Closed/good listening... That's what I want. Now I'm confused on what is what now....
GradoPrestige Series SR80i, looking at these for $99.00
They want $299 for Bose...yikes!
The grados, while excellent for acoustic stuff and pretty music in general, are not closed at all. They leak like crazy. If you're not just ear blaringly loud, you'll be able to hear everything around you, and if you are ear blaringly loud, everyone else will be listening right along with you.
I've actually been thinking about getting a portable pair to go with my Q701's (spoke earlier about them not really being portable) and this set having the mic and control for cell phones/ipod is just icing on the cake. Think I may pick up a pair for myself.
One more bit of info - these are ranked #7 on head-fi, out of all headphones. Surprising for a sub-200$ pair (the #1 spot is the LCD-2, and those cost 995$ (street price). http://www.head-fi.org/products/category/headphones
I'm interested in getting some headphones. DR, how have you liked the ones that you got? I've been looking at the ones Lenas mentioned and the ones you did also. I just want some comfy headphones to listen to music that cancel outside noise.
Any advice?
For noise cancelling, I so want to get the Bose ones. There's a demo in Best Buy (or there was) that had a set of headphones attached to a display. You put them on, and press a button. You get some cool music playing, and a dude talking about the headphones. Then he asks you to take them off.
When you do, you hear this loud *** white noise that's blasting at you from a speaker by your head. Its pretty awesome IMO
I've also been thinking about getting a new set of headphones. I have some Sennheiser HD280s that I like a lot, but I was thinking about upgrading. Anyone have any idea the kind of difference in quality I can expect between those and something like the HD598 Or any recommendations?
Also, does anyone else get really paranoid when listening to loud music on closed headphones? I always feel like I have to take them off after every song and make sure my house isn't being ransacked downstairs. Makes me wish I had a dog, but maybe some open headphones would help...

Nah, now that I have a toddler I can rely on the fact that whenever I have headphones on, my house is being ransacked.
Amazon deal of the day is the V-moda crossfade LP's (the first edition, there is a newer, the LP2). They're going for 80 bucks. I'm getting a pair, not going to get anything close over-ear and sealed for 80 bucks.
Wow, those look really nice DR- thanks for the heads up.
I'm considering getting a pair- expensive, but the reviews look great.
Hope you picked them up yesterday, they're back up to 139 today. I bought some, I'll let you know how they are once I break them in.
Sadly, I got partway through looking up reviews, and decided not to order them. Mostly because all the reviews consistently panned their performance in acoustical/vocal music, which is most of what I listen to.
That, and I got busy and forgot about it.

Yeah, in that price range, if you don't care about sound isolation at all, the grados SR80i's are pretty excellent for that type of music.
Got my headphones last night, so not broken in yet, but I must say, so far these things rock. I've listened to quite a bit of music, watched some TV, and played some Just Cause 2 (I.e. that game where you blow up EVERYTHING), and so far, nothing has stood out as negative. Also, I find them quite comfortable out of the box. I was surprised just HOW chrome they are (they looked more grey in the photos), here's a pic:

Pretty sharp looking, and built like a tank. I was initially surprised at how much bass they have (I've been listening to a lot of reference headphones/systems, and their bass tends to be on the side of accurate, but minimized.) I think my Q's will be for critical listening, but when I just want to throw something on and rock out, these guys are great stuff.
