I think there's also the "protect the children" idea, where if Lenas wants to post pictures of himself for wierdo's in basements to beat off too, he can, and he's a consenting adult.

But a mother posting pictures of her child that someone might use to beat off crosses another line- and in fact, if said pictures end up being used or distributed as child pornography, the mother could then be charged with distribution of child pornography as well.

TL;DR- when you're of age, you can decide if you want potentially pornographic pictures of yourself out there or not. Before that point, we avoid letting such pictures out even with parental discretion.

Someone needs to arrest my mum then... There's a naked photo of me and a male baby (family friend) sitting in a tub that she gave away as part of her Christmas cards one year...

While I suspect they have mostly being hunted down and :quote: destroyed :quote: ... There may still be copies :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck:

There's a difference between giving them out to friends and family and posting publicly online.

Was talking more to those statements you made. There's really no stop checks placed on the giving of those photos or how to destroy them, and there's certainly no rules attached. Further more I was not given the chance to concent to the distribution of the potentially pornographic picture. So there is certainly potention for those pictures to be used or distributed as child pornography, would my mother than be charged with distribution?

While I agree that

The difference is not as big as you think they may be, the only difference is now it's public knowledge your mum's giving away your naked baby pictures, as opposed to the silent acknowledgement and teenage embarrasment previously experienced in 'private'...

I'll take: "Things I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About" for 500 Alex.

The bigger difference is to how it's been prosecuted in the past, and the precedents set. I don't feel like looking up the cases, but I've run across them in the past.

Distributing pictures of your children to friends and family who would have some reason beyond the fact that they're naked is considered different than putting them out into the "public space" where they can be more easily further distributed and misused.

And then there's also the key that the pictures of you would have had to be found or used in a pornographic manner.

A lot of people don't see Facebook as "public space" so much as they see it now as an extension of their private lives.

This I can totally see. FB has made the one time 15 minutes of fame into every freaking half hour of fame. I post cute stuff once in awhile about me, foamy, or the kids, but I know people, who post every gd thing that goes on in their life from sun up to sun down and even when they wake up in the middle of the night. I usually block these people. I think these people are looking for validation about something. I don't know, Especially those stupid cryptic posts to get people to ask you what's wrong or what's up. There should be on FB the little emoticons like we have here so I can :suicide: every time I see those posts on my news feed

Edit: dammit, it's not nearly as fun when the emoticon doesn't work inside the quote. There, fixed.

The issue here is not Facebook or their policies, it is that anything and everything involving nudity is automatically classified as pornographic in the United States. We think of breastfeeding as porn, because it involves a bare titty. We can no longer separate the practical function of the female breast from the core artistic theme of Jolly **** 12. This attitude bleeds over to pictures of children, and you get people labeling a shirtless kindergartener as child porn.

Five year-old girls play with baby dolls all the time, pretending to feed them from a bottle. I know that my two nieces had to have explained to them on several occasions that their little brother was a real person and not a doll. A five year old pretending to breastfeed a two year old sibling or cousin is not a great stretch.

There's concern that some sick weirdo would find the picture and jerk to it. Why do we have that concern? What does it say about us that our first thought is child porn, rather than a five year-old pretending to be a mommy? How sick and twisted are we as a society that we have sexualized that image, without even seeing it? How does a normal person look at a picture of a five year-old playing mommy, and think it's child pornography? I'm reminded of how Sharia Law came about in Islam. It wasn't to control women. Rather, men were such dogs that they would rape a woman unless she was covered. Considering that, I'm not entirely comfortable with the obsession my fellow countrymen have with child porn and pedophilia.

And that's a problem. Especially when so, so many people don't have almost any privacy protection on their pages.

What it says about us is that we're concerned with people not sexually exploiting children. You may be familiar with a certain recent incident at Penn State. Sexual exploitation of children is a real issue, and while we may have some hangups regarding breastfeeding, that does not somehow put us in the same category as people covering women in burkhas. This is what we call false dilemma thinking, and it's not a matter of us "becoming sick" as a society; it's that while our society has a hangup about boobies, you (and quite a few other people as well) have a hangup with society having standards of decency you don't personally approve of.

This isn't a matter of legality or illegality either; it's a matter of a private organization conforming to our social mores. Furthermore, while our social mores regarding breastfeeding are rather silly, the other side of the coin is rather silly as well. Breastfeeding is a bodily function and while it does not present the health risks of many other bodily functions, it's still personal business just like taking a crap is personal business. Should it be legal? Probably, even though taking a crap in public shouldn't for the simple reason that we should not have poop all over the place. However, the fact that it should be legal to breastfeed in public does not somehow imply that everyone else should necessarily express personal approval of, or even disinterest in, what you are doing. If you want to breastfeed in public you are choosing to make your personal business everyone else's business as well, just as if you discuss your personal finances out where everyone else can hear you, and if other people want to express disapproval that does not automatically make them sick or depraved or even uptight and backwards.

This is especially true in view of the big deal that breast feeding advocates make out of breastfeeding in public. If you're going to do it, just do it. You don't need to be screeching about how natural and normal it is; those of us that think it is natural and normal do not need you to remind us how cool it is that you can whip out your tit in public, and those that do not think so are not going to have their minds changed by childish "nyah nyah nyah here's my boobies and you can't do anything about it" attention-getting behavior.

It's even more interesting that the same people who are all about breastfeeding publicly and think everyone else should approve of what they are doing are in a large part the same crowd that think it's their personal duty to tell moms who are bottle feeding that they're somehow doing something wrong. If you want people to leave you alone to breastfeed your kid in public, then just shut the **** up and take care of business.
