What do we think about this?

To legitimately ask, why is the current(or past) goverment so against ID for voting? If you have to have ID to do so many other things, what logical reason is there for all the effort in trying to stop laws and rules from taking hold to make sure we have as legal a voting process as possible?

I found it hilarious the other day when in comparison to the sueing Holder is doing in FL and TX and other places to stop voter ID forces from doing their thing, but to get into one of Obama's gatherings...you needed photo ID...is Holder going to sue Obama for requiring folks to present ID to listen to him speak?

The argument made by the Left is that ID Card laws disenfranchise the poor and stupid. People who can't read can't complete forms to get an ID and the poor can't afford the ID and wouldn't qualify anyways due to a lack of documentation (permanent address, birth certificate, social security card, etc).

The real reason imho is so that the dead can continue to vote blue and the poor can be voted for by proxy in exchange for goods/services.

But if I'm not mistaken, a good number of those poor and stupid are on some kind of government assistance program...don't they need ID to become elegible? Or to cash checks? If any have checking accounts, don't you need ID to open one?

And this isn't just about the live voters either. Holder is trying to stop the state of FL from removing dead voters from it's rolls. The argument being made by the DOJ I believe is because FL didn't submit their request within X amount of days/time(I'm going off memory here). While I agree that in many cases, requirements should be met and stuck too...but in something like this should it really matter? If you know that these 7,389(made up number) folks are dead but still on the voter rolls, wouldn't it just be a common sense thing to say, yeah, we need to have them removed.

you're arguing for more gov't expenditures in the form of IDing?

Correct me if I'm wrong but last I looked at the vote fraud numbers for the US, they're nearly insignificant.

Known vote fraud is. If its good fraud - you don't know about it.

That being said my state's law allows people to get state issued ID at no cost for the purpose of voting.

I don't know this, I'm just assuming, but... Isn't Florida on the "you must get all changes to your voting procedures approved by the federal government because you have a history of discrimination" list? If so, then I get why the DOJ might say they didn't file early enough for it to be reviewed effectively. Why does it need to be reviewed? Depending on HOW you scrub your list for dead people, you might end up scrubbing off a lot of live people as well.

I don't know what they are proposing to do or how or if they are on the list, but this could be the explanation.

The usual argument is that, for instance, the forms of ID required by the Texas voter ID law all cost money to obtain one way or another, and thus might be considered a poll tax in violation of the 24th amendment.

Does Texas law provide an option for free state issued id's?

Yes, FarSkeee frequently mistakes it for a news show.

Yes and no. The permitted IDs are:

  1. Driver's License
  2. Military ID
  3. Passport
  4. Concealed Carry License
  5. Special Voter ID
Only #5 and #2 are issued at no cost, but obviously not everyone can get a military ID in the first place. Although the special voter ID is technically issued at no cost, you have to provide an official copy of your birth certificate, which does cost some kind of fee to obtain. That's also applies on top of the usual driver's license issuance fee, since this is just about the only form of ID that Texas will accept to obtain a new driver's license. One you have the driver's license, you can renew it (even if expired for a short time) with nothing more than your old license.

There may be some other form of ID accepted for the special voter ID if you are naturalized citizen born elsewhere; I'm not really sure.

Yes, I did. My comment wasn't intended to be specific to the video you linked. ;)

A birth certificate is only not free to obtain if you need extra copies. The initial one you get when you're born is free. (Having just had a baby in Texas, I can attest to this.)

People need ID for all kinda of things, I see no problem with requiring it for voting.

I kind of prefer that people who vote can prove they have the right to do so.
