Why and where have I seen this video before?

I'd be more surprised if you'd somehow managed to avoid it thus far.

Symbion Project - Beyond Orion's Arm

Lyrics:
Spoiler:
Small star
How you've come to grow such stellar arms
So far away
Or just an earthly ghost of yesterday

So, so afraid
Lights can lengthen shadows by the yard
This is hard
To let a halo dim itself and go
Beyond Orion's arm

So far away
Or just too close to what was yesterday?
Hold the matter in
And bars may form across those stellar arms
For just a star

Pulsars
Buckle from the weight of heavy hearts
Words - worlds away
Your halo's sending missives anyway
So, you're so removed
No constellation scatters by a sound
They're still around
For every standard candle has a fit-ful luminary heart

For just a star...
For just a star...
For just a star...

Small star
How you've come to grow such stellar arms
So far away
Or just an earthly ghost of yesterday
So, so afraid
Lights can lengthen shadows by the yard
This is hard
To let a halo dim itself and go
Beyond Orion's arm

I've heard many good songs with good lyrics, but this song in particular stands head and shoulders above most. Many songs tell a fairly detailed story in rhyming form, but this guy does it with such poetic, detailed, analogical description that it makes many others look amateurish.

This song is not only beautifully described, but it has multiple layers. It's about a serial arsonist. But it also describes his view of the world. He constantly describes how icy cold and bleak the night is (thus begging for some warmth) and that the rain itself even hisses and recoils from his wondrous creation.

Obviously, it does not inspire me to commit arson. But I can certainly appreciate the intricate beauty of this song. This man was far ahead of his time in 1991.

Lyrics:
Spoiler:
Stealing down an ally on a cold dark night
I see a halo in the rain around the street light
I stop and look, and listen to the sound
As the raindrops penetrate the silence all around
Alone, I gaze into the glistening street
The distant thunder echoing my heartbeat
Urging me on to a secret goal
Away from the light from this lamp on a pole
So I turn, slip away into the rain
Drifting like a spirit through the shadows in the lane
Clutching the tools of my trade in my hand
An old box of matches and a gasoline can
Darkness envelopes the scene like a shroud
A veil of emptiness hangs from the clouds
Filling up the cracks in this desolate place
Cradled by the night in an icy embrace

Moving through the town like a ghost in the rain
A dim reflection in a dark window pane
Blackness beckons from every side
Creeping all around like an incoming tide
A broken window in an empty house
I slip inside and begin to douse
The whole place with the fuel that will feed the fire
And push back the night, taking me higher
On out of the darkness in a defeaning roar
The match in my hand is the key to the door
A simple turn of the wrist will suffice
To open a passage to paradise
I pause, I think about the past and the gloom
The smell of gasoline permeates the room
Everyone has a little secret he keeps
I light the fires while the city sleeps

(Like the 4th of July)

The match makes a graceful arc to the floor
And time stands still as I turn for the door
Which explodes in a fireball and throws me to the street
I hit the ground running with the flames at my feet
Reaching for the night which recoils from the fire
The raindrops hiss like a devilish choir
Dying in the flames with a terrible sound
Calling all the names of the sleepers all around
But then in the arms of the night, they lay
Their dreams, sprout wings and fly away
Out of the houses in a gathering flock
Swarming overhead as I hurry down the block
I make my escape with the greatest of ease
And savor the darkness, drop to my knees
And the lightless window, my hand on the latch
I reach in my pocket, and pull out a match

If you like this, I'd recommend listening to the rest of the album (if you haven't already). It's pretty killer.

She's been around a while but quickly becoming one of my favorite singers. Haven't heard her do anything I didn't like yet.

I apologize if any of these have been posted before. Not digging thru 26 pages to find out :P
And obviously LTTP on this stuff, but just found it (I'm often under a rock). Weird, visual, but very catchy with a hook. Sorry for the ads, but that's today's YT.

Sure some have seen it but this is sample programming taken to the extreme using Ableton Live (live DJ/sequencing suite designed for DJing by mashing up different roots in real time) using a Novation Launchpad to sequence everything as well as doubling as keyboard during the live improvisation.

This video gives you hints where each of the 39 samples was used.

Not sure why this one is stuck in my head currently. My best guess: I have been debating removing this song from my google music playlists because this is one of the few songs that really, really loves finding my car's resonant frequency and loving it up something fierce.

Basically, every object has a frequency in which it resonates and it will amplify those frequencies back. It's how tuning forks work and how glass can be shattered when singers hit a certain note (frequency). So this song sounds fine when played on any speaker outside my car, but inside it, it amplifies certain portions of the bass and is quite jarring when the song begins. Only ways to deal with it are 1. Line the full interior of the car with sound-deadener material (huge pain) or 2. Get a really, really nice equalizer that can cover very broad range of frequencies and help cancel out the resonance. Doubt I'll bother with either.

And that, class, is why some songs sound like crap when you get a subwoofer in your car.

- Another bit of resonant frequency trivia, Nikola Tesla determined the RF of the Earth (just under 8Hz) but scientists didn't believe him or verify it until after his death.

Heh, Shel. Nice pick. Fun song to play on the guitar and the solo is not difficult to learn at all either.

I remember when the song came out the drummer's hairstyle looked just like Legolas' on the cover of one of my Two Towers paperbacks. I also remember thinking it would be cool to grow out my hair like that.

It (thankfully) never happened.
