I'm a little surprised to see that many ponytails. I'd have thought short hairstyles would be more preferable for runners.

Kirra - it's a Vimeo video clip, not sure if that's a problem for your phone. Try this Youtube version:

Same footage, but without the peppy music :)

Not really. Few women are willing to cut their hair too short. If it's not a boy cut, it's in your face. Longer lets you tie it back out of the way.

I've always been surprised by that too, at least when we're talking world-class competitions. In short sprints, where 1/100 of a second matters, many male runners go so far as to shave their legs to reduce wind resistance, so you'd think the women would at least go with super short hair styles.

I know they do in swimming, but I'm not certain they would do it in running.

Alternately, there could be some sort of vortex effect from having that pony tail.

None of the races I have been in use moves like that to warm up :) of course I'm in the low amateur races.

But, I'm really curious to see in my next race if it catches on! I will let you all know lol

Its almost like she's nervous/anxious. Which, is understandable. But its almost the same motion every time.

hands on hips swivel swivel bounce bounce cross arms in front and wiggle fingers.

Perhaps the sexiest nervous tic I've ever seen ;)

I'm going with nerves and excitement.

But not at all unpleasant to watch.

I'm guessing there's a bit more to it. She does hurtles, which requires you to swing your leg up quickly. She's probably stretching out her hips. When I raced, I'd watch folks getting read for the hurtles do side lunges back and forth for the same reason.

Correct, I ran hurdles in high school, and you need a lot of hip flexibility to do well at them.

Its probably the same consideration for cyclists, which has nothing to do "wind resistance", but protection against road rash.

If you fall on pavement like that with body hair it doesn't just scrape your skin, it pulls the hair by the roots, causing a lot more damage, increasing the time to heal/scarring as well as the chance for infection.

Yeah, wind resistance is a pretty funny notion at even sprinting speeds.

Not as outlandish as you may think:

The effect of athletic clothing aerodynamics upon running speed.

Abstract

Wind tunnel tests of clothing materials, hair, and shoes show that it is possible to lower the wind resistance of a runner from about 0.5% to over 6% by improved aerodynamics....By lowering the wind resistance of a runner 2%, the models predict time savings from 0.01 s in the 100-m dash to 5.7 s in the marathon. This is the equivalent of lead distances of about 0.1 to 31 m....The results show that it is possible to lower the wind resistance significantly by improving clothing or by trimming or covering the hair, and that a small aerodynamic drag reduction can result in a significant performance increase.

The abstract doesn't mention body hair, and I don't have access to read the full article, but it's not inconceivable to me that shaving could have at least some impact, particularly when sprint times are now being measured in thousandths of a second (though typically only reported/recorded in hundredths). Certainly those female sprinters should be able to improve their times with a quick snip of the pony tails!

Er... did I read that correctly where it stated you could shave 5.7 seconds on a marathon?
