Thanks for the link but not so much, no. Having used an iPad 2 extensively and now the Kindle Fire I can't figure out his opinion that the iPad is faster. I found the iPad tediously slow and the blown-up interface of an iPhone to be ugh. Which brings me to the question I was really hoping to get answered...

The Fire UI is utter trash and it looks like it, can I root this mofo and swap it out for another Android iteration that supports widgets and doesn't feature a gray book shelf as the background?

If you want to root it anyways, get the Nook tablet. It's more powerful for a pretty modest increase in price.

Yes, you can root it. I'm pretty sure it'll run CyanogenMod 7. They're working on 9 atm.

You could have just asked that in the first post BTW :p

I figured no sense asking if no one had one. I don't see the Fire on the Cyanogen website. Is there another I could check out?

Bump. I have one now. It's running CM9, Energy ROM. F-ing awesome.

My only real complaint is how long it takes to charge.

Edit - Farskee's review doesn't mention what every real* owner of an Android device does! Rooting is part of the fun, man.

ICS >> iOS any day of the week.

Noooo way I'd root my Fire. I don't want the standard ugly-ass Android UI on there. Blech.

Not that I use my Fire anymore, especially since the iPad 3 came out. The only advantage the Fire had for me over the iPad was the increased DPI providing a sharper image for text, but the iPad 3's Retina Display blows that away, so...yeah. I want to sell it, actually, but they don't exactly hold their value. :(

I have not. I've used Gingerbread and Honeycomb. Neither has impressed me in the least, from the standpoints of functionality, performance, or design. Honestly, Android has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I really have no desire to revisit it anytime soon.

I'm not trying to make this into a "herp derp Android sucks, this I declare by fiat" argument...it's just that I've tried it, multiple flavors on multiple devices, phone and tablets...and it's very clearly not for me. I can't find any usefulness that exceeds (or even matches) that of the iOS ecosystem, and I do not like the aesthetics at all. In fact, I think they roundly stink.

I'm very impressed by what I'm seeing of the new Windows phones and Metro as a whole, but while the aesthetics are very pleasing, the functionality seems to be very, very limited right now.

I'm really trying not to exaggerate, but the experimental gesture controls on the ICS browser might be one of the best touch controls I've ever used.

Speaking of keeping the Nexus 7 thread on track, I thought I'd necropost to this one ;)

So after a poking by Lenas to revisit the rooting/romming of my Fire, I have Jellybean loaded on it after I had to return the whole thing to the Amazon Version of Android because the OTA update to 6.3(?) screwed up my previous attempt.

Its a far more useful piece of hardware now. I find myself picking it up instead of my phone for little things like texts and messaging.

Its fast, smooth, and responsive now. Its the device I wanted it to be when I bought it.

Glad my prodding resulted in something good!

I haven't gotten around to putting JB on mine yet because I'm lazy... Maybe tonight. Maybe not. We'll see!
