You're misinterpreting Farsky's statement. In his experience, a very small percentage of women take the pill ONLY for contraceptive purposes. This is actually backed up by the study, as over half (58%) of users take the pill for that as well as for non-contraceptive purposes.

You've made me rethink what I thought FarSky was stating. I'll admit that when I read FarSky's statement:
FarSky wrote:
Of all the girls I've known who take birth control, only a very, very small percentage take it for teh sexxorz. Generally, condoms suffice for that. They take it for its myriad other uses as hormone regulation in order to do things like, say, function as a normal human being without being confined to a bed writhing in agony for three or more days, missing school and work because the pain is so great.

I read it as "Of all the girls I've known, who take birth control, only a very, very small percentage take it for birth control. They use condoms for that. They take it to relieve other symptoms."

The study he posted stated: "About 14% of pill users — or 1.5 million women — rely on the medication exclusively for non-contraceptive purposes.", and that seems to contradict what I thought he stated.

However, if FarSky really meant that, the girls he's known use the pill for other purposes as well (and don't want to come across as oversexed, they're shy, or whatever so they de-emphasize the BC aspect) then I can see the truth in his statement, but the study he posted still shows that a majority use it for both BC and other purposes leaving ~42%, which is not a very, very small percentage.

Well it's a good thing that most people in the world aren't out on the water a lot, because we certainly would get tons more drownings.

In order to have a productive discourse on the subject of birth control, everyone has to understand and accept two basic ideas.

1) A lot of women's health issues are tied directly to their reproductive system. That menstrual cycle is happening regardless of whether a woman is having sex, or intends to have children. Pure-hearted maidens and fire-breathing whores alike all have to deal with the same menstrual cycle and associated health concerns. If a woman doesn't have a menstrual cycle, that's its own health issue.

2) Adults have sex. It's just something we do. We need to stop thinking of sex as something private and intimate that we do with our favorite partner for a moment, and recognize that other people around us have that going on as well.

Most people understand this fairly well, even on an intuitive level. A failure to understand this is not really the issue.

It's not about the control as much as whom should have to pay for it. I'm not opposed to the existence of non-abortive methods, but why should those against their use be forced to pay for them (directly or indirectly)
