Oh, bah. I was thinking they were East. Nevermind. It doesn't deflate my ability to lord it over all the plethora of Browns, Bengals, and Steelers fans that comprise Ohio, though.

Funny you should mention this. The Seattle City Council appoved a privately funded NBA/NHL arena deal tonight (it will be official tomorrow). The city still owns the rights to the name, and the history of the Sonics, so as soon as the investors can find teams to buy (hello Sacramento Kings!), we should have the Sonics and the NBA back in Seattle.

I'm not much of an NBA fan, but I was pretty miffed about the way Clay Bennett stole the team (with collusion from Howard Shultz--Mr. Starbucks). I'm glad they are coming back!

You don't hate on and call traitors somebody who gets traded, or whose free agency sees him ending up at another team, do you?

Exactly. The traitors Ravens aren't our team anymore, but they should be. Moving a franchise is not the same as trading players around. When you move a player, the fans still ahve a team. In point of fact, that was one reason I found the furor over LeBron James going to the heat so asinine; you would think the rest of the Cavaliers didn't even exist.

Quote:
Sure, get pissed at whats-his-face who owned the team. Or, rather, get pissed at your constituency for not improving his stadium (which you had every right not to do -- the deal was it was privately operated, right?), and then turned around and built a new stadium on the public dime after he left anyways. But don't hate the new franchise that happens to have a lot of former-Browns. That's just silly.

Hardly. What's silly is the idea that moving an entire team is the same as trading a player. When you do that, the city in question no longer has a team at all. It's only by a total miracle that there's a new Browns in Cleveland at all, and that team still sucks because its essentially still an expansion club.

Quote:
And you don't have to lecture me about not just liking your team when they're good. I'm a Redskins fan, for God's sake. Though, I have to note with glee that the NFC East came out swinging for the fences. The only reason their division suffered a loss is because the Giants and the Cowboys opened against each other... It's gonna be a tough schedule this year if that's anything to go on. Meanwhile... guess which division saw none of its teams rack a win this week? Oh, yes, tomorrow's going to see some good-natured ribbing of all the AFC North fans around here...

Well, then you shouldn't make comments like "it's not like you lost anything that fabulous." No one said we did.

Proud to have him in my state and as a Viking. And I'm not even a football fan.

The investor who funded the arena is actively pursuing both NBA and NHL franchises. The Coyotes were being discussed at one point, but I'm not sure what their current status is.

It's not by miracle -- it's by contract. Modell wanted to move before his operating contract was up, and so he was sued by the city when he did. As part of the settlement, the city retained the name and franchise, and was guaranteed by the NFL (who were cooperating on behalf of Modell since he's, you know, one of the franchise owners) a future team in the next expansion, all in exchange for releasing Modell from his contract early.

As for the team still sucking because it's essentially still an expansion club... that's patently ludicrous. Other expansion franchises have become successful in similar amounts of time. The Panthers made a Superbowl appearance in their ninth season, and the Texans made the playoffs after nine seasons, too. The Browns are on thirteen, now, so it's time to find an excuse that can hold some water. ;)

Exactly. The Browns are thirteen years old and still playing like an expansion club. Cleveland is a poor city, and it's cursed. Sports teams there never quite make it to the top. The Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers have all made it fairly close to the championship for their sport at one time or another, but the last time any of them actually won anything was 1964, before there even was a Superbowl.

Mismangement has had a great deal to do with the new Browns extremely poor performance, but it would still not have been as bad if the move had not occurred. I'll take "mediocre" over "atrocious" any day.

As for the circumstances of the move, those circumstances are a miracle. How many other teams have had to rename themselves and give the franchise colors and history back to a city they left? Offhand, I can't think of any.

The other teams weren't moving mid-contract.

Again, a complete miracle that Model couldn't wait till the end of the contract.

Just run along with your little Redskins and stop mocking our pain.

I don't get the anger though. The Browns sucked before and they still suck.

Is the pain because the Ravens have been quite good?

The Browns didn't always suck before. They had some pretty good seasons in the late 80s-early 90s.

In any case, no, that has nothing to do with it. Even if the Ravens had never won a game since they were created, we'd still hate them.

Browns fans who despise Art Modell for moving his team out of Ohio remind me of rectal cancer survivors who hate the surgeon who removed the tumor from their *******.

So if the Jets moved somewhere else, it could be likened to breast cancer survivors having their lymph nodes removed from the armpit?

;)

We don't hate Modell for removing himself from Ohio. That was the only positive aspect to the whole affair.

Assuming you believe New York to be America's tits, sure. I'd be far more likely to compare it to the taint, however.

Even more odd is the fact that you celebrate the doctor who, years later, grafted in a synthetic tumor.

Which is fine. New York can still be the taint. America is a very flexible broad.

No, we already covered that. Ohio is the *******. New England, full of **** like it is, is the colon.

**** that, we Clevelanders hate every owner we have that doesn't type in comic sans. **** our closer just gave a national interview and called out the ownership for being cheap bastards. He would be a folk hero but Cleveland hates closers ever since Joe Table **** us out of a world series win.

Randy Lerner was/is so despised that we are viewing a Steelers fan buying the team to be a positive.

Oh yeah before I forget: **** the Ravens and their fans; Steelers fans, so inbred that if Maury Povich came to town there's a 95% chance that any random stranger is the father... Or brother... Or both. Bengals fans, you guys suffer almost as much as Clevelanders, so do the world a favor and go jump in the rivet.

(all tongue in cheek of course :) )

There has been talk of moving the Coyotes back to Canada as of last year. I think they got things settled now and the team will be staying where it is. If they were going to get an NHL team there, I would say try to poach one of the teams in Florida. The Lightning are a semi good to great team and they seem to have solid ownership. The Panthers might not be hard to move though.
