Thanks for answering so civilly I take your point on practical siege tactics. What is the rationale for the mags? Easier prep for long days on the range, or just better safe than sorry, or... ?

I haven't shot since cadets so I don't really know domestic gun ownership

With 15 or 20 magazines I could go a whole day at the range without reloading... If I didn't live in shooter's hell (Maryland) I'd probably be looking to pick up a bunch myself.

The question has a fundamental problem in that it assumes "need" is even relevant. A gun is an item with all sorts of legitimate applications for law-abiding adults and a magazine is just a component of it.

I didn't know you were in Maryland. I've had some of my best shooting experiences in Maryland. My cousin lives there and both he and his wife are enthusiasts, and in Bowie, MD (just outside of DC) there is one of the nicest outdoor ranges I've ever been to. Right off of a bike trail and in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Less reload time at the range, allows me to keep a loadout on my gear at home, and at other locations, I've got spares in case of mechanical failure etc. I figure once I pick up another AR it's one less thing to buy.

What's a loadout? ;-p

Different rounds or round ordering (not sure if this is common outside of shotguns) in a magazine.

Basically, yes.

So for a handgun that you regularly use for self defense, you'll have a couple magazines that are loaded with your "I mean it" rounds. Expensive, high quality stopping rounds. Then you may have several loaded with your "plinking" rounds for practice at the range. Etc.

And though keeping spare magazines isn't usually applicable to shotguns, you'd hear people talking about loadouts for them, too, like buck/buck/slug in the tube for home defense.

I might have to look into that. The only decent outdoor range I've heard of around here is in. Frederick, and has so many rules it isn't much fun...

I'm pretty close to Bowie (only reason I didn't buy a house there is because Howard County has insane property taxes).

As I was using it, the gear id toss on before goingin the field. So at least 210 rounds + other gear.

The context I've heard "loadout" to mean is all tactical equipment based on what function the unit is performing. So weapons, armor, load bearing equipment, comm array, optics, medkit on and on could be potential part of loadout.

"Load" or how you're "loaded" would be specific to the cartridge being fired and what the user's requirements are.

For 99% of civ AR users (and any other 5.56x45mm platform) this is 55gr FMJ. A defensive mag with 62gr or 68gr expanding ammunition would be ideal but I'd hesitate to shoot a rifle indoors unless absolutely forced to.

I find vmax 55gr varmint rounds or 62gr fmjs work best in my AR. Tried HP rounds and they are too wonky.
