I can't stand my job. I hate staring at code. It's the most boring thing ever. I would rather stare at Microsoft Paint and swirl colors around for 8 hours a day. I wish I could break my spine so I could swirl colors around 8 hours a day. Maybe it is worthwhile to live in a mental hospital and get obese and mess around forever. Maybe disability is the way out.

I don't know what to do. I'm stuck here. I can't quit because I need the money. I'm just a huge whiner. All I do is sit and stare at my code and it's so complicated that I don't know what to change. They aren't pressuring me a lot either because they know it's difficult. But I can't do it. And then I go on the Internet and feel like a bad person because I'm doing something other than work, and I should just be sitting here staring at code. No Facebook, no Glade, no websites on girl advice. Just boring, dull, code about allocating ip addresses. There's no documentation. Only a huge mess to be stared at. I daydream and think about possible adventures later on tonight, that will involve infrequent conversations with strangers who will mildly like me or otherwise tolerate me. My mom will probably read this too. Whatever.

I was going to say, "Welcome to the working world," but Elvis Costello popped into my head:
Quote:
Welcome to the workin' week.
Oh I know it don't thrill you, I hope it don't kill you.
Welcome to the workin' week.
You gotta do it till you're through it so you better get to it.

You know, we all do this (grow up and work), and have to come to terms with it, at some point. Or end up obese and disabled, I guess, institutionalized or not.

Heck, I'm pushing middle-age and still haven't figured out quote how to come to terms with it. Given how much time I spent here during the day, yeah, I think you could say I'm not thrilled with my job. But, it pays the bills, allows me to live a fairly comfortable life. Could be worse, if I stop and think of it intellectually for a moment. If I think of it emotionally, yeah, it sucks, and I start to wallow. But, perhaps that's why we have brains.

Sorry, I'm rambling that probably doesn't help much other than to realize that you're not alone.

Hi, Mom! :)

Yeah, its not so thrilling calling the same people every day to check on the status of a ticket as to why nothing was done regarding new information entered, nobody got back to the client, nobody checked the server that someone four days ago asked someone to check...

This is why people pay us to do it.

You're going to find Imperi, that you usually have 2 options when speaking of work.

Interesting fun work that pays for ****
Annoying boring work that pays fairly well

Take your pick.

You got that ticket, too? :)

And, yeah, Aizle nailed it, I think.

The older I get, the less purpose I find.

Oh the IT thing... <small rant> 2 month, and all I needed was an adobe writer. Still nothing, nada >.<

Recent versions of Office can write .pdfs. Adobe's .pdf product, on the other hand, costs a bunch of money. If you needed that, specifically, then it's probably not IT's problem that's holding it up 2 months... it's a budget issue at this point, because IT doesn't have spare licenses sitting around.

No it's an IT issue. I got a new computer (cause the old was dying) they needed to image my old puter onto the new one. They forgot to move the writer across >.<

Of course then being the incompetent people they are, they thought "Hey, she doesnt need this, we'll give it to someone else!" (this was one of the programs I specifically told them I needed) So they have to now charge the other dude that got my writer, and give me a new one.

Not to mention considering part of my job is legal based I need to keep all my email records for 7 years (told them this also). They lost 2 weeks of my emails in the middle of nowhere, no idea how they did it, but they did. That is after they forgot to transfer my email across and gave me the "Oh, ops, good thing we havent reformatted your computer yet! hehehe" /facepalm

Btw they are prob key logging this too so... *shakes fist in general direction of IT*

You're stuck looking at a chunk of code. I'm stuck looking at the same CMS model, for the same niche clients, with the same niche style designs.

Gets old, pays bills.

If it was fun they'd charge you admission instead of paying you to be there.

I can relate too.

Rori -- does that tool create editable pdfs? That's the most common need that predicates buying Adobe's full pdf package.

Yeah I dont need a program to turn stuff into pdfs. I need to be able to write/delete things from pdf. Since I write up labels for medicines, this is kinda important for me.

Lex (sorry, gotta get used to the new name still) Imperi- We all have those days where the last place we want to be is at work. Occasional ennui is normal. Talk to your therapist/counselor/psychiatrist if this is something new from before your diagnosis and continues...you may just need an adjustment to your meds.

Or maybe just a vacation...

Lydiaa, It's a shame I can't demo out Custom RX for you great package from one of my clients, it does custom labels for meds with full ndc#, lot#, expiration, dosage, warnings, and patient name. It also has inventory tracking and ordering.

Or interesting work that pays well and has terrifying levels of responsibility and the awareness you could lose the entire deal at any moment.

Just saying. It doesnt have to be dull, and paid or interesting and poor. Its just interesting and paid tends to be, a) hard, and b) heavily meritocratic. Meaning, you didn't cut it, seeya.

its interesting when you get to program your own code. Boring as hell when its another's. at least thats what I found and why I don't do it.

Perhaps some languages. Learn something like PHP or Ruby and you can have a 75k+ job with less effort than it takes to spit.

It's not too bad if you've got a decently rouunded skill-set or a few years of experience. If you're the generic "I just graduated from college and I know java" guy, then yeah, it's gonna be hard to get a job writing code.

Getting into gov't work so you can get a security clearance makes you pretty marketable, too, if you can manage it.

It's hard when there's tons of company-specific things you need to learn.

So?

You are bright Lex, make it a game and make it go faster. I'm kidding, but in your terms

- Every new company specific bit you learn is one more step toward promotion.
- Every promotion means more money.
- More money means you have more means to impress the mindless wenches
- The more mindless wenches you impress, date, and sleep with, the more Imperi Points you get.
- At the end of the game you can cash in your Imperi Points for Honorable, Revered, Exalted, or Worshipped Status with the local 4F society, and a good dose of penicillin.

I am happy with the amount of money I make. I only want to make enough to be independent from my parents. Money does not help with girls. Having a job actually hinders chasing girls because you waste all your day working. I won't necessarily become super promiscuous like many people on the Glade. Chances are high that I will just get a cute, smart girlfriend and find a new hobby, like art.
