We've had a few in the past, but now that the Release to Manufacture of Windows 8 is out, I think it's safe to make the thread.

Anyone besides me trying the RTM yet? I've used each iteration of W8 since they first made it available, and I have to say it's pretty impressive. The MS Store works great and I'm really impressed/satisfied with [the formerly-named] Metro apps. Even though it's not launching until October 26, there are some great applications in the Store atm. Engadget, Newegg, Wikipedia, Kindle are gorgeous and I can't wait for more companies to publish their own.

I know that many people feel a disconnect between the Tile world and the Desktop world, but I feel like after the Store gets a chance to grow, the Desktop is going to be left behind quickly. Metro apps are just gorgeous and work very quickly, and if companies put some good designers in charge of transitioning, we're gonna see some GREAT stuff. I wanna add some screenshots but my MBP keyboard doesn't have a print screen key and that's kinda screwing me up :P

Not using it yet, but I hear that it should be released to software assurance customers this Friday, so I should have it to play with then. Your comment is the first positive thing I've heard, now I might actually load it on something.

I've been an advocate since they first showed the design but this final version is much more polished than the beta or previews were. I'm liking it a lot.

IMO the overall success of the Windows 8 design (like iOS/OSX App Store and Android) is going to depend on developer support of the Tile application style. The barrier to entry is very low, so I'm hoping it wont be much of an issue.

I've only spent a brief time with it so far, but I like what I've seen. My concerns with any new operating system are mostly related to backwards compatibility. I have a small fortune invested in software for recording music, and various other utility type things that I rely on heavily. I'd be mighty annoyed if they don't work. This was a huge issue with Vista and early Win 7. This was probably more to do with the proliferation of 64 bit applications and the lack of software/driver support for them.

I hope it's not an issue with Windows 8.

My only complaint is the missing Start Menu in the desktop mode.

I know it's silly, but I feel so lost without it.

Sorry to have made you feel dirty, but honestly - that makes all the difference in the world to me. Thanks!

Alternatively, Shel, from either the new Start screen or the Desktop view, you can hit Win-Q to bring up the full app list.

Win-Q from anywhere, App search
Win-W from anywhere, Setting search
Win-F from anywhere, File search

90% of my Start button usage in Windows 7 is accessing the "Search Programs and Files" dialog box, which is how I launch almost everything.

Hitting any button from the start screen will automatically start searching, just like typing in the old taskbar, so the method for using it is still the same... Tap Windows key, start typing.

Yup.. I guess that's what I'm saying. I won't really miss the Start button in Win 8, since they added search to the new UI.

If they keep going in the direction I saw from one of the preview builds, I will be avoiding Win8 like the plague.

I'm on a PC without a touch screen. I don't need or WANT a touch screen interface. Of course, take this with a grain or three of salt as I'm someone who's downloaded programs to get the Win7 start bar back to its XP version.

So ... would this work on my 10-year old HP tablets (touch-screen)?!

And, yes, I realize the absurdity of that question.

If it meets these requirements:

    1 GHz or faster processor
    1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Metro apps have an added requirement of minimum 1024x768 resolution.

For Touchscreen Users

Although there are a number of existing Windows 7 touch devices and many are fully supported, we do recognize the touch experience of Windows 8 places a greater demand on a high quality experience than could have been foreseen when manufacturers were developing hardware for Windows 7. Our data is showing that a vast majority of Windows 7 touchscreens will perform well for Windows 8. This means that touch drivers continue to load, and you’ll be able to perform basic touch interactions with a reasonable degree of success. The following systems are a few that we have been using widely in our internal testing and self-hosting, although of course, this is not a specific endorsement of these PCs:

HP Elitebook 2760p convertible (Note: This PC is 1280x800 and so does not support snap.)
ASUS EP121 tablet (Note: his PC is 1280x800 and so does not support snap.)
Dell Inspiron Duo convertible
Lenovo x220t convertible
3M M2256PW 22” display (Note: The raised bezel can make it harder to swipe along the edges)
Samsung Series 7 slate (Note: This PC has two models, one was provided to attendees at //build/ and the other is a commercial release; the latter has slightly different peripherals and firmware.)

I'm kinda here with this. Except for the start bar hate.

Huh. I was fine up until the WDDM part, as far as I can tell. I'll get modern some day.

Seems Microsoft licensed Apple's design patents back in 2010; we wont need to worry about Surface bans: http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/13/micr ... n-patents/

Good, that'll rip the legs out from under any trade-dress arguments with Samsung. How can you be a distinctive Apple design when Apple permits Microsoft to use "rectangle with rounded corners" in their devices, too?

Why Apple Won’t Sue Microsoft Over Surface

The latest revelation from the never-ending Apple vs. Samsung patent spat: Apple offered to license the contentious patents to Samsung and they declined, but Microsoft was offered the same deal—and took it.

There are, however, a few caveats to the cross-licensing deal between Apple and Microsoft. First, there's an agreement between the two companies that neither will make what is described as a "clone product." The deal apparently lays out some specific rules dictating exactly what a "clone product" is. Second, there are some things that Apple isn't willing to share, described by Apple's director of patent licensing and strategy Boris Teksler as "untouchables." What they are exactly is anyone's guess, but it seems likely the were UI related.

Presumably, because of the cross-licensing deal between Apple and Microsoft, the Surface should be able to launch without running into the same kind of problems Samsung is up against, especially since the Windows 8 interface is so radically different from iOS. Of course, if Samsung manages to win, they didn't need that offered deal anyway.

Because Microsoft understands how the patent system works and is paying Apple to license the design, where Samsung isn't. Let's not turn this into a debate about the patent system, though. We all know it's shitty, but MS is playing by the current rules.

I didn't say anything about patents. I said something about trade dress, which Apple has also been flinging at Samsung, and is equally as offensive.

You didn't mention the word patent but this is still an issue centered around them. Microsoft is licensing Apple's patent on the design.

That looks like complete and utter ****. I've had a PC since I was 10 years old and since I first got Windows 3.1 I have strived to keep my desktop icon and clutter-free. This design is a direct slap in the face to that mentality :psyduck: :suicide:
