There are quite a few in Sholazar Basin for either the Oracles or Frenzyheart. You can even unlock the dailies in Icecrown and Storm Peaks. 77 means you can basically survive any zone now and do quests.

Just did the first 3 today! GF gave me money to get epic flying as well. Today has been productive.

So...I seem to really suck at this whole jousting business. Protips?

My jousting technique when I was first starting:
1) Stay next to the opponent until he starts walking away.
2) When he starts moving out to charge you, start spamming the charge button. You'll get the charge off before he has a chance to turn around.
3) After you hit him, turn as tightly as you can to get back next to him.
4) Repeat until dead.

As I got more confident, I started adding a lance throw while I was circling around after the charge.

Later on after that, I started adding a strafe to the side until the throw button lit up, then throwing the lance and strafing back close so he couldn't retaliate in time.

I definitely recommend the shield breaker as you circle.

With that routine, I can get through all 4 champs in 5 minutes without having to heal my horsie in between. They never do anything but Thrust you, when you have full shields, and you consistently hit them for 3k+.

When you charge them, hit him with melee too. They are on seperate CD timers. You can land both shots at same time. I've found melee is the bulk of damage when solo; shield breaker and charge just set them up by removing shield layers.

Although, depending on the positioning, charge may outdamage melee.

10 Always Make Sure You Have 3 Shields!
20 Get close and mash 1 until they walk off.
30 When they walk off, wait, then mash 3.
40 After you hit them, wheel around and mash 2.
50 GOTO 10

Thanks guys! Much easier to complete those dailies now. Also, made 80 recently and have been doing some regular ToC and a few Heroic instances.

I grouped with a lvl 80 mage that was doing 782 dps on an easy heroic OK run. Just wanted to throw that out there.

So is there any program out there that lets you know how much DPS you should be putting out based on your class and current gear? Is the DPS on RAWR supposed to indicate what numbers you should be hitting on boss fights?

I got some nice upgrades recently but want to know what I should be hitting so I can tell if I'm being effective or if I need to work on something.

Simcraft is another program you can use to see what your dps should be at.

Rawr is *close* to what you're capable of. Generally speaking though, its only accurate for raids on patchwerk style fights.

782... for a mage? That seems low. Mages are near the top of the charts DPSwise.

Ran you through simcraft real fast:
With raid buffs @ max, and on a patchwerk fight that's 500 seconds long, it says your theoretical max DPS is 6820.

Yeah it was very low. I was doing 4000ish dps and he did 782. I'm fairly sure he wasnt afk either. Most mages do a ton of damage which is why it stood out to me.

Anyway thanks for that, 6820 is a lot heh. I was hovering around 4200ish before some of these upgrades so we'll see tonight how it goes.

He was pretty much AFK, or in greens (and that's still kinda low for greens), or possibly just terribly lazy. There was a mage in one of my previous raids that was just lazy as hell, he constantly came in at around 2k but was very geared. Pretty much a boat anchor. <shrug>

Remember though, that's a theoretical max with everything turned "on", and you just standing there on the mob dpsing. Movement, lack of a buff or two, no flasks, no food, etc will all affect that negatively.

I think I auto attack for like 1500... I don't have any idea how a mage could do sub1k dps.

Your raid around you has a very large effect on your dps. It's been my experience that comparing dps numbers, from a sim or another person in another guild, is extremely difficult to do.

I remember Khross talking about raid members doing 7k dps on Patchwerk awhile back. I was sitting there trying to figure out how, as our very good dps, people I know are good and well-researched, were doing 5k max. The main difference was all the other dps in the raid. Our top dps weren't doing anything wrong that frantic further research could improve their dps by 40%. It took my guild a very, very long time to get the 3 minute Patchwerk kill achievement. :p

Same thing in EQ2. I really have come to hate DPS parsing. Just having a Dirge in the group with me can change my DPS by 30-40%.

I try to benchmark myself off the other MDPS classes in the raid. Particularly the one Ret Pally who I see hitting 6k-7k+ regularly, while I hovered sub 4k, but he has significantly better gear than I do.

That and he knows the fights much better than I do. This will be my 3rd ToC raid, and 2nd as a 25 man tonight. I'm much more comfortable with them now than I was my first go around though. The twins being the only weird one really.

Exactly. Those players that are hitting 7k+ dps are doing it because not only are their individual toons min/maxed, but the raid itself is min/maxed. Not only with the basic class/spec layouts but also to the point of individual talent trees. i.e. the Frost DK's don't put points into Improved Icy Touch, because they have an Enhance Shaman, etc.

You can easily see a 2-3k swing in dps by doing that.

7k DPS is easy. 10k is where it's at.

DPS is a fairly simple math equation.

(Player Competence)^2 + Gear = DPS

There's even more to it than that. In my example from early Wrath and Khross' guild vs mine, it wasn't having all the raid buffs that made the difference. It was the speed of the kill. DPS literally means damage per second, which everyone knows, but that "per second" thing is trickier than it sounds. Khrossguild of old engages Patchwerk and kills him in 2 minutes, netting a Bloodlust uptime of 33%. My guild of old engages Patchwerk and kills him in 3 minutes, netting a Bloodlust uptime of 22%. The very same Mage, for example, placed in both of the Patchwerk kills, performing the very same rotation with the very same raid buffs etc etc, will have a different DPS number at the end of the day just because of the raid he is in.

That's why you have be wary when you start thinking about hitting X DPS number you read about. If you're in my guild and the person you were reading from was in Khross', you will wrongfully feel like you're doing something wrong.

Even that example is very overly simplified, given that there is much more than just Bloodlust involved in real raids, though Bloodlust is probably the single biggest individual factor.

I see "Patchwerk" referenced a lot in various WoW threads usually as some sort of benchmark. What is the significance of this fight?

Patchwerk is a straight Tank and Spank. There's no movement involved, and is a DPS race to the end.

He was used as a meter for a guild's DPS under perfect conditions.

He's incredible vanilla tank and spank. There's no movement involved, no AE fears, no phases, just straight raid boss target dummy basically.

iron8ically, because of this, I find him to be a not so useful measure of DPS. Sure you could pull 9k+ on him but what use is that,0 really for measuring usefull dps?
