The Glade 4.0

Microsoft's attempt at a gmail like service. It's a conversion from the old hotmail and live mail services, which I never cared for.

I've played around with it a little. I like the UI, but I really haven't used it enough to know if there are any obvious omissions. The "Quick Views" are nice though.

I'm not thrilled about the idea of migrating from the gmail account I've been using for several years now (the one associated with my android hardware), but with Win8 and the new phones and tablets coming out in October, it''ll be nice having a native email environment. Presumably i'll still be able to run a gmail app there.

I wish they had added some new domains. No good account names left on either hotmail or live.com these days.

Migration isn't very hard since you can use Outlook.com to load your Gmail or any other email accounts you want. I've been playing around with it some today and I like the aesthetic, may start using it over Gmail when I need to write a web-based email. I'm fully expecting Microsoft to tie this into Windows 8 completely, considering they are using the exact same Mail, People, Calendar and Skydrive icons from Win8 builds and the functionality mirrors that of IE10 (bar coming down from the top for the "tab" view).

You can also sign up for a new @outlook.com address. I just grabbed a couple to use for junk accounts, and was able to get my real name and first initial and last name, which is usually impossible to grab.

Hmm.. It seems since I started play around with it this morning, they have started registering new users under user@outlook.com. This morning, i was given a choice to use hotmail.com or live.com.

I just registered 'midgen[at]outlook.com' and a couple of other box names based on my real name as well.

Haven't gotten to play around with it much, but I was able to get copies of all my usual e-mail addresses for the future.

Wish the interface was a little more like Exchange, which is what I was hoping for, but so far I like it more than gmail.

The migration I was referring to was more the socialization of a new email address, not the technical process.

Gotcha. I did get myself an @outlook.com email, but I don't think I'm going to tell anyone. They can just keep using any of my other emails

I haven't looked at this, but my company has a nearly full fledged version of outlook that runs in a browser. Is that what is powering this?

No, it's not OWA. Although I suspect with the release of Win8 they will be very similar, at least esthetically.

This is the web portal for the email that will eventually be integrated into your mobile devices (Windows Tablets, and Smartphones).

Think of it as Microsoft's version of Googles Gmail.

Interesting ... I navigate to Outlook.com and it welcomes me by name.

It's using my already-established Windows Live account, for which I registered using my Gmail address, and I got the following message when I clicked the link to update my email address:

It did the same for me the first time Shel. It used a chached credential from my technet login.

I promptly logged off and proceeded to create a new account which will be used specifically for my mail/mobile stuff once the phones and tablets come out later this fall.

I created an Outlook.com alias to reserve the address, but am not going to use it as my primary Live account name until either I purchase a new phone or MS makes improvements to the transitioning experience.

Shel, you can use other email addresses, you just can't rename your Live account main email. I wanted to switch my XBL account from Cox to Gmail but couldn't because I've got a windows phone as well.

Edit - not that it's a very big deal IMO. I've factory reset my phone like 4 times and each time I've been back up and running in 10 minutes.

I think the aesthetic is pretty nice (far better than their old Hotmail look, blech), but it doesn't best Google's to me (though frankly, I rarely use web interfaces...Sparrow on my iMac, rMBP, and iPhone + Mail on my iPad [THANKS FOR NOTHING, GOOGLE] are my preferences. Still, when I do require a web interface, I prefer Google's.
