Who is she and why have I never heard of her before?

I saw some headlines about her becoming a 'star' at the RNC, so I checked out her Wiki page (for general info), and found this gem...

Mia Love Wiki Page wrote:
Political positions

* Love favors "fiscal discipline, limited government, and personal responsibility."[19] She has also said that she asks herself three questions whenever she approaches an issue, "Is it affordable? Is it sustainable? Is it my job?"[20]

* At her college orientation, Love’s father told her: "Mia, your mother and I never took a handout. You will not be a burden to society. You will give back," a philosophy she underscores on the trail and uses to sum up her conservative views.[21]

* Love is pro-life and has been endorsed by the Susan B. Anthony List.[22] She supports domestic energy exploration, local control of education, Second Amendment rights, and state control of public lands.[23]

* Love’s race has been the subject of much attention, as she is the first black woman mayor in Utah history.[24] She has said that if elected to Congress, she would “join the Congressional Black Caucus and try to take that thing apart from the inside out” and has described the Caucus as “...demagoguery. They sit there and ignite emotions and ignite racism when there isn’t. They use their positions to instill fear. Hope and change is turned into fear and blame. Fear that everybody is going to lose everything and blaming Congress for everything instead of taking responsibility."[25]

I'll take some of that.

So, not having heard of her, I went to see what the fringe liberals thought of her. Some highlights include: she's a self-hating racist, GOP only likes her so that they can pretend they aren't racist, society is responsible for setting up an environment where her parents could move to upper middle class and thus she's a hypocrite, and she's a standard right-wing woman that thinks women should be subservient to men.

Sounds about right.

And yet, we get told on a daily basis that the right is the party of the racist, of hate, of intolerance...ah the tolerance of the progressives and the liberals.

Funny thing I read this morning. Every time a minority gave a speech at the convention last night, MSNBC would go to commercial or talk over whoever it was speaking. Got to keep with that narrative.

These two points have merit, in my opinion, though I'd make the following changes:

1. GOP only likes her in part so that they can pretend bolster their argument they aren't racist

2. society is responsible for setting up an environment where her parents could move to upper middle class and thus she's a hypocrite somewhat oblivious and overly self-congratulatory

Wow. Just a reminder of why I think Libs are really messed up in the head.

I think both points have merit, and I think you're dismissing them out of hand because you don't like them.

But that's just me. I think it's very telling that you jump to "messed up in the head".

So you brush anyone who isn't you a racist?

I thought Society repressed minorities, not fast-tracked them to the upper middle class?

I don't dismiss them. I think the changes he made and the reasoning in his head are very messed up. But that's just me.

That's really dumb, RD. I think you need to consider your statements a little better. I have a lot of respect for your opinions, but this is pretty bad.

I think he considered them exactly the he wanted to. It's very close to his expressed opinions about race being a factor in the Zimmerman/Martin case.

I think it's very probable that the GoP "powers that be" like her in part because of her race, and that it lets them bolster a non-racist image.

That doesn't mean it's the only reason they like her, but in this political climate I think it would be foolhardy to think that it wasn't a factor.

As to the second statement, I think it's important to realize both what societal benefits and personal benefits you had to getting to where you are. I think the original statement went over the top, but I hear far too many peers who want to completely discount the cumulative benefits they've gotten from society in favor of the view that they've done it "all on their own". I might have corrected the statement a bit farther, but I don't think it's hugely out of line.

I'm not sure what's so outrageous about my statements (as opposed the original quotes). The first is just political reality. Does anyone here really think the GOP didn't consider the optics of featuring minority speakers at its convention, particularly when competing against a black opponent with a huge lead among minority voters? As for the second, Love's comments about her personal/family backstory emphasize her and her parents' individual efforts and success, which is all well and good, but such themes can be overdone (e.g. comments like "never took a handout"), particularly when deployed as a criticism of others. It suggests a lack of humility and perspective to me. Is that really so strange?

Define GOP RD. Pretty sure Nitefox considers himself GOP and you just called him a racist.

Yeah, I was trying to use a light touch with the edits to highlight the particular parts where I thought the original statements really went off the rails.

As an aside, you don't need to be racist in order to want to bolster your arguments that you aren't racist.

And since there's a widely prevailing view that the GoP is racist, it seems reasonable that they would want to bolster arguments that they aren't....

So I can't see how someone would take the above comment and get "you think I'm racist" out of it. Unless they're using "special logic".

It doesn't matter. I disagree with Obama so I'm automatically a racist. Ask anyone on the left.

And that has what bearing to the discussion in question?
