Is a major insurance company actually hiring lawyers for the person that killed a policyholder just so they can get out of paying, and then after they lose the court case, just deciding to stiff the victim anyway?

It looks like Progressive is delaying paying the award with appeals, and while not uncommon, this is certainly scummy.

Insurance company executives don't become billionaires by paying out claims fairly now, do they?

Despicable...

If it actually happened.

Apparently it was Nationwide who hired and paid for the defendants lawyers.

Too little information, and as Hopwin's cited article points out, and Progressive claimed, Nationwide's attorney actually handled the case.

A lot of insurance companies will deny especially life insurance claims when they know the lawsuit to get them to pay will cost the plaintiff more than they are likely to get, take years, and in the case of Maryland, they have to go trough a preliminary case to even get the right to sue them.

That said, I do not know the contents of the insurance policy nor the exclusions that may have made the denial valid legally if not morally. There are some tricky ways some companies write things up that make them look like it is a general coverage when it is very limited.

I worked for a short time in the industry 25 years ago. While there are some fine and wonderful people selling insurance, there are also many who are not stellar in their dealings with their customers.

From the last paragraph of the CNN article...
