably won't be a light side versus a dark side choice. It will likely be two different light side(for republic characters, dark side for sith characters) choices that each have consequences. In very simple terms.

I finally got myself signed up for beta, at least I hope so. It says "Congratulations!" in the Game testing signup page, so everything should be fine....

Interesting...so, two jedi classes and two non-jedi classes for each side.

Bleah. I'd rather have seen them as spec trees of one Jedi/Sith class.

Jedi Consular on the actual web site. I'll be playing a Consular for sure.

I *really* hope this isn't faction locked like WoW.

:(

I have a serious feeling that's setting yourself up for disappointment.

What does faction locked mean? (no WoW experience to put this into context).

Probably.

Faction Locked means that players cannot interact with the other faction in any way other than killing them. No chatting, no grouping, nothing. It really sucks for people that want to play with their friends, but don't want to be good/evil. I can kinda dig that a jedi might not group with a sith, but why wouldn't a smuggler play with a sith? Why wouldn't a trooper?

In the context of an RPG, locked factions serve only to annoy people.

Gotcha. I'm not sure if they've laid that out yet for the public or not. I would expect them to make it locked, but would not be shocked if they didn't in order to keep things a little more open to the player base. The trouble with allowing open grouping is how much they have been touting the "story-driven" aspect of the game.

By the way, I'm not in disagreement with your take, I'm more speculating what I think Bioware will do.

Because the smugglers and troopers you play as are affiliated with the Republic. I agree that bountyhunter/trooper/smuggler/Imperial Agent(Could have been renamed Spy) should have been neutral in which side they choose, leaving Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular on Republic, with Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor for the Sith Empire. But they didn't. It doesn't bother me too much, certainly not enough for me to consider not playing.

Raltar, I think Raber hit on it -- the story driven aspects make neutral classes require twice as much work, essentially. You also, then, have to differentiate them more; this way, smugglers and imperial agents (or whatever the pairing would be) don't have to sweat treading on each others' feet to both be stealthy classes.

Story-wise, the released info clearly indicates that smugglers favor the Republic in the conflict because they enjoy a degree of leniency (in that only the planetary level governments involve themselves, not the Republic itself) in their operations that the Sith Empire would not afford them. And bounty hunting is frowned upon in Old Republic days as barbaric, I'm sure. Troopers cannot be neutral because they are *Republic* troopers, etc. The Sith Empire doesn't seem to have a standing army of non-Force users, hence the reliance on mercenaries to fill the gaps in their admittedly large fighting force of Force users.

As to locked factions; pardon me, my low exposure to WoW made me misinterpret the term slightly. There may be some interaction permitted (communication, perhaps, and potentially faction-blind auction houses), but no grouping nor changing sides, is my guess.

I know all of that. I'm just saying it would have been nice the other way around. Since my brother really wants to play a Bounty Hunter, but there's no way in hell I'm playing Sith.

This.

There's no reason a BH shouldn't be able to group with a Sith. Or a Jedi RPing as a spy for the sith. Its an RPG, anything can be justified :)
