If it's legitimate robbery, women's possessions have ways of trying to remain with their rightful owners.

If it's legitimate arson, women's houses have ways of remaining unburned.

If it's a legitimate drunk driving accident, female victims have a way of not dying.

The fact that this guy sits on the House Science Committee is a travesty.

See, the part I don't get is why everyone wants to bring up the House Science Committee. I have to tell you, Akin is not outside the norm for politicians. While compared against the general populace, Congressmen and Senators might be smarter, that doesn't make them smart. I doubt he's unusual among the members of the House Science Committee. Probably every sitting member of the House Science Committee is a travesty. I would go so far as to say that I expect that every sitting member of any House Committee is a travesty. Maybe if there was a House Sophistry Committee, there'd be a full complement of qualified members. But other than something like that, you're out of luck.

I was glad to see that the R's came out rapidly and roundly denounced the idiocy. If only that were the norm when something like this happens on either "team".

On the other hand, to paraphrase what a wise person once said, I wish the National Debt would say something offensive so we could get outraged about that for a few says.

Maybe they should run on issues that actually matter?

Y'know, like the economy and jobs and wars and ****?

Although, its a good thing that he came out as a moron... maybe that'll provide some impetus to get rid of his dumb ***.

Akin spoke poorly and stupidly. Republicans including this one condemn him.

Meanwhile the keynote Speaker of the DNC was accused of rape, leveraged his position to get employees to preform sex acts on him and lied about said acts under oath. Democrats rally around him and create websites telling us how we just need to get a life and focus on the real issues.

Also buried under the outrage was the Democrat having sex with the 17 year old boy.

Let's forget about one man's idiocy in favor of getting mad about unrelated topics!

I'm not saying the dems you guys are talking about don't deserve ridicule or punishment, but let's not move goalposts. This guy is an idiot and should not be in the position he's in, that's what this thread is about.

This thread is about discussing whether he's an idiot, and whether he should be in the position he's in, not assuming that's the case and then congratulating ourselves for agreeing with each other.

He clearly said something very foolish. However, there are certain sources out there that will tell you that there is a reduced risk of pregnancy during rape because the trauma makes it harder for the fertilization and implantation of the embryo to take place. To the best of my knowledge, this is not true; the rate of pregnancy after rape is the same as it is for any other kind of sex. I also don't know if that changes any based on the level of actual violence involved in the rape since many rapes occur purely through threat. It seems likely this guy was told some information along these lines at some point, believed it, and then did a very poor job of paraphrasing it when he conducted this interview.

However, believing inaccurate information about the medical likelihood of pregnancy after a rape is not the same thing as blaming the victim, or excusing the perpetrator, or implying she's a slut, or anything of that sort. It's simply being uninformed about the physiological aspects of rape.

As to the comment about "legitimate rape" it's certainly valid to point out that not every allegation of rape is actually true.

Insofar as moving the goalposts go, it's also hardly reasonable to suggest that comparing the uproar over this to what's occurred in the cases of other political figures is somehow moving the goalposts. Even if this guy IS an idiot and shouldn't be in the position he's in, why is it out of bounds to point out that other, bigger idiots are left in their positions?

The only problem DE is, that sentiment will of course be forgotten and buried months or even years from now when a similar situation occurs but with the political roles reversed.

Speaking of leveraging one's political position for sexual favors, while I don't necessarily think that all heads of state should be sleeping with anything that walks, I think we can all agree that, "I'm President of the United States of America," ranks right up there with, "I walked on the surface of the Moon," and, "I invented the iPhone," for lines that should get you buried beneath a mountain of panties.

I vehemently disagree with what Akin said, but there are a lot of studies for people trying to conceive that it is easier the more unprotected sex you have with your partner because the female body adjusts and stops attacking the foreign sperm cells as bacteria/viruses. I'd link to the studies but frankly I don't want it in my search history.

Again disagree with Akin and his bullshit and doubt he had those studies in mind when he spouted his stupid.

I don't think he had any studies in mind at all. I think he had most likely simply been told at some point that trauma can make pregnancy less likely and run with it.

Yes, inconsistency and hypocrisy will be a continuing problem. I haven't seen any surefire solutions for that.

Wasn't the smartest thing to say. Had never heard of this guy before this. But the MSM is going to do everything it can to stick this on R/R and the GOP/Pubs.

I also watched a portion of a show where they were explaining a study that during an orgasm, the woman's muscles respond in such a way as to pull the sperm towards the fallopian tube with the egg. I found this very interesting.

Regardless, what he said is very problematic. It's not just a matter of him misunderstanding something he was presented. He believes this, and is in a position to make policy.

The real frightening thing is the "legitimate rape" issue. He seems to be leading down the road of "if you got pregnant than it wasn't rape".

This, and the way he positioned his comments leads down the road to not considering date rape as "real" rape. He comes off as a horribly misogynistic bible thumper, who is happy to blame the victim to further his anti-abortion agenda.

I think it's very, very, VERY rare for women to orgasm during rape, unless they mean the woman's muscles respond that way during the man's orgasm.

He's not in a position to make policy by himself. He's only one Senator, and just because he holds some erroneous beliefs doesn't make it a huge problem. Everyone holds some erroneous belief or other.

I also don't see that the "legitimate rape" thing is frightening. All he's doing is differentiating between rapes that are verified and those that are alleged.

It's exceedingly weak to claim someone "positioned their comments" to "lead down a road" to something.

Unfortunately, we only need 51 such erroneous belief holders in the senate and 220 or so in the house to create horrendous policy.

The fewer of these douchebags that are elected, the better.

Yeah, it might be unfair as i haven't seen him explain, but "womens bodies can shut down pregnancy in cases of legitimate rape" does seem to imply "if you got pregnant it (probably) wasn't rape"

Bad phrasing or intended meaning aside, thats ow it reads to me, knowing nothing about the guy or his politics.

TERRIBLE soundbite. Awful idea if he believed that implication too.

I doubt very, very much that you're going to get 51 people in the Senate and 220 in the House that all erroneously believe that rape does not result in pregnancy. Even if they did, holding a mistaken belief about the likelyhood of pregnancy in no way means you blame the victim, are a mysoginist, etc.
