I can't help but think Neil would appreciate the humor.

I don't usually get much affected by the passing of famous folks, but I have been surprised at how relatively emotional I have been over this.

A lot of amazing people went into the moon landing, and I won't even say Neil Armstrong was on a level above all the rest, but he was deservedly an icon for it. Losing that icon feels like a loss for all of humanity. Carl Sagan said something to the effect that the moon landing put us all squarely in the realm of myth and fantasy, that humanity was taking something so unreal and making it actually happen. I am inclined to agree at the wonder of it all.

Now I feel like a part of that is distant history, where it was just previously more or less current. Humanity will move on and still do great things beyond Earth, but this death more than any has moved us into an era where we will simply be without those who were part of the beginning of it all. In that we are diminished.

I feel kinda weird since I just mentioned him in the Phyllis Diller thread, but I know there is nothing to it. I agree with what was said about history moving farther away especially with the current issues with manned space.

The current issues with manned space are very simple.

We don't think China is trying to land on Mars. If we did, we'd have boots on the surface now instead of a fresh rover. Neil Armstrong was a brave man and a true pioneer willing to put his life on the line to further mankind's understanding of the universe. Without belittling that, there are others today who would do the same; we simply lack the national will to further that understanding.

In the '60s, we wanted it enough to risk lives. Today, we no longer do.

Very well said Kaffis.
