I always swore I would never get a tattoo because I change my mind too much, and I never really had a strong desire to get one anyway. I always thought if you inked your body permanently, you should have a really important reason for doing so and I never did. Until now.

Now I have a strong desire to get a tattoo....I want to (remember? comemmorate? honor?) my son.

I was thinking something in between my shoulder blades that says "Sweet Baby James" with an angel wing on each side and a halo over it. But not too big.

I've never seriously contemplated getting a tattoo until now.
Any advice, suggestions, tips, etc?

Sounds like a beautiful tribute.

I say do it if you are willing.

Tribute.
That's the word. Thanks, Foamy.

Yes, I am going to do it, but I need to make some decisions first about the exact size, the font, etc.

I never thought I would get a tattoo...I am actually really looking forward to it. I just feel like this is something I need to do for myself.

Draw it up on a piece of paper, or go to a parlor and ask a tattoo artist to draw it up for you. Expect to pay them something. Carry it with you every day for around a year. Look at it every day and see if it still looks good to you. If it still feels like a good idea after that year - and you still want to do it - and Nitefox is okay with it, go ahead.

If it is on your back, NiteFox is mostly going to be the only one looking at it, unless you keep your hair up and wear something low in the back. You won't be looking at it except with the help of mirrors or cameras. Because of that I suggest giving him a say in the matter.

That is good advice, Micheal.
A tattoo is not something I intend to take lightly, or something I would do without discussing it with my husband first.

And the location...what you said is exactly why I want it there. If I want it seen, I can put my hair up and wear a low-cut in the back shirt or dress and if I don't want anyone to see it it's easily hidden.

A year sounds like a long time. I was thinking more like 3 months. I do intend to have more kids, and I don't think they allow pregnant people to get tattooed! ;-)

I dunno, between the shoulder blades was always a little too close to the tramp stamp for my taste.

Ouch! If you like pain I guess that would be a good place for your first one...

I think it's a terrific idea!

A couple of suggestions:

Do a google image search. It may give you ideas to lean toward or stay away from. It may give you a hint of the tattoo artist you want to use. It may affect your choice to know that someone famous has something similar (Nicole Ritchie).

Make going to a very reputable shop. Make sure the shop is clean, clean, clean.

Screeling, how is between the shoulder blades a tramp stamp? I thought a tramp stamp was on the lower back right above the butt?

Raell would it really hurt that bad there? there is muscle and stuff...I heard that places like ankles hurt the worst.

Vindi, I looked at Nicole Richie's wings. I am thinking something almost exactly like this, except with "Sweet Baby James" filling the inside of the heart. I will keep looking though, while I am thinking, but this was the image that first came to my mind:

Anywhere close to bone is painful from the folks I've known who've done it. Seems to be more nerve endings near bone.

Shoulder blades, spine, and the major nerve clusters right below the neck. I'm sure you feel them everytime your sweetie rubs your shoulders.

Yes, its likely to be painful. How painful depends on the person and occasionally the artist. Remember, no drugs, no alcohol, not even aspirin, before you are tattooed.

On the shoulders is not a tramp stamp. Tramp stamp is specifically the one right around the belt line in back.

I know one young lady who paid a lot of money for a fancy tramp stamp. After her father noted how disappointed he was she would do such a thing, he then explained that the family's skin tends to eat tattoos, its a rare condition, but the system doesn't leave ink there. Explained that when he was in the Marines he had one put on his forearm. I've never seen it and I've known him for 20 years. Yes, some people's systems eat tattoos. Her's is almost gone, its been two years.

Spoilering my advice to conserve on space used up.

Spoiler:
Quote:
I've never seriously contemplated getting a tattoo until now.
Any advice, suggestions, tips, etc?

***disclaimer: This is all my opinion, I know other gladers have tattooes, Someone may or may not be more heavily inked than I am, but this advice comes from both me and a friend of mine who may need to hire a small albino if they want more skin to put ink on. Your Milage may vary.***

1. Regardless of what some people will tell you, they ALL hurt. Some just hurt more than others. The area you are contemplating is one of those areas that makes the baby jesus cry (IMO).

2. Go hunting for an artist. You can see if any of your local friends with tattooes recommend someone, but go look at their portfolio. Have the prospective artists draw a picture for you first. Make sure they understand the emotional importance of this piece to you.

3. While hunting, if an artist draws a picture that you are iffy about... do not hesitate to walk away and keep hunting. This will be on you forever; laser tattoo removal is expensive, painful and not garaunteed to completely remove the piece. If you "settle" for something now, you may regret it in the future.

4. Make sure the final drawn picture is EXACTLY what you are looking for. Allow for creative inspiration from the artist, but remember... it is your body, it is your permanent marking. You have the final yes or no on the artwork.

Now when it comes close to the actual day of tattooing, there are some additional guidelines I have had recommended to me.

1. Stay hydrated. Make sure you are not dehydrated at all. Your skin will accept the ink and heal better if it is properly hydrated.

2. Start taking Ferrous Sulfate Pills the ink tends to stay more colorful if you are not iron deficient. Take these even before you look for an artist. That way even if you don't get tattooed, you feel the effects of the vitamin. Do this in conjuntion with Seafood and Meat Step below.

3. Eat Seafood and Red meat. And by red meat I do not mean hamburger. Have a steak, this one is fairly important in the few days before getting a tattoo. It helps to ensure proper levels of nutrients in the skin to help keep the ink from fading too much during healing.

After Care:

There are many healing methods that people use for the after care of a tattoo. Here is how I have done it in the past; YMMV.

I dry heal. It seems to have the quickest heal times (on my body type) Here is my process... recommended by several very reputable artists in Vegas; and by one artist who compares in badass-iosity with Paul Booth:

The first night, once you get home (before bed) take off the wrap most artists put over a new tattoo. Wash it (gently). either let it air dry or use a very soft cloth and DAB dry, under no circumstances should you rub dry on this evening.

On the second day, I will just leave it be. You have a giant open wound on xxx body part, just leave it be. During shower time.. find a way to not let it get wet. This is the pattern I follow until it begins to flake.

When it starts to get flaky, wash it normally. A lot of the flaky will come off, that is good. That means it is getting closer to being healed and will begin to itch like a mofo. DO NOT SCRATCH!!! some people have been lucky and caused no damage to their tattooes by scratching when they itch, but other people have.

When it begins to get itchy go buy a bottle of alchohol free skin lotion (make sure, because if it has alchohol in it.. it will hurt). For the itching you can occassionally slap it gently to relieve the itching, but keep it to a bare minimum

After the flaky time it will begin to get scaly. DO not use the lotion unless it is absolutely neccessary. and only use a very light layer. This is just to keep the skin from cracking; not to moisturize your skin.

***cautions and things to avoid****

**avoid** Any tattoo artist who has no tattoes visible of his/her own

**avoid** Any tattoo 'artist' who prefers to do flash work and dislikes custom work.

**avoid** The Dutch

**caution** I do not know if your state requires tattoo studios to get regular health inspections, but Las Vegas does. Find out if your state requires this and if they do.. make sure you can see the studio's health certificate.

**caution** Pay attention and look for an autoclaver. It is what they put needles into to sterilze them before disposal.

**caution** Since this is your first piece.. being nervous is okay. You can even ask the artist to see the packaging he keeps unused needles in prior to use. Most artists will usually let you see it to help release any fears about health and safety.

**Caution** Swelling may occur, bleeding will occur. Open wound and all that. This is normal. But if after 3 to 4 days the swelling is getting worse, seek medical attention.

**Caution** Color "spotting" may occur. Invest in a cheap set of sheets to use for about a week or two that you will not be sad about potential ink stains.

**reminder** TIP!!! This artist just spent his/her time on you. Yes you are paying them for this time, but consider that he or she probably drew up a picture for you first. And this is something that will be with you forever. Tip accordingly. I personally overtip, and I know I do. Lisa spent $500 on my arm, and I tipped another $200. I got my shoulder done I spent $500 and I gave him a $200 tip. I spent $100 on my inverted cross and tipped $45.

**to look for** The artists I have gone to are not only tattoo artists; they also sculpt, paint and are into photography. I highly recommend this for everyone.

**caution** white ink...These colors are VERY difficult. White ink has the flaw that quite often it does not stay looking white. Natural skin pigmentation will cause white to take on other colors. Does your skin have a pink tint to it? So will your whites. Have a naturally Olive colored complextion... so will your whites.

**Caution** red ink... This color is a pain in the ***. It will heal differently from person to person, even on the same person from sitting to sitting. My inner wrist.. I have a symbol for hear no evil. The red ink on it looked like it was going to heal fine; and then some of it was rejected by my system, and some wasn't. Then on my shin.. I have a zombie splattered with blood and gore. The reds looked like they were going to do the same thing as my wrist, and ended up healing faster than any other part of my body.

**reminder** what Micheal said is wise. Some people just eat through tattooes like they were food coloring. It sucks, but it does happen.

In my advice I mentioned that you should have the artist draw up a sketch. If you do not like the sketch; do NOT settle. You would not settle for a house, and much like a house.. a tattoo is forever.

and to compliment what micheal said about pain being occassionally dependent on the artist... that is very true. Some artists are light handed, some.... not so much.

What an incredible idea to remember your baby. Six months ago I miscarried. I understand the pain you are going through. I saw the picture you posted previously, James was beautiful, I am so sorry for your loss.

I've been a long time lurker at the Glade, just found the new board recently.

darksiege, thank you for that. It gives me a better idea of what to expect and how to prepare. I also appreciate the advice on what to look for in an artist.
As far as coloring goes, I'm not quite certain that I want any colors at all. Everyone I've seen that has gotten color on their tattoos, it has faded and/or not looked quite right after a few months.
The picture I posted was the closest thing I could find to the image I already had in my mind.
I can see that this process is going to take awhile; I want to do it right, and I want this to be a healing/spiritual experience for me.

Kirra, thank you. I am sorry for your loss as well. I know you feel my pain, just like I feel yours. *hugs*
There is a site that has helped me, that may or may not help you as well....here is a link to our son's story with a message of hope at the end for all the mommy's and their sweet angel babies. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-ppstillborn&msg=18605.1&ctx=0

I'm glad you found us. Welcome back! (I'd bonk you, but I think its too close to "boink" hahaha!)

The area over your spine isn't the worst place to get tattooed. When I got mine done over my spine, that was actually the least painful part for me.

The inner edge of my shoulder blade, however, did hurt a bit.

That's correct. A lot of girls out here though started switching to between the shoulders once the tramp stamp started getting frowned on as trendy.

See, and that is a huge part of the reason I have never gotten a tattoo...I do not want to be part of a trend or a fad.

LK, it's not a tramp stamp, and while I too stay away from trendy "statements" out of the innate desire for not being viewed as one of "those people" - **** 'em if that's what they think. This is a personal choice you're making about an event that touched you deeply, and your desire to honor a memory. Anyone who knows you will know what it means to you. Anyone else, unless you want to make them feel completely worthless by explaining to them the reality of the choice you made - **** 'em.

Just a few things on these statements.....

Don't necessarily avoid artists that do not have any visible tattoos....my artist actually doesn't have any tattoos period. He's a very well known artist(been tattooing longer than Ive been alive 33+ yrs) and is also one of the most well known lawyers representing tattoo equipment companies, ink companies, etc...it's a good recommendation....but don't dismiss an artist just because of it.

With regard to the autoclave....you'll never see it in the shop...it's not accessable in most shops..it's usually in the back and some places don't even have one...they send their stuff out to be autoclaved. What you will want to do is make sure that they take everything out of a sealed autoclave bag. The bag changes color once it has been autoclaved so you can always tell if it's been done on the items.

With ragard to the cautions on the inks.....it all depends on the ink your artist uses. My artist (Damian Guerin) represents just about everyone important in the tattoo world including many ink companies so he gets his pick of the best inks.....anyway, the inks are the most important so find out about the quality of the inks the artist uses. According to Damian, the newest and best inks actually ARE food coloring. The tattoo I have has some of the most vivid colors you'll ever see and they've been that way since the day(s) I had my tattoo done. I actually get complete strangers stop me to take pictures of my tattoo and compliment me on the color and detail. I've been hundereds of miles from home and had people stop me and ask me if it's a Damian Guerin tattoo.

My tattoo is a tribute to my mother whom I lost to cancer a few years ago. In my opinion, tribute tattoos are the single best reason to get one. I can't stand people who get tattoos just to get tattoos. In my opinion, there should be a reason behind each tattoo...not just because it looks cool or whatever. I'd love to post mine, but I have no idea how to host a pic to do so.

You would be doing well to honor the memory of your child.

Sorry for your loss. :( I lost my mom to cancer this summer, so I feel you.

I like your views on tattoos...almost the exact same as mine. :)

As far as photos go, I link mine from my Facebook account. (Make sure your photo albums there are set to 'public' or the pic won't show up.) After you post your pic on fb, right click on it to get the .jpg link and then post it here.
I would love to see your tattoo.

I get the distinct feeling that NV has some funky regulations then. All of the places I have gone have their health department certificate highly visible, as well as their autoclave.

I thought some states required the use of new needles every single time? The rest of the stuff goes in the autoclave, but the needs aren't reused.
