I'm doing a sleep study tonight. Anyone done one of these? What can I expect? Is it worth the time and money?

Dunno, but I've always wanted to do one, for some reason. I'll be curious to hear what it's like.

I've done two of them. They strapped a bunch of wires to my head and chest, put me in a strange bed, then told me to sleep flat on my back (???).

To no ones surprise, they told me I didn't sleep well, and that I needed an expensive, loud, uncomfortable contraption (CPAP) strapped to my head and that would help me sleep better.

Guess what? I did breathe a little better, but I still slept like crap. The only nights I got any sleep at all were the ones where I woke up with the mask on the other side of the room.

Needless to say, it wasn't worth the time or money *for me*. YMMV.

I eventually discovered that I have a fairly persistent post nasal drip. An occasional Xyrtec (daytime), or Benadryl (nighttime) helped quite a bit.

You're experience may differ (for better or worse).

My wife has had a couple. She ended up with a CPAP and sleeps well with it. Looks like a squid trying to mate with her face.

I guess, depending on what it's for....
My mom had one done a while back, and they put her on a CPAP machine. Later they realized her condition didn't really suggest she needed to be on one, so she quit. Her problems stem from post op scarring due to thyroid cancer. I've had another relative that has used a CPAP machine for years, and it has helped him. His problem was weight related.

I'm quite sure, I've been zero help. Sorry.

Amazing that no one has created a better design that doesn't make you look like Cthulu.

Oh, wow. It just occurred to me that this is a study you're paying for ... When I replied, I thought you were going to do a sleep study in which they pay you - like a research study or something.

OK, no, I've not always wanted to do one of what you're having done. Is because of snoring or whatever?

My doctor sent me to one after I complained about insomnia. They put me in a room that was easily 85 degrees, on an uncomfortable bed, strapped wires to my head/chest, then told me to lie flat on my back (I sleep on my side mostly, sleeping on my back makes me snore).

Of course, I never fell asleep. About 4am they came in and said "looks like you're not going to sleep, you can leave now".

It was a complete waste of time for me, but hey, maybe it'll work out for you :)

Least I didn't have to pay (military hospital).

I did two of these. They will only be worthwhile if they can definitively pin down a case of apnea. I was assess as a potential narcoleptic but narcolepsy is rare and fairly easy to diagnose because there has never been a documented case of a narcoleptic who didn't suffer from cataplexy.

Anyway, what they may diagnose is that you your brain does not receive enough slow delta wave sleep and quickly enters normal activity. This is typically when dreaming occurs. The problem with this is it's a symptom and any number of somnia conditions may cause as well as a range of other pathological conditions, particularly neurological conditions. It can also be caused by circadian irregularity which itself is a symptom of many things some of which have pathological definitions and some of which don't. I was diagnosed with "non-pathological hypersomnia" but I still maintain it's related to my poor quality of sleep.

So to answer your question is there is a possibility that you may have a specific condition that is readily identifiable they can readily treat, you may have a specific pathological condition that they will have to pin down through process of elimination (very frustrating) or it may be certain combination of lifestyle factors (non-pathological, also frustrating) and sometimes a little of B and C, which I'm sure you can deduce, is frustrating.

The exam itself is very tedious if you don't feel comfortable sleeping being monitoring and with tons of things on your head, face, nose etc. and can make the entire exercise fruitless. A tech sent me home prematurely before my test because she must have fancied herself a doctor and made the decision the latter daytime sleeping test was not required. I had to repeat the entire ordeal. That was frustrating.

So, to sum up the entire science of sleep medicine: frustrating.

I have had one, and I have a CPAP, my experience was similar to Midgen's. I also discontinued use and they tell me I will die without it. So far, still breathing.

My mom had one and ended up with a CPAP. It seems to help her and she's quite pleased with it.

I got to the sleep study place at 9:30. It was a Hilton Homewood Suites, which is probably a lot better than a military hospital. After I did some paperwork and got wired up, I think I went to bed around 11pm. I was able to sleep on my side or back according to my preference, as long as I didn't sleep on my stomach. Bed was comfy, though the room was a bit chilly at 65 degrees on the thermostat. The blankets were nice and warm though.

At around 1am, the technician woke me up and said that about 30 seconds after I fall asleep, I stop breathing. So he hooked me up to a CPAP. This kind was one that only covered your nose. It took a little getting used to, since every time I opened my mouth, air would spew out involuntarily. I recall noticing the tech adjusting my mask once while I was sleeping, and he woke me up at 5 minutes before 6, though I had spontaneously awaken a couple of minutes before. Once I got dressed and filled out another questionnaire, I was able to go home.

The tech used some abrasive cream that felt like he was sandpapering my scalp. And then he had some other white gunk that he used to paste the sensors to my head, which took 3 shampooings to get out of my hair this morning.

I won't get the official results until later, but I'm guessing they'll recommend I use one of these breathing machines.

They usually do.

If it was like mine, they will send you to someone to get one fitted... It's been a couple of years. Hopefully the technology has improved...

Bleah, sorry I missed replying to this, but it looks like a lot of stuff I'd've talked about has already been covered. Just a couple of things I'd ad: there's like 3 different types of mask, full face (covers mouth and nose), nasal mask (covers the nose), and nasal pillows (just covers the nostrils). Most likely they will try to start you on the nasal mask, but I've found the nasal pillows to be way more comfortable and less in the way. I wound up on the pillows because the mask was putting too much pressure on my forehead.

Don't expect this to be an insomnia cure. You'll still have times when you just can't sleep. I didn't need a whole lot of adjustment to my CPAP, but my sleep quality did dramatically improve. Of course, YMMV, so all you can do is try it.
