I still don't get why Windows Phone never caught on. I liked Pocket PC going back to 2003 at least but somehow RIM was beating them with their shitty trackball.

I think Windows Phone 8 is gonna start getting a lot of traction when they release it alongside Windows 8. It looks pretty good. I can't wait for companies to announce some new handsets because my upgrade is available in September.

I don't have an upgrade until I think summer next year so I can wait to see if they actually gain traction and app support before I have to consider it.

That's one of the big things with the launches... Windows 8 and WP8 share the same codebase, so anything made for either platform should be easy to port either way. Hopefully the market gets a big boost after they both launch.

Considering the way that W8 seems to be tanking... I'm not hopeful.

I think saying that Windows 8 is tanking two months before release is a bit premature. Especially if you're basing that off of comments by people like Gabe Newell, who are only upset because their business model is now threatened.

You can't buy it until October 26th. The "release" last week was the Release to Manufacturer, which is the final version, but it's intended to give developers a chance to fill the marketplace prior to consumer launch.

Yeah, I have to say, people are condeming it pretty quick. Especially since if you've bought a pc since June you get it for 15 bucks, and if you have any previous version of windows it's 40 bucks. That's pretty damn cheap. If app support happens, it will take off, even if all the tech bloggers hate it.

It looks like the 60 (which appears to be 69) dollar version is actually the packaged version in stores, but the downloadable ISO is 39.

P.S. The new file copy window and task manager are awesome. So many features that always should've been there.

For anybody that's using 7 and still unsure, you can very easily shrink an existing disk partition down and install 8 into the new space. Windows 8 did the install and set up dual-boot automatically. I was sitting at a Win-8 desktop in less than 20 minutes.

This will at least let you try it out before you decide to wipe 7 and go all in.

The old man even says "I'm dragging my mouse around looking for menus that might pop up" which is funny, because in the final version of Windows 8 that would actually do something and this entire video would have been over much faster.

Is this what you mean by Windows 8 tanking? Old people not knowing how to use an early release developer preview?

Windows > type "disk management" > right click drive in question > click "shrink volume." > Make changes like the badass that you are > BAM!

I turned my wife loose on it a few days ago. She hated it - said she couldn't find anything. She took another crack at it last night and admitted she's starting to like it. She's not at all what you would consider a power-user.

It's a different approach to using a computer. The only problem with Windows 8 is it's still too young to have the same breadth of software embracing this approach.

I swear, some people just want a different looking Start button every few years.

Yea, comparing an as yet unreleased operating system to the ones you've been using, and have been refined over several years, is hardly really fair. Especially when there are fairly dramatic differences in fundamental things...

If I want to dual boot 7 & 8, how much space should I allocate to 8? I assume I can access my win7 partition.

More than enough. Mine is 50GB and I have a good amount of apps plus Darksiders II installed through Steam.

This is pretty much what happened to me. I installed the consumer preview a few months ago and barely touched it before going back to my W7 partition. Last night, I booted over and started installing the programs I use every day. As of right now, W8 is pretty much just "W7 with a really funky start menu" to me. I just had to move past the initial "omg, it's so different" shock.

Yes. Your files in Win7 are still accessible. I have no problems accessing items under my Win7 profile, but I will admit that the first time took a while. I don't know if it was building an index on the fly or what. But it took a minute or so.
